DF Gameplay Questions / I MUST HAVE YARN CLOTH!!!
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:56:45 pm »
Okay, I've been importing an old save into all the new versions for quite awhile and so far it hasn't been an issue. However, I just ran into a serious problem. One of the dwarves has been taken by a mood, and is demanding yarn cloth. I had no clue what yarn cloth was, but a quick look at the wiki tells me that you need to shear animals to get it.

Okay, that's a pretty big problem right there. Since I'm using an older save I can't shear any animals. Which means I can't complete the mood. Which means I'm fucked. So is there some way to hack some yarn cloth into the game? Or make the mood go away? Or can I actually shear some animals if I mess with the raws? I'll take any solution so long as it does not involve the dwarf failing the mood.

DF Gameplay Questions / Goblins and Ambushes
« on: January 06, 2011, 11:04:58 pm »
So I was poking through the raws and noticed that, unlike Elves and Kobolds, Goblins don't have the [AMBUSHER] tag. From what I know this would mean that they no longer send ambushes. Do they still send ambushes in 3.18?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help me fill this damn moat
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:35:28 am »
Alright, if you've been following my Reveredtour LP, you know that I'm currently having some difficulty filling the moat. What I thought would be a simple task of merely diverting the river into the empty moat, but I can only assume this isn't working. So I tried diverting the ocean into the moat, and that doesn't seem to be working either. If the moat is actually filling up, it will won't be full until years from now. That is unacceptable.

Here's a picture that outline the current moat design;

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Notice how the water seems to reach a certain point and then stop. You might assume that's because the moat hasn't had enough time to fill up yet, but the water has been stopping at those points for weeks. I believe that the temperature causes the water to evaporate before it reaches the edges of the moat. I'm not sure how to resolve this problem either, as I've never dealt with temperature based problems beyond the cold.

So here are what I think are my current options;

-Sit back and wait to see if the moat eventually fills up
-Cut up the earth of Reveredtour even more by carving additional tunnels to the river and ocean, hoping that multiple water sources will cause the water to reach the edges before evaporation
-cover the bottom of the moat in floortiles (not sure if this does anything, but someone suggested it)
-Turn of temperature temporairly and see if the moat fills up then. The elf option.

Anyone have some advice on what to do here? I'm really sick of this fucking moat.

So imagine that you are a dwarf, wandering through a typical fortress. Suddenly you are confronted by one of the many wild animals you can encounter in fortress mode. Since you're not an adventuring bad ass, you have no experience fighting alone and are now at the mercy of a terrifying beast.

Which would you hate to encounter the most?

For me, it would be a jabberer. Those things sound absolutely terrifying. Crushed between the beaks of a massive cave bird, which then swallows you whole. To me that's one of the worst ways to go. I have no idea how goblins can tame and ride those things.

Also, try to exclude forgotten beasts, mega beasts, and clowns since those are the most obvious choices.

DF Gameplay Questions / Vanishing Zombies
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:19:08 pm »
So my game appears to have a bit of a problem with vanishing zombies. Whenever an undead is killed, its body dissolves into nothingness. I have no clue why. Originally I thought it was a result of my modding, but I downloaded a clean version of DF and the exact same thing appear to happen. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there some way to fix it? Or am I the only one, and I fucked something up? If so, what could I have possibly done to cause this?

If you want to test this for yourself, go into arena mode and spawn a weak zombie. Have said zombie be killed, and see if it just vanishes rather than leaving a corpse. This is the issue I am currently experiencing with my game. Considering I'm running an LP on an evil biome, vanishing zombies could potentially ruin it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I am at a loss
« on: November 12, 2010, 07:13:51 pm »
After over 22 in game years, I finally feel like I have hit the bottom of the barrel with my current fortress. Everything I do seems incredibly futile. There is little hope for success, yet at the same time failure never manages to crush me completley. My fortress is trapped in an eternal twilight.

