DF Modding / Some help with tilesets in general.

So I'm not quite sure how tileset assignment is decided. I get the basics, the RAWs refer to a part of the tileset via a number, but apparently there are multiple tilesets? I've only ever seen the one (curses600x800 or whatever the dimensions are), and I'm not sure what tileset is being referred to when the RAWs call a tile, it all seems to be using the same tag?

In one case I do understand tile assignments, and that seems to be creatures (where it's just assigning a letter). However this raises another question, which is how are tiles being used for more then one thing. Is there really no tile usage overlap in DF?

I don't really know how tiles are determined beyond the very basics it seems like, and I'd like to figure out more, as I'd like to make a tileset for my mod at some point, and I obviously need to know how all this hooks up to do that!


In short...

1. RAW tile assignments don't seem to make sense to me, outside of letter assignments. I'll grab a tile ID from the tilesets page on the wiki, and it'll reference an entirely different tile then I was aware of.

2. RAW tile assignments make sense when there's a letter assignment ([TILE:'A'] or whatever), but I don't know how those tiles are being used for multiple things (if they are? is there really no creature tile overlap in the game? Regardless I'm pretty sure I've seen it used for multiple things in mods, and this was before dfhack TWBT support IIRC, but I'd be willing to accept that my assumptions are just wrong on this one)

3. There seem to be multiple tilesets? I don't know if these are legitimately multiple tilesets or just a tileset being used in a different way depending on what you're looking at (the biggest example I can think of is the overworld map vs fort mode viewing).

DF Gameplay Questions / Question about large creatures and butchering

As I understand it larger creatures take longer to butcher, can a creature rot while it's being butchered? or is it sort've "in stasis"?

Also my understanding is it's one task that "deconstructs" the corpse when it's done, and the dwarf isn't actually butchering individual parts, is that accurate? or will the dwarf butcher the corpse piece by piece?

Is there a cap to how many different wild plants can show up on a given map? IIRC animals have something like that, but I didn't know if plants had a similar thing going on.

Got an interaction that's not working. I've fiddled with it a bit and successfully made it vanish from the interaction menu, where it was there and just not doing anything before.

I deleted the Language_SYM file because I'm a doof. So yeah, take note, if the language_sym file is missing the game will wig out!

I've not really even altered that much, so I'm not sure why this is happening at all!

I'll say I did deleted all the creature entries in the creature_standard file but humans, and added a bunch of castes to humans. Deleted all but human and animal men in the entity file. Otherwise no changes. It's possible I've missed adding something to make humans playable in fortress mode and the game is freaking out because there's not a fortress mode eligible civ? I dunno for sure.

Wakfu is an... about two year old, fairly tongue in cheek, and VERY pretty MMO with a turn based strategy vibe that's recently gone into a F2P model, made by Ankama games. (The french makers of dofus, a very similar game, and the prequel to this game). Some of you may remember an old thread and small community during the open beta. I've locked that thread, as nothing really big went down and all the super old posts would likely do nothing but get in the way of newer players.

If you've played dofus, the gist is a massive ogre by the name of ogrest finds the 5 dofus, dragon egg things that grant wishes, things happen, and he gets very sad, climbs to the top of a giant rock pillar and cries until the world is drowned in his tears. This series of events is referred to as ogrest's chaos, for the lore hounds out there.

Anyway it's a fairly basic Turn Based Strategy except you control one unit. You. As such the game is a lot more fun if you've got some people around to play it with.

The server the majority of people are going to be using is Nox. However, it's still fairly early on in these things, so this is up for debate. If you'd like to suggest a server movement, please post in the thread with your argument. "We should go to X server" is not an argument on it's own, for the record.

Let's get on to the classes!

A note! Every character in Wakfu uses skills/spells etc, despite this the stat system is a little wierd. It's simple enough, but before you make any statistical decisions, read the stat descriptions first, for the love of god. The short version is there are 4 elements, a stat corresponds to each element, generally you will be a "fire Iop" or an "earth Feca", etc.

CLASSES

This game has a LOT of classes. I'm only aware of some of them, as I played in open beta and there's obviously been two years of updates I am not up on. Please bear with me, I am probably incorrect in a lot of areas, but the general ideas should be accurate. I've spoilered them as they're taking up a lot of space. CRAFTING

ECOSYSTEM

You may be wondering what this is all about. You see, ogrest's chaos did a number on the ecosystem because, well, most animals can't live underwater. As a result, you can get seeds from animals and plants and replant them. Similarly if enough are killed, seeds are required to repopulate them. Killing too many is considered a crime, and will make it possible for bounty hunters to bring you down. Extinction is possible but not likely, due to the ease of getting seeds, but it definitely provides a wrinkle.

NATIONS

There are four nations. They are lead by the players, and they are all democracies. Government will typically post notices, wars can break out, etcetera. I'll give a (very) brief rundown of them, because this post is long enough as is. As a free player you cannot give your opinion on the governer, but nobody ever did that to begin with. Each nation has a crafting focus, but if you hate one area's theme  it's still possible to pull off a different crafting skill in a non "synergized" area.

