DF General Discussion / Terrifying Advert
« on: August 06, 2010, 06:55:55 am »
So I was just browsing youtube, when I looked over to the ad at the side of the page, and almost shat myself:

 ::) :-[

Anyone else seen DF references that make you think "woah!" in random objects?

Okay, the title is a little bit misleading - this isn't a very big megaproject at all (in fact, it's probably not even worth the name "megaproject", but I can't think of a better word). This is my first real attempt at something like this, and I couldn't be bothered spending days and days with this thing, that's just not what I find enjoyable.

Anyway, now that that's out of the way, it’s time for a tail of a very strange group of dwarves indeed...

“It all started when Urist McCohen found a mysterious old book in the bottom of one of his chests in the Mountainhome. Upon reading its table of contents, he discovered that it was not one book, but in fact a collection of several books, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, the list went on and on. Mildly interested by this trinket, Urist flipped to a random page, which he could see was apparently "Ezekiel 40". He began to read the first line.

”What I saw was the Temple, and there was a wall round it. The man took his measuring rod, which was three metres high and three metres thick. [...] Beyond it there was a passage, which had three guard rooms each side [...]”

Urist soon began to realise that written in this book were the blueprints for some kind of building. Also written was a prediction that upon this building being complete, Armok himself would descent from his throne of blood to bring judgement upon all of the creatures of the world...”

To cut a long story short, I have had my Dwarves build an accurate replica of the Third Temple as described in the Bible (you can read it yourself to check, if you don’t think my design is how it should be). I should note, for anyone who doesn’t know, some Jews believe that when this temple is rebuilt in real life on Mount Moriah in Israel, the dead will be resurrected, there will be a messiah, and lots of other cool stuff. Most Jews think the events will happen in the other order though, by this I mean that the messiah will come first, and He will build the temple.

I had a little trouble with running out of z-levels. By the time I realised you can only have 15 z-levels without editing the raws, I’d already built a substantial amount of it, and I couldn’t be bothered going back and redoing it all :P

Anyway, here is the final product:

What do you think? Oh and by the way, I should mention that I’m not Jewish, I’ve just always been fascinated by other cultures and religions.

Here are some pictures which have been made by other people based off what's written in the bible:

Oh, and I won't tell you what happens in Dwarf Fortress when you build it - but let's just say it makes the HFS look like a fluffy wambler in comparison...
