Creative Projects / A music project of mine named from DF

I started a solo music project and grabbed the name "Elk Bird" from DF. It's electronic mainly, with some bass and other instruments thrown in. It's sort of synthwave/chillwave/lofi genre, if you're familiar with those.

I've got it up on Bandcamp, but you can also find it all sort of other places. Youtube, iTunes, Spotify, etc. It'd be cool if some dwarfs could give it a listen.

DF Modding / Making the autobutcher feasible

So, I'm experimenting with the so-called autobutcher (breeding cats some 10 stories up and dropping them onto a "dis-assembly platform"), but this does not yield any usable meat. All I get are mutilated corpses and severed appendages strewn all over, which aren't apparently butcherable.

Having a waterfall of exploding kittens for no rhyme or reason is nice and all, but I'd like to turn it into a meat industry. So, my question is:
1. can I mod it so that the tenderized cat bits are butcherable?
2. If not, can I mod kittens to be large enough to yield butcherable bits when they explode?
3. if all else fails, can I just mod in a custom workshop that accepts severed kitten heads to produce cat meat, or such assorted items?

It's come to my attention that my marksdwarves are not receiving the protection they need. Two main factors play into this:

1) I've noticed that a lot of enemies seem to be able to fire straight through fortifications at long distances. Elite bowman/crossbowman, for instance, seem to completely ignore fortifications.

2) It seems like ranged weapons have an unusually high chance of piercing the spine, permanently crippling my dwarves.

Regarding point 2) what uniform should I equip my dwarves with to minimize injury to vitals? I'm thinking of just giving them all steel breastplates, chain shirts and helmets. That will mostly eliminate the fatal/crippling injuries that they can sustain from a distance.

DF Modding / Utilizing blood

So I did a little searching beforehand and seem to have found that blood as a liquid is not usable in reactions.

HOWEVER, I'm under the impression that if I change the properties of blood to make it a glob I could use it in reactions.

Keeping in mind that I'm a modding noob, how could I:

1) change blood to a glob
2) make a reaction to convert said blood to booze or food (a link to a generic DIY reaction guide would be fine)
3) make it so that butchered creatures give globs of blood that can be used for 2)

On a side note, is there a simple way to make dwarf corpses butcherable? Also, has anyone ever successfully made conveyor belts? Search came up null on this.

So some traders show up at my fort. They're at the depot waiting. I notice a human hammerman is hauling some soap. "Odd" I thought. "What is he doing? Did a wagon drop that or something?" He puts the soap down near the depot and wanders off. Curious, I follow him around and see him do none other than walk up the the hospital in my tower and GRAB SOME SOAP FROM MY STOCKPILE and haul it down the the ground level. There was a fair bit of soap down there so he must have been doing it for a while. I issued a "kill order" (although it doesn't do anything) and he seems to have stopped. But how shall I deal with these guys?

Just a suggestion I guess. It's not like the lever does anything important. It's just connected to some floodgates. It's not like there's 15 goblins outside or anything.

Why the hell won't anyone PULL THE LEVER? They've done it before no problem. Now that there are three simultaneous ambushes no one wants to? What the hell is this? Is there a pull lever bug I haven't heard of? Is there a remedy?

DF Gameplay Questions / Maximizing sky z-levels

I was wondering if there's any way to get more above-ground z levels for a megaproject. It seems as though there's usually about 15 levels of sky above the highest point on the map. Is there any way to increase this number?

Wood logs? That's all? Hah, this mood will be easy to satisfy...

...

So, after having taken every log in my stockpile, he's still not satisfied. He has 39 assorted logs jammed into that shop right now. I'm gonna have to enlist my military on temporary chopping duty to get this guy enough logs.

Harder than it sounds. I've gone through about 10 worlds so far.

What I'm looking for is a volcano and ocean within a 3x3 or 4x4 local area of eachother and contact with other civs. Ideally it's on a peninsula so there's limited access from one side. Such a map would be epic but sadly my worldgen tweaking skills are not up to the challenge. Anyone have tips or care to give it a go?