Brakmar

Fire and brimstone and metal. There's a mine called sweet childoormine. Lots of mining nodes.

Suifokia
 
Has a seaside fishing port kinda feel and look. Focused on fishing. Lots of fish nodes.

Bonta

Woodsy area, naturey, that sorta thing. Focused on treecutting. Lotta trees.

Amakna

I really know very little about this. Based around a general like, "castle town" sorta thing? Focused on farming/butchery.

After all this you may be wondering, what are the F2P penalties. I'm unsure specifically, but most of the game is available from what I've heard. All I've seen is you can't vote for your governer, it's possible all of the politics are locked out, but I'm unsure of that.

DF Gameplay Questions / My d key is busted.

Okay, here's the thing. My d key is busted (I'm copy pasting them). d Is unfortunately rather vital in dF, so yeah. does anyone happen to know of a list of all of the commands in dF? Or at least any that use d.

Similarly are control bindings anywhere in an editable file so I can save this binding setup/edit it out of game, or will I have to redo it whenever a new update comes out (Not often, but it pays to be prepared)?

Alternately if anybody inexplicibly knows of a way to play the game without using d OR remapping it, that's also acceptable. Although I feel like that's a long shot.

What is this?

Some of you may remember the gingiva topic I made a little while back. Middens is the (mostly) spiritual prequel to Gingiva. So, in other words, it's an exploration game, ala Yume Nikki, .flow, that sort've thing, with a combat element. And another gimmick. Namely every single NPC in the game can be killed or attacked. With consequences in some cases, if you kill a save point man, you can't save there anymore, if you kill a bus driver you can't use any features relating to the bus anymore. Some will just die upon being shot, some will actively fight you after being shot. Similarly these NPCs have dialogue, directly taken from the last words of convicted criminals in many cases. Many of these NPCs are referred to as figments of the rift, and do not exist in the literal sense. I think. The game is a little opaque to say the least.

But naturally, there's a gimmick. In this case your weapon and traveling companion is a sentient gun by the name of genie. You see, you are traveling through dangerous metaphorical waters. The Rift. An enormous void in space that is slowly consuming the worlds around it. And genie, while not a native, is something of an expert on the rift, or so they say. Their preferred method, them being a gun, is naturally to shoot first and ask questions later. But it's ultimately your decision to make on whether or not to kill things. And it is my firm belief that the game is best played entirely spontaneously, so I will give no advice on the matter. It's very difficult to mess up permanently as long as you use common sense. There are two endings, I believe, one that is very easy to get that you will no doubt stumble on eventually, and another that I have litterally no leads on and continue to search for. Maybe you'll find it before me! Who can say. I would ask that you spoiler tag the method to find the true ending if you know it, as I know at least a single B12er has played middens, at the very least.

In any case, let's be perfectly honest, the rift is much larger then you are, and likely there is nothing that can be done to stop it. So have a time in there, give things some thought, and see what you can find. Maybe you'll find a way out of that hole.

Phantasy star online! There are almost certainly plenty of people that remember that game. The hunt for red boxes and timing based combos has, indeed, made a return. But, before I get into describing this, I'd just like to say, the game is only released in japan. As a result it's fairly anime! Recent events have made it fairly obvious they will not be releasing this game in america. However! It's possible, and endorsed by sega, for american players to play on the japanese servers. There's no IP block, and the connection is actually pretty good! Similarly there's a ship that english players have more or less made their home (ship 02), japanese players have more or less adjusted to the influx of english players, and on top of all of this, the playerbase has basically translated most of the game for us. It's a pretty sweet deal! If this sounds acceptable to you, then please carry on.

Phantasy star online 2 is, in all respects, a direct upgrade to PSO. Combat has been improved, it's a bit more monster hunter-ey now, loot is instanced, no more wrestling over those red boxes, any race and gender can be any class, you can switch classes, you can subclass, skill trees are mostly passives/buffs, offensive skills drop from monsters, it has it all. Read on for more specific information!

Please note patching will litterally take days, even on the best connections. The game's been out for 2 years and it looks pretty good, so it takes a while to get up to speed. The PSO2 tweaker available on that website will both translate the game for you and provides a better patching alternative (Click the orb, find the option that says check for PSO2 updates, let it finish over the course of days, install the patches through that orb, you're good). PSO2 tweaker will resume downloads from the point they were at before disconnect/crash/cancel. Official patcher will not! Use PSO2 tweaker or you will cry salty tears constantly.

Creative Projects / An attempt at a decent turn based combat system.

So! I'm making a game. (With RPG maker VX ace, to get that out of the way.) Partially because I saw a lot of games (that I love), like OFF, Gingiva, Middens, that were RPG maker games with terrible combat but actually pretty great plot. I've always thought JRPG combat had a ton of potential that very few people actually took advantage of, so I aim to do the opposite.

