DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Focused or mixed weapon skills?
« on: November 19, 2010, 01:40:48 am »
Hello.

I've been playing around in Adventure Mode a lot and love the new combat system. I was wondering on what the forumers preferred way to train weapon skills is. Do you focus solely on your chosen weapon, ignoring opportunity attacks unless they are done with that weapon; Mostly focus on your weapon, but use opportunity attacks if they seem decent/fun (For instance, chomping a throat with your teeth or curbstomping a downed enemy); or do you mix freely, using both your weapon and all kinds of opportunity attacks, and perhaps even some non-opportunity ones?
Personally, I like some variation with my attacks, throwing in a kick here or a punch there to liven things up a bit between the slashes, stabs and pummels.
Which way do you prefer or think is the most valid?

DF Modding / Need some help with simple RAW modding.
« on: November 14, 2010, 02:12:28 am »
After getting annoyed with every single one of my adventurers being created with extremely long hair (Seriously, it's no wonder that they die so easily when they trip over their own hair all the time!) I decided that I would try looking at the raw files for the first time ever. But... I have no idea what to do. I've never done anything with those files before. I assume that I'm supposed to change the numbers in [TISSUE_LAYER_APPEARANCE_MODIFIER:LENGTH:0:0:0:0:0:0:0], but I don't know what to change.
Any help with giving my hairy adventurers a much needed haircut would be appreciated :)

Hello
I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place, but since I'm having two problems with different kinds of dwarf managing utilities (And a separate tutorial as well) I wasn't sure where to put my questions...
I am pretty new to Dwarf Fortress, so I have been playing through The Complete and Utter Newbie tutorial (As well as watching captain_duck's videos). Everything went well after a few bumps because of my slow laptop, but now I have run into problems.
I reached the chapter in the tutorial about dwarf management. Tired of setting my dwarfs tasks one at a time, I was quite happy. However, when I started up Dwarf Manager...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As you can probably spot at once, I am missing the bottom menu from which I'm supposed to load my game! I tried many different versions of DM, but none of them worked. So, I decided to try using Dwarf Therapist instead. However... none of the DT versions were compatible with the DF version I was using >_< (I'm using 40D18 with Mayday's tileset, I tried using the version offered in the tutorial, but that one didn't work properly with my laptop).
So... I'm a bit stumped. I will probably use Dwarf Therapist in the future because it works with the newer versions of DF, but for now I want to finish this tutorial, and figure out why my stuff doesn't work.
I'm using an Eee laptop with a Japanese Windows XP (I live in Japan at the moment). I suspect that this might be why DM is glitching for me, I've had troubles running other stuff as well that is unrelated to DF.
So, if you have any suggestions or know what I should do, please tell me. If you know of some good combination of 40D##/Tileset/Dwarf Managing tool then that would be good too, I can just move my Save folder around and it should work with different DF versions that are close to that, I assume.
Thanks ^_^; Sorry if I got long-winded
