DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / elephants...
« on: October 07, 2010, 01:12:02 pm »
So an elven caravan rolls into my humble abode of simmering magma and half built pumps stacks... with two caged elephants, So I purchased one of these large semi-gentle animals in a cage, I was wondering how I go about removing them from the cage and putting them to use... for farming and... Clown smashing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / underground perpetual motion... eek
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:05:28 pm »
alrighty, so Im making my FIRST EVER!!! pump stack... and I have to power it some how. so I decide hey! lets try a perpetual motion scheme!

well I pull it off the wiki trying to figure out a little of it through research and I get it so my pump is built and I build one of the water wheels then BLAM! the entire room floods... luckily I had for some reason built a door closing this section off from the rest of the world!

i head fed the room from a river if that makes any difference, and there was a gear assembly over the channel infront of the light side of the pump (pump isnt running yet)

the other thing is that the river is 1 z-level BELOW the entire operation. Do waterwheels mess with water pressure? because last time I researched it water cant go up z levels with out pumps interference...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Walking "Across" ramps
« on: July 23, 2010, 08:54:00 pm »
okay, so I'm working on my first fractural room design right now.

I built it around my rampwell though, and 2 of the arms have to come out of the walls that the ramps connect to. I was wondering if a dwarf has to walk across a ramp does it take more steps? or is it the same I.E do they have to go down the ramp to -1 z-level or do they just walk across?

The other reason I was wondering this is that I am trying to find out which is more effective over all... a stairwell or a rampwell

so I currently have a fort on surface level. I am in the process of moving it right above / next to magma level for easy forging.

I was wondering if I channel down to a layer below my fort and make a lake, and then remove the floor on the level above... will it flood my fort? will water pressure force the water up into my fort that is 135 levels below?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / *spoiler* EVERYWHERE
« on: July 16, 2010, 06:58:43 pm »
Well I was mining down trying to find magma... well I found it and saw a sparkle at the far side of the magma pool...

it was raw adamantite!!!!!!

I got so freaking excited that I immediately tunneled to the top of the tower the adamantite made... but tower i mean a long hollow tube that was about 4x4 for 10 or so z-levels

well right once I broke into it demons came pouring out and offered my dwarves with a large helping of FUN.

at this point my fortress has one miner left. the only reason he is alive is his uncanny ability to build a wall and wall himself in a 3x3 room away from the demons.

I was wondering if this was a common occurrence? or was I just lucky??

EDIT 1&2: first to change name to Demons EVERYWHERE *spoiler*

and then to appease Urist "  *spoiler* EVERYWHERE  "  :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ramp set-up
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:32:57 pm »
So I was reading a thread recently that stated Ramps took less FPS then Up/Down stairs. I was wondering first off is this true?

and if so I was thinking of using a pillar form of ramps. The odd z-levels would be the same as each other and the evens would be the same as eachother.

I was thinking this:

X = Floor (walls surrounding outside most tiles)

▼ = Down Ramp

▲ = Up Ramp

XXX
X▼X▲
X▼X▲      even z-levels
X▼X▲
XXX

   XXX
▲X▼X
▲X▼X     odd z-levels
▲X▼X
   XXX

the other thing I was think of doing is adding another floor tile above and below the up ramps like so:

 XXXX
X▼X▲
X▼X▲      even z-levels
X▼X▲
 XXXX

 XXXX
▲X▼X
▲X▼X     odd z-levels
▲X▼X
 XXXX

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Starting a new fort
« on: July 10, 2010, 05:59:43 pm »
So, been playing for a couple weeks... I usually dont get far though, I end up running out of things to do or cant think of what else to do.

but I have noticed that it takes FOREVER to get a fort started, and I also feel like whenever I do underground farms they make all my designs and plans mess up.

I was wondering if there was a way to automate this first portion of the game, or do you always just have to suffer through before this thing happens that I have heard of all over these forums... i believe the term is FUN? (I also believe that there should be a disclaimer that this "fun" usually involves death, dismemberment, and/or mass insanity)

DF General Discussion / I can run legacy but not SDL
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:37:54 pm »
The title is pretty much it...

when I try to run SDL i get an error about the file "index" not being in the "data" folder.

it says  it might be missing or corrupt... I first figured this out trying to us Mayday's tileset.

any ideas what might be wrong?

(running vista by the way)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / STRANDED MINERS!!!!!
« on: June 22, 2010, 07:41:55 pm »
Well then I find myself in a large pickle currently.

First off. Using the technique of dig into a murky pool to flood a large room is taking FOREVER to make everything into mud (not really that big of a deal)

BUT!! trying to make it faster I had my dwarfs make some channels going down. I assumed making the room underneath bigger would allow the water to drain faster... WRONG

So, my problem is that my 2 mining dwarfs are stuck down below. I tried making up stairs from where they were... no such luck. so I assigned another dwarf to mining and said... HEY YOU! get over here and make some stairs so they can get out... didn't work. (not sure why)

my final idea was lets just mine all the way to my other updown stairwell that goes down like 100 z levels. well right now I have 2 dwarfs that cant reach it and one that for some reason refuses.

the 3rd dwarf I made mining I didnt remove his other jobs, would that make a difference?

any ideas why this is?