A JRPG with a focus on combat rather then plot, visuals, or exploration. I'm taking a lot of inspiration (rather on accident, it just sorta turned up this way) from the etrian odyssey series, and to a lesser extent shin megami tensei. The current setup is a single town, with a single dungeon, 12 floors, as this is my first attempt at game design and I'd rather make it quick and easy to understand why and where I fucked up if I do. Notably, the "gimmick" I've had in my head is something similar to elemental weaknesses.

Namely, something I've dubbed elemental "curtains". Only the enemy has access to them, and what they do is raise the elemental strength of spells of that element for the user (maybe globally, actually!), but also make the target weaker to that element. Enemies will NEVER use curtains randomly, they're almost a "fight condition". Theoretically, this system will lead to decisions being made based around the curtains, and allowing buffs and nerfs to have a greater impact on a fight. I've got no issues with altering or even scrapping this entirely if I think up something better (or a better idea is introduced to me).

I'm still working on mapping, but shortly after that I'll probably dip into combat. Afterwords, art, music, and the (rather barebones) plot will be implimented.

At this time, I actually don't have a lot to show off! That'll likely occur when I get into music/art. I don't forsee the art being particularly good, but I have hopes for music being at least passable.

So yeah! Still in very preliminary stages, but I figured I'd make a post. I'll likely keep this updated with screenshots of progress/thoughts I've been having on the matter..

WHAT'S ALL THIS ABOUT THEN
Gingiva is a surreal RPG and spiritual successor to Middens (they take place in the same world, but you can play this game without having played Middens), not unlike OFF (although it certainly ranks higher on the "what the hell is happening" scale), wherein a woman with a turnkey for a head is imprisoned for creating faulty goods. Whereupon a pair of chattering teeth named Gingiva chews through the wall (they live in them, as I'm sure you're aware), freeing her and setting them off on their journey through a harsh, mostly uncaring landscape.

Much like OFF, the primary appeal is in the aesthetics and storytelling. Don't go to this for an amazing gameplay experience; you will be dissapointed.

WHERE DO I GET IT THEN
First off! THIS IS IMPORTANT. This game has a large amount of... colors. If you are epileptic, you may want to avoid this one. Nothing seems terribly flashy, but I also don't have epilepsy, so I can't really say precisely how bad it'd be. You might look up some screenshots, and keep in mind, if there's a wide variety of colors and shapes, they're probably moving and flashing different colors. As ya do.

VIDEO GAME CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING aka VGCW, aka TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT, is a popular twitch show by Bazza87 aka Bazza McMahon where video game characters from varying franchises and backgrounds get into a wrestling ring and beat the hell out of each other, via the custom wrestler feature present in the WWE games. There's also plot. The plot is... basically middling grade crossover fanfiction, so basically in line with most wrestling plots, but similarly to most wrestling plots, it is oddly compelling.

Then again many people don't need a lot of motivation to watch Ganondorf beat the hell out of Zangief. Twitch chat is around, playing the role of the screaming crowd, something they do exceedingly well. Expect basically everything you expect from twitch chat traditionally. It airs every tuesday, and the woman's VGCW league, WVGCW, airs on.... thursdays? Maybe fridays. I don't keep up with it. It's on the same channel.

I'm not going to bother with any further explanation because by this point you are either all in and looking for links or think I'm a crazy person.

PARTICULARLY NOTABLE MATCHES!

Billy and Jimmy's introduction match, featuring such wonders as double hot tag, double rage, one of vegeta's few spectacular rage showoffs. Seriously, dude goes nuts. 19 minutes, going on 20.

Bowser Vs Protoman. Protomon has historically been one of the worse wrestlers, when he's not inexplicibly glitching the hell out of the game, including hovering a foot above the announcer table and phasing through the walls of the ring for no reason. Bowser is a powerhouse and a rather high end candidate for the strongest wrestler in the league. LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS! 10 minutes, going on 11. Will feel like much longer depending on who you root for.

DF Modding / World gen crashing regularly.

So! I've just started testing a recent version of my mod. I've added quite a bit of STUFF since I last tested, so I unfortunately don't know exactly what could be setting it off. One thing that comes to mind is I have several plants used for "middling" steps in plant processing that do not spawn in the world, nor have seeds, nor have anything but a structural mat, and maybe an alcohol/milling/extract mat. But it seems to be crashing shortly after civilization generation, in the first few years of the world history, so I don't think it'd be the plants.

Are there any common causes of world gen crashes? I doubt it's taking up too much memory, there really isn't enough to the mod for that to happen yet I'd think. The error log is completely empty.

So uhh, yeah. Any common causes of world gen crashes? Or should I start systematically removing what I added and see what's setting it off? :P 

EDIT: Naturally it works on the fourth try without a hitch. It still seems to be giving me trouble most of the time though.
