DF Modding / Making sand with a reaction
« on: July 14, 2016, 07:21:21 pm »
So I have a concept for a reaction, but I don't know if it'll work. Ignoring the specific materials used here, would this reaction do what I expect it to do (i.e. take a unit of stone and a unit of powder, and create a unit of sand, which is immediately placed in an empty bag, to be used in glassmaking)?

DF Modding / Converting tree seeds to non-tree seeds?
« on: November 07, 2015, 10:38:09 pm »
Is it possible to create reactions that take seeds from tree fruits (e.g. peach pits) and produce seeds from another specific standard-type plant (e.g. "shrub peach pits")? Because I'm getting sick of all the useless tree fruit seeds clogging up my forts. I'm not averse to making an individual reaction for each variety, but if it could be condensed into one somehow that would be fantastic.

On a related note, are subterranean fruiting trees possible?

DF Modding / How to get a desert civ working?
« on: October 28, 2015, 05:29:32 am »
So I have basically no idea why this entity won't generate a desert/savanna-dwelling civilization. In fact, it won't generate a civilization at all for some reason. Could any of you kind folks look it over and tell me what I'm doing wrong? And yes, the creature is properly set up and the language is properly set up.

DF Modding / Using flowers etc. from trees?
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:55:42 am »
Is it possible to make flowers, leaves etc. usable for things like milling, brewing etc., in the same way that fruits are? Are they simply not collected by default because they don't have any of these uses, or is there some other thing making this happen? If it is possible to have dwarves harvest leaves/flowers/etc, will that affect the growth of fruits in any way?

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about [MAAAAJOR SPOILERS]
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:43:53 am »
If an adventurer manages to obtain items constructed from divine metals, brings them to a retired fort, and that fort is then unretired, can the dwarves at that fort use said items, or melt them down and forge the metal into new items?

DF Modding / Troubleshooting for gourmet mod
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:58:24 pm »
I need help figuring out what's going wrong in this mod I've been working on. Reaction classes don't seem to be working as intended, for some reason; e.g. with Longland flour, yeast powder (REACTION_CLASS:YEAST) and drip water (REACTION_CLASS:COOKING_WATER), plus their containers, I should be able to make Longland bread, and yet the game doesn't recognize that the ingredients are available. I'm also not entirely sure how to add materials to creatures without having them actually being used in the creature itself, only as reaction products (BAKED_MEAT_TEMPLATE and SAUSAGE_TEMPLATE). Could someone look over my raws and tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've included everything this mod touches.

DF Modding / Using/making plants and plant products via reactions?
« on: July 04, 2014, 01:25:37 am »
How would I go about using the following as reagents or products of reactions:
  • Plants
  • Milled plants
  • Plant extracts (barrel or vial)
  • Plant drinks (alcohols)
  • Seeds

Also, how do reactions handle stack size? Can I tell the game to, say, take 10 strawberries and a barrel of dwarven syrup, and produce 10 glazed strawberries? Would it create a stack of 10 glazed strawberries or ten stacks of one? Would it require a stack of ten strawberries, would it make the dwarf collect strawberries until they had exactly ten, or would it just take ten stacks of strawberries? What if the reaction called for one strawberry and produced one glazed, what would happen in regards to stacking then?

DF Gameplay Questions / Is glass immune to dragonfire?
« on: June 25, 2014, 06:48:29 am »
I ask because dragonfire apparently has weird properties where anything made of metal is safe, but stone, even magma-safe stone, will catch fire and boil away, and organic materials will just burn to ashes, but the wiki doesn't say anything about glass.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cooking efficiency?
« on: June 14, 2014, 05:23:27 pm »
How can I ensure that my dwarves use only the bare minimum of solid ingredients when cooking? Because it's getting annoying seeing them cook with four stacks of eggs and then complain they've run out of solid ingredients when I have half a stockpile's worth of syrups and honey and jelly and oils waiting to be cooked. Four solid ingredients per roast is three roasts wasted.

A little cottage by the sea, a garden of my own, a few pets to keep me company... I've always wanted a simple, solitary life, you know? I had a location picked out and everything, so I went to ask the overseer if I could go, and joy of joys, he said yes!

Then he packed me up with these other nine prats and told me to start exporting gourmet foods. Dammit.

Got bored, figured a succession game might be interesting. Using vanilla DF plus SethCreiyd's Flora and Fauna pack and a few tweaks of my own, embarking with ten dwarves on a tropical ocean/temperate savannah via DFusion.

