After about a year of on-duty training, none of my 10 dwarves have passed 10% of their way to level 1 axedwarf. They've gained only very minor skills in dodge (~30%).

Am I missing something?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Strange indoor wavesplashes in ocean fort
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:39:21 am »
I've embarked near an ocean, and I figure what's a good use for a ton of water? Drowning traps of course. But as I was in the process of setting it up, I noticed something very odd. I will try to explain as best I can, english is not my native language.

http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8876/trap.png

What you see is a dug-out layout for a trap gauntlet. The lower part will be a drowning trap, and the part above will be falling traps. You should be able to make out the 3tile wide path snaking through (entrance not yet dug).

The Z-level below contains a dug-out water river leading to a reservoir (which I intended to pump from), which has channeled access to water in the picture. I've marked it with a red rectangle. The river is constantly connected to the ocean.

Now here's the odd part. When a wave arrives on the beach, the markers for where the wave splashes, signified by my red arrow in the picture, bugs out. Instead of splashing somewhere where it ought to, it travels through the walls, riding on the river below, until it reaches the end of the river. But the two z-levels are not connected in any way. Thus, my completely enclosed trap layout receives magical splashes of water from waves in an underground river. The area is completely roofed over.  (just to be clear, the channeled tiles in the top of the picture are not connected to the water reservoir/river)

So, how do I stop the magical waves from wallhaxing?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Request for embark spot with 5+ biomes
« on: July 06, 2010, 11:33:16 am »
Hello all,

I'm a bit of a sucker for embarks with many biomes. I like the variety of enemies it brings, and how it mixes up the layers in the ground.

However, after roughly a day searching, I've not yet found an embark spot with more than 4 different biomes (note: I mean different types of biome, not just "the same kind but split up").

So, does anyone have an embark spot they want to share with more than 4 biomes?

Edit: 6x6 embark would be max for me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Need help to attract gobbos
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:57:37 pm »
I know this topic is going to sound like boasting, but it's really not.

This is my 2nd fortress and I have a crude understanding of things like bridges, moats, traps and so on. My fort is well defended by about 60 level 10-15 axe/macedwarves (quite a few missing their left hands from troglodytes presumably attacking their shield hands).

Now I want the blaze of glory. The last stand. The hordes coming over the walls. Once more unto the breach, dear dwarves. My fort is by no means impossible to attack, but
the forces sent against me number in the tens, and I want them in the hundreds.

From the wiki, I understand that gobbo sieges seem to happen "sooner or later". It seems to be tied to wealth - exported wealth? Or just overall wealth?

What else can I do to attract goblins? My location has no access to kobold civilizations, but humans do lead the occasional gobbo ambush.
Edit: I'm in a savage neutral zone.
