DF Gameplay Questions / Penning Trade Agreements as the Capital
« on: September 25, 2023, 02:40:49 pm »
The King named my settlement the Capital and then took his entourage and left after three years.  My site is designated the Mountainhome, but my highest level noble is the Duke now.  At the same time I still have the Outpost Liaison living with me.  Is there a way to get the Liaison to, well, liaise?  I like being able to request "impossible" items like Giant Cave Spider Silk Goblets and gemstone Altars as fun things but he no longer meets with my mayor.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Making first contact
« on: September 19, 2023, 09:12:42 am »
What is the best way of making contact with civilizations you don't have contact with yet?  My current fort has no contact with friendly humans or elves so I'm getting no seasonal traders outside my local dwarf civ.

Is the tribute mission the best way to do this?  I'm looking to remain as neutral as possible with them.  I want good relations with them to get wagons quickly.

Also, how do tributes from evil civilizations work?  I'm down for some !!SCIENCE!! with some goblins or kobolds but wasn't sure if that would increase the amount of sieges if I demand tribute from Goblin sites that don't know about me yet.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Who is your favorite citizen?
« on: September 05, 2023, 12:06:39 am »
Is there a citizen in your current fort that is special to you for some reason?

In my current fort Niya-cat has to be my favorite:

She is a 61 year old cougar woman stalking my fort and looking for romance. She also happens to be a scholar of anatomy.  Younger dwarf men watch out!

My last human caravan was distracted by a swarm of Gray Langurs trying to steal things.  After dispatching the monkey menace, the caravan got a bit aimless and just wandered off at the end of the season leaving all of their goods in the depot.  But all of the items are still marked for trade in the depot.  If I "tidy up" my depot by seizing those spare goods will I anger my tall neighbors despite them no longer being present?  Would something like deconstructing the depot be better?

Do I just need to dwarf up and do it for SCIENCE?

DF General Discussion / Pleasant surprises in newer versions
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:39:57 pm »
So what are some fun things you've found out as you've moved to the more recent versions?

Today I found out serrated blades in my weapon traps make excellent troll shavers.  That's right Goblin Christmas now comes with yarn and fabric as well as goblinite.

I also found some unicorn hair thread in my stocks today.  They're officially the gift that keeps on giving at the butcher shop.  Now I just need to see if I can make some unicorn cloth.  It's not yarn, but it's also not thread... What loom task will net me some sparkly fabric?  I want my units to flatten the goblins with shiny silver hammers and sparkly unicorn cloaks.  It makes the beatings feel more humiliating.

DF Gameplay Questions / Nobody can move the blob!
« on: March 09, 2011, 03:15:09 pm »
Are blobs still mostly invulnerable?  My digging unearthed a blob of steam that is wandering the lower forest.  I'd love to make it hammer time and send out the squads to take it apart, but don't want to be hauling my whole military back in featherwood boxes.

How much Fun am I in for if I mine through that wall and charge him?

DF Gameplay Questions / Baiting a siege
« on: March 04, 2011, 12:35:16 am »
So Goblin Christmas has arrived at my fortress, there is even a partridge in a pair tree this time (the lead goblin is riding a giant save swallow.)  Sadly, they don't seem to want to deliver their presents.  My bridges are down, my military is out of sight, but the elves (the kinds that deliver presents, not the hippy tree traders) and their wondrous offerings of troll leather and goblinite are all just standing around picking their noses.  What can I offer them as the proverbial plate of cookies to get them to come down the chimney (and by chimney I mean 3x3 pathway lines with cage traps, weapon traps, a war giant leopard, and a giant desert scorpion)?  Do I need to toss a kid in a cage and build him outside to tempt them?  I'll do that if need be.

DF Gameplay Questions / Goblin crack suicide squads!
« on: March 04, 2011, 12:25:22 am »
I have struck blue and the goblins are staring to take notice.  But they seem to have learned their battle tactics from People's Front of Judea.  Every time an ambush pops up, there's a human in the center of it.  He proceeds to attack the goblins in the ambush party and ends up killing most of the raiding party.  The remaining goblins run away.  I've had four ambushes end up this way now.

Have my goblin neighbors conquered human slaves in the past and they are rising up now?  Are my human allies just that willing to defend my borders for me?  Anyone else have this happen to them before?

DF General Discussion / An open letter to my second mayor
« on: June 09, 2010, 10:14:19 am »
Dear Urist McEvenmoreuselessthanusualsinceyoureaduplicatenoble,

We were getting along just fine.  You love gold.  You mandated production of all kinds of gold items.  We had fun, built statues of Antelope fiends and I decorated your room with them to remind you of the horror that can befall a noble like yourself if you don't behave.

Sadly, you also love creepy crawlers.  And lately you have asked those in the clan to produce great dwarvish crafts from their teeth.  I know you have seen the one writhing around our food stores and I know it brings you happy thoughts.  But no matter how Urist McSlaughterhouse would cut it, I would get no teeth to appease you.

This is greatly disappointing and I do not feel I will be able to wait for a reelection.  Therefore it is with a maybe less than heavy heart I have decided to let you go.  The only question I'm left pondering, my dear Urist McEvenmoreuselessthanusualsinceyoureaduplicatenoble, is how?

DF Gameplay Questions / [Solved] Grisly decor and butchery
« on: May 12, 2010, 04:01:53 pm »
So I've built a rather efficient abattoir around the entrance to my fortress.  A nice long hallway with sewn images depicting dwarves, roaches, and cheese as well as fine statues all leading up to the rotating serrated steel blades.  It even boasts kaolinite walls and floors so that it doesn't show blood stains.

I just ran my first couple goblin ambushes through it and now I'm left with a lot of mangled flesh, bone and detritus lying around jamming my precision machine.

Can the butcher use goblin flesh? I would think nothing says loving like goblin intestine biscuits from the oven.  Can I fill barrels with goblin blood to display to would be invaders? Or can you even bucket up blood and make a bloodfall with a mist generator? Can I at least use the goblin bones for deocrating crafts and making bone bolts?

It looks like all bones can be used for crafting and armor, do I just need to make a garbage dump next to a carftdwarf's shop and pile the remains up?  And would goblin bone gaunlets or greaves be a waste of armor space on my militia?

I know I'm being a a bit macabre, but I just feel good seeing those green bastards fall after early ambushes have taken three of my starting forts in 2010 (I tried military instead of traps first, big mistake...)

I am working to train up my military and had the luck of getting an extra hunter in my most recent immigration wave with really good Marksdwarf stats. So I suit him up to head a unit of marksdwarves, the Raging Volcanoes, I set their equipment set to the base archer type, and they go grab an assortment of axes and picks...

At that point I just go to assign the Ragers specific Crossbows. I just forged a few iron ones.  My list only has a legendary spear Urist McForgeypants made recently and then a list of fungiwood spears and towercap blowguns.  Where did those come from?  Dealing with that failure, I try to set the not so raging molehills to crossbow as weapon... They hold tightly to their hard won axes and stand around in the training hall practicing personal drills. They have quivers available, 100 bolts set for ammunition, and those are left in the store piles as well.

I want to see a hail of bolts skewering goblins.  Instead I get a bunch of do nothing dwarves picking their noses next to an outdoor armor stand.

On a similar note my wrestlers have also decided they want axes as well as not to feel left out.  I remove weapon from their equipment list and they also refuse to drop their tree-dulled hatchets.  I try and forbid/dump the weapons, and that seems to do little to make them toss the items either.

How do I get my soldiers to use the weapons or lack thereof I want?