DA RULES:
  • Play one year, as per the usual, and document it in-character. With images, preferably.
  • Please try not to bugger up other people's projects? This isn't Failcannon, folks.
  • At the end of your turn, you can leave a challenge for other overseers to complete if you so desire.
  • Please no Shaft of Enlightenment unless we're in severe danger of getting completely sodomized by an invading force with more members than our entire fort. Danger rooms, sure, but the Shaft is a bit too much.
  • Dwarf Therapist is highly recommended, and DFHack tools digv, clean, fixdiplomats, fixmerchants, showmood and siren are permitted.
  • EDIT: DFHACK IS NOW REQUIRED, AND THIS FILE MUST BE ADDED TO THE SAVE'S /RAW FOLDER (NOT /RAW/OBJECTS, SPECIFICALLY THE /RAW FOLDER). FAILURE TO USE THIS FILE WILL RESULT IN 90% OF CREATURES BORN DURING GAMEPLAY NEVER INCREASING IN SIZE. THANKS TO PUTNAM FOR MAKING THIS FIX. FEEL FREE TO USE THIS FILE IN ANY OTHER SAVES AS WELL.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Domesticating EVERYTHING: possible or no?
    « on: June 05, 2014, 04:49:54 am »
If, say, I start a fort in a Joyous Wilds forest biome, and then domesticate everything that biome has to offer, then abandoned that fort and started a new one in an Untamed Wilds desert, would I be able to purchase from the mountainhome the species I'd previously domesticated in the prior fort? Would I have to have sold them members of said species? Or is this just not possible and all I'd get to show for it is a full list of "Domesticated" in the animal training experience screen?

DF General Discussion / DF2014 and Farming: Compact Farms
    « on: April 02, 2014, 06:44:01 pm »
So now that we have the raws for the new version's massive number of crops, and discounting plants that are only available in good or evil biomes, we have a total of 96 aboveground crops. Now, as I'm sure you're most likely aware, Dwarf Fortress players like to do things Big, and one such Big Thing would be farming every single crop at once. But how to go about it? Just having all the farms on one level would be an unorganized mess, right?

Thus, the Farming Towers. Two square towers with 10*10 floor space on each floor, and two pump stacks oriented in opposite directions between the two towers, powered by windmills atop the structure, drawing from a cistern underneath - if I remember my fluid mechanics correctly, that should mean that once the top floors are filled, the pumps will start being able to fill the next level down, until all the levels have been flooded, at which point you simply drain the towers back into the cistern however you choose. Twelve floors will get you enough floor space for a 5x5 plot of every single surface crop in the game.

DF Suggestions / [GRAZER_FEED] tag for plants?
    « on: March 22, 2014, 07:40:04 pm »
I was discussing grazing animals with a friend I introduced to DF lately, and she asked if any of the egg-laying animals available on embark were grazers. I mentioned that the only egg-laying grazers were elk birds, and from there we started wondering if we'd ever be able to have dwarves provide grazing animals with food instead of requiring them to find their own - which, in the case of things like elk birds, can and will lead to them starving to death before their eggs hatch.

So, to this end, I propose the addition of a tag (present by default on cave wheat and longland grass) that allows that plant to be bundled up into bales or otherwise processed into feed, which can then be left in a pasture for animals to feed on as necessary, or hand-fed to animals like elk birds that may be unable to get their own food. Failing that, they could be enabled to eat from the tile next to their nest box. This tag would also help massively with underground keeping of grazing animals, especially if one is too far underground to get reliable access to grass without a lot of hassle. And by adding it as a tag, modders are free to create their own plants, even specifically for feeding animals with.

Mod Releases / Zaerosz' Animal Trainer Pack
    « on: March 20, 2014, 11:25:08 pm »
Adds [CHILD], [PET_EXOTIC] and in some cases [TRAINABLE] tags to many creatures, adds several new creatures, adds several new varieties of pseudo-leather, removes [GRAZER] tags, some animals now reproduce by egg, and kobolds have scales now.

Full description here, as well as download. I haven't slept in over a day, too lazy to repeat myself.

So after reading up a bit on animal training in DF2012, having not played in a long time, I decided to see just how far I can take it before everything blows up in my face. Adding [CHILD] and [PET_EXOTIC] tags to the raws wherever I see fit, I'm going to attempt to have a domesticated population of everything I can get my hands on. So far this only includes a female elk bird, a male magma crab and a female cave dragon (which I've set to have a childhood of 20 years), but it's a start.

I also added in giant cave crocodiles and giant unicorns, both tameable (as are their normal versions now), and I'm in a Joyous Wilds biome with a few tiles of Untamed Wilds mountains. Any suggestions, tips or requests?

    EDIT: Female bugbat acquired.
