DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do-it-yourself fossils
« on: March 24, 2009, 04:04:30 pm »
My most recent fortress is at a site with both a magma shaft and an aquifer.  I decided I wanted to use the obsidian around the magma shaft as a shortcut past the aquifer, but didn't want to deal with those pesky fire imps harassing my fortress.  So I dug down to the aquifer near the shaft, and started pumping water across the top of the magma to form an obsidian cap, sealing the magma off until I was ready to open it back up.

One of the fire imps decided to come up and see what the commotion was at exactly the wrong time, and attempted to pass through some magma as it was in the process of solidifying.  The result: there is now a space the contents of which are as follows: warm damp rough-hewn obsidian wall, 3 fire imp bones, and fire imp skull.

The fire imp got fossilized. ;D

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / First new version adventure
« on: October 30, 2007, 11:29:00 pm »
I just ran my first adventurer in the new version.  I got sent off to kill a minotaur in a cave, and when I found it, it turned out to be more of a burrow - tunnels dug out of red sand, white sand, and chalk.  Really cool.  I spent some time killing assorted giant animals and their anthropomorphic analogues, before a giant rat I was fighting killed me.  I hit it in the head, enraging it, and it bit me, latched on to my head, and shook me around until my head tore off, with my body flying away and my head staying in its mouth.  A beautifully gruesome death.

I'm a little disappointed about one thing, though.  I bought a little bit of swimming skill for my adventurer, and I didn't run across a body of water to try it out in before I died.  Oh well, maybe next time.

So, I found a really beautiful site for a fortress.  A brook, a volcano, easy access to soil, rocks, plants, and tree... and hey!  What's this message?  I just discovered a hidden cave!  Full of kobolds!

We shall see what develops.  I predict horrible death for my dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / nifty 3x3 starting location in 38a
« on: February 06, 2008, 07:09:00 pm »
I generated a new world, and in a fit of madness decided to try a fortress on a volcanic island.  When I created my new fort, I discovered that my dwarves had stopped their wagon on the ceiling of a circular cave, with an entrance just to the southwest, and inside the cave was a wide ledge surrounding a magma vent running all the way down to the bottom of the area.

If you bring a couple of steel bars, you can set up a magma smelter and magma forge, indoors, without doing any digging at all!

Admittedly, the magma dwellers are giving me a bit of trouble, but hopefully I'll manage to deal with them.

If anyone wants to give it a try, the seed is 76707960, and the location is:

I just noticed that finishing construction of bridges made from green glass blocks requires the mason job, but it gives experience in jeweler.

DF Bug Reports / armed civilians

It seems to be possible to arm your civilians with axes.

Enable woodcutting.  Your civilian will go pick up an axe.  Set their weapon preference to axe.  Disable woodcutting.  In my experience, they will hang onto the axe even though they are neither a woodcutter nor a soldier.

DF Suggestions / Recipes

quote:
Req162, ENTITY RECIPES, (Future): Civilization initial recipes. This also includes some food management for civs so food items can be created more easily. Requires Req129

Probably still a long way off, but I thought it might be interesting to think about fun ideas for standard recipes.

Here's one: we have cave fish and lye, why not have Dwarven Lutefisk?