Allow me to explain the situation; a series of unfortunate events cut down my fortress population to only a handful of dwarves. There was no way to keep them safe on the surface, so I herded them underground into a safety room.  There I aimed to train them into hardened soldiers, so that they could stand up to even the toughest of enemies. Fate had other plans though, as I was soon plagued by a foe I can not destroy. A mysterious disease had appeared in my fortress, one that was a guaranteed death sentence. Any dwarf that contracts the disease was fine at first, but soon after they would begin to feel faint. Every inch of their body would suddenly be covered in boils, which would then spray pus and blood all over the floor. The afflicted dwarves wandered aimlessly, leaving a trail of pus and blood behind them before collapsing to the floor as an exploding pile of disease and rot.

I had no way of stopping this disease. I didn't even know what the source was. In a panic, I forced the survivors further underground. In the dark depths of the caverns, I managed to establish a stable outpost. A renewable source of food and drink, along with materials to build with. But the dwarves were trapped, prisoners of the earth. I waited many months, not knowing what to do but continue training the remaining dwarves. Then migrants arrived, and to my joy they did not catch the plague. I quickly herded them underground into the safety of the colony. It was only when they were trapped inside that the disease killed them. All of the migrants suffered gruesome deaths, while the original dwarves remained unharmed. This process repeated itself when a new batch of migrants arrived.

It seems that no matter what I do, I am doomed to be caught in an endless loop of death. Migrants arrive, appear fine, and then turn into festering corpses. Yet the resident dwarves remain fine. As if the game is toying with me, keeping the dwarves alive while killing any chance of me reclaiming the forts former glory. I can't bring myself to abandon when I have played it for so long. And yet I feel trapped, pointlessly hoping for salvation even though I know it will never come.

So at this point, I don't know what to do. I only have 3 stable dwarves. The forgotten beasts outnumber them 4:1. A deadly disease ruins any progress I make. What can I do at this point? I don't want to abandon after spending this much time in the fort, but I don't want to intentionally send my dwarves to their death either. It just seems unfitting  :-\

DF General Discussion / Thinking of starting a DF LP
« on: November 12, 2010, 02:49:26 pm »
Not sure where a thread like this would go, so I figured I would just put it here.

I've been seriously considering starting up a Dwarf Fortress Let's Play. Not on this site, but over on the Escapist, which is another website I frequent. I doubt I could make a LP without treading on ground that's been covered a dozen times on this site. One the main reasons I want to make the LP is to introduce more people to DF, and the Escapist is the ideal place for that since almost no one there plays it. Plus I won't be stepping on the other threads in the community stories section found here.

I was just wondering if there's anything important I should know before starting something like this. I am familiar with DF Let's Plays and Let's Plays in general, so I doubt I would screw it up majorly. But I figure someone here might have something important to tell me. If not, no harm in asking.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf Therapist
« on: September 16, 2010, 10:06:16 pm »
So how many of you haven't moved on to the new version yet because Dwarf Therapist isn't compatible with it yet? I've basically become dependent upon that program to keep my forts organized and efficient, so the thought of not being able to use it is terrifying.

DF Gameplay Questions / The Flooding Caverns
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:49:19 pm »
Okay, I have a pretty big problem. One simple mistake involving the ocean and miners has caused a massive surge of water to pour into my fortress. Now since I build on top of the ocean, the fortress itself is safe. However, everything below to hole in the ocean is flooding. So everything from the first cavern down to the magma sea will eventually be submerged. The water is pouring in at an alarming rate. Many of the Dwarves weren't even able to outrun it. However, some of them are running down to the abyss. This layer has yet to be flooded, but I'm sure the water will soon reach it. It will, however, take a long time to be flooded completley.

So basically, I have two questions; do you think there is any way to save the surviving workers? I've ordered a tunnel constructed to the surface , but I don't know if it will be completed in time. Any one have any ideas about what I could do?

