DF Gameplay Questions / No water source - not a single drop

Okay so I chose my embark site because it had a volcano and I could see flux from my site chooser.  I thought I would be making myself easier until I realized there was no water.  That's okay, I thought.  I'll just get an above ground farm running and brew all my drinks.  Now I have an injured dwarf.  It's pretty minor and he should heal up fine....except he needs water to drink.  I didn't think about this 3 years ago. 

Is there any way to get him something to drink, or is he destined to die?

On further inspection, his injury does not appear to be so minor.  He is missing his right upper leg.....I'm guessing he is carrying his lower leg around with him.

In either case, it seems like this might be a great concern as my fort matures if I'm not able to obtain any water for injured dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Splitting up my metal stockpiles

So I originally had only 1 metal bar stockpile, all of them mixed into different bins.  Now I'm trying to split it up so I can keep a visual tab on how much of each type of bar I have.

I can make separate stockpiles and they will move all the bins that happen to only have that type of metal into the correct stockpile.  Any of the mixed bins are not moved.  So I'll have like copper and steel in bin and it just sits there.  How can I get the dwarves to either split up the bins or to take the items out of the bins so I can then get them to be resorted?

DF Gameplay Questions / Outdoor farming

For outdoor farming do I have to make the tiles muddy before I can grow?  I though you didn't but I can't seem to plant anything.  I can select the seeds for the seasons but no job shows up under <j> and my farmer is just sitting there doing nothing.

Who else would love to see a bay 12 games store?  Maybe dwarf fortress themed mouse pads, t shirts, etc.  I think a lot of users could justify buying a mouse pad even if they aren't willing to straight up donate.

Howdy,

My game is crashing at a certain point in time.  It crashes and nothing is printed to the error log.  I have a save about 30 seconds before the crash luckily but no matter what I do I can't seem to get past it.

I am running 31.03 with genesis mod but I'm thinking it doesn't have anything to do with genesis because in the genesis thread someone reported the same problem and another user said that it occurs in vanilla too. 

What he didn't say, was if there is any way to get past it.

I'm not melting anything which I know causes some errors.  I also think that it *might* have something to do with a trade caravan leaving.  I'm not sure, but it just seems to be about the time that the caravan would be on it's way out. 

Does anyone have any ideas how to get past this?  I really love this fort and would hate to abandon.

Yeah so I accidentally just abandoned my fort.  I was just not paying attention and exited that way and now my save is gone.  Yes I know it prompts me.  Yes I know I'm an idiot.  Is there any way I can recover some or all of my fort?  Even if it's just the embark site?

I don't make any manual backups of any saves.

Please help

DF General Discussion / Buggy graphics (flashing old frames up)

I have had an issue for some time now where the game's graphics get very buggy.  It's quite annoying.  It seems somewhat random, but only occurs when I am doing things (entering menus mostly, but also a lot on the create new world/embark screen).  The screen starts blinking really fast.  It's almost like one of the frames in the buffers gets stuck because I am seeing older images. 

At first it was just annoying but now it's so bad I can't even embark because I can't see any of the information of the sites I'm choosing.

Normally a restart of the game fixed it for a time, but now it's happening as soon as I start the game.

Has anyone experienced this and does anyone have any solutions?

I am currently using genesis mod on 31.03 but even with vanilla I was getting the same issue (although perhaps not quite as frequent).

I have about 4 goats that got into my fortress and are running around scaring my dwarves.  I have a squad chasing them but I can't even get close to keeping up and hitting them.  Any ideas?

I've ready over the wiki and maybe i'm not quit understanding, or maybe it isn't clear.  Does a screw pump have to be magma safe or fire safe to pump magma.  Furthermore, which parts need to be safe?  All of them or just the block?

DF Gameplay Questions / Everyone is suffocating! (dfreveal)

I started a new embark and decided to give dfreveal a shot.  It discovered the spoiler that many players know about.  Immediately people started raging and calming down and suffocating for no apparent reason.  I'm assuming it's related.  Does anyone have any experience using this that could give me some pointers?

I really like where my fortress is right now, is there any way I can start a new embark in the same location if I don't remember where my fortress was.  I want to try doing it again with no traps this time around but I really liked the location because it had plentiful ore, fuel, and flux.  Thanks!

I also don't want to abandon and reclaim the fortress, I would like to start from scratch.

DF Gameplay Questions / Tons of items, unable to dump.

I seem to have a plethora of items laying all over the place, unable to be dumped.  They have a () surrounding them, not the {} of a forbidden item.  They are laying around in my stockpiles, and cluttering up the entrance to my fortress (many or all of them seem to be items dropped from enemies that have been killed).

A lot of the enemies were killed by incoming trade caravans.

I'm guessing this means the items are owned by someone else?

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how I can get rid of them.  I've been temped to dig out the ground beneath them and build another floor over the top to seal them up.

On a side note, is there any way to get rid of blood too?  Can I flood the ground and wash it away?  I'm very OCD about things looking neat.

I have plenty of food and booze and a well in my fortress, but my dwarves are constantly complaining of hunger, thirst, and I just had one dye of thirst.

Any ideas?

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange equipment

I had my dwarves wearing some wooden training axes.  I am now trying to get them to wear some iron ones (I was attacked by goblins and tried to fight them off with training axes...it didn't turn out well).  I assign them the iron axes and they are wearing them, but they are also still wearing the wooden training ones.  Which one will they use when attacking?  Or is it a dual wield thing and they will attack with both?

Last 2 seasons I have attracted no migrants. My first 3 waves were good - 7, 6, then 22.  But now I'm receiving none.  My trade liason visited and we did the agreement thing but the trade caravan still hasn't arrived. 

Any ideas on what is going on?