Second, do you think there will be any way to unflood the caverns? I doubt there is, but I'm determined to keep this fort going on as long as possible, and the caverns are essential to many of the main industries.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves and Swimming
« on: August 27, 2010, 02:59:56 am »
Having embarked on a terrifying ocean, my dwarves often fight undead fish near bodies of water. One of the leading causes of death is not injuries from these fights, but rather drowning. The Dwarves will often "dodge" the undead and fall into the ocean in the process. Or they will do something that is both incredibly badass and incredibly stupid; dive into the ocean and fight the undead bellow the waves (badass), and then drown to death immediately after winning. So I think it would be worth training my military in the swimming skill. Problem is, I can't figure out a safe way to train Dwarves in water without them drowning. Anyone have any experience with water training and can help me with this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Why are my Dwarves killing each other?
« on: August 25, 2010, 09:31:30 pm »
I have a pretty big problem right now. My military as gone crazy and started fighting each other, and the civilians. This is not because they have gone berserk or insane. It just seems to be random dwarficide.

It all started when I ordered my military to kill the Dwarven merchants. The reason I did this was because the merchants were glitched and would not leave. This happened before with the humans. They stayed in my depo forever, and as a caravan did not come next year. So I knew I had to kill these merchants otherwise I would never get another Dwarven caravan again. After the merchants were killed, everyone in the fort went crazy. My axe lords are chopping up children. Masons are tossing haulers into the water. Former comrades are dueling to the death while doctors alternate between recovering the wounded and strangling them.

I just don't get what caused this. Obviously the Fortress is beyond fixing at this point so I will have to save scum. I just want to know if there is any way to dispose of the merchants without the fortress descending into utter chaos.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What wild creature do you hate the most?
« on: August 15, 2010, 11:09:51 pm »
So there is a huge variety of animals and creatures that roam the wilds in Dwarf Fortress. Some of them are harmless, some of them are irritating, and others can be downright deadly. I learned this in my most recent embark, in which I encountered the Ogre. This creature quickly became one of my biggest problems. They hunt down any Dwarf they see, mercilessly crushing the life out of them. Even my military couldn't stand up to them, due to their lack of armor and weapons. They have killed over 20 Dwarves over the span of 3 years, and there is no end to the problem they cause me.

So I was wondering if there were any other creatures that other players have bad experiences with (Obviously excluding civilizations and megabeasts).

DF Gameplay Questions / What's wrong with this Dwarf?
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:43:19 pm »
So a Goblin Archer shot one of my Dwarves several times. However, the Dwarf was on a cliff inside my fortress so he was able to crawl into safety easily. He then fell unconscious right at entrance to my fort. This happened a season ago. He hasn't moved since then, and might as well be dead. In fact, I'm not sure about how he is even still alive. He hasn't eaten or drank since he received the injury. He's just been lying in front of the fort.

I was wondering why nobody bothered to take him to the hospital. But it seems like he keeps trying to bring himself to the hospital, despite being unconscious. I've come to this conclusion because I've been bombarded with this message constantly;

There isn't a Goblin Swordsman anywhere near him. I can't figure out why he would be freaked out by an imaginary swordsman, especially when he is unconscious. Point is, he's gotten to be rather annoying. So is there anyway to save this guy, and if so how? If not, any ideas about how to get rid of him without injuring the other Dwarves that walk by him on a regular basis?

I've got a problem with my fortress that I can't figure out how to resolve. I built a wall surrounding my underground farm to protect it from Forgotten Beasts. The top of this wall is connected to the edge of the map, which apparently means monsters can enter the map on top of the wall. A zombie troll happened to enter the map this way, and it is ruining all of the the work in the caverns. The troll can't actually do anything though since it is on top of the wall. This sounds good, but it also means my military can not reach it. I tried to construct a staircase to reach the troll, but none of the builders can go near it without getting sacred and running off. So I'm currently at a loss as to what to do to resolve the situation. Any advice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dying from thirst
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:22:25 pm »
For some reason my dwarves keep dying from thirst. So far 2 of them have randomly collapsed from thirst, and I can't figure out why. Earlier I noticed my booze stockpile was dangerously low, so I ordered for more to be produced and constructed a well just in case. However, my booze supply never reached 0 anyways. Despite this my dwarves appear to be dying of thirst. There are two sources of drink available now, so I can't figure out why they wouldn't drink from them. Are the dwarves just not getting a drink, despite their thirst status?
