You are a hacker, like your mother before you. You, like your mother before you, do hacker stuff. You’ve found friends whom also do hacker stuff. You and your friends made, like, an ultra cool private hacker zone where you can all do hacker stuff in peace, away from those less cool hackers whom do hacker stuff with less flare and pizzazz and also happen to be rivals of yours, which has nothing to do with said less flare and pizzazz.

Anyway, you’ve just learned that your noticeably less cool rivals have also made a super-secret hacker clubhouse of their own, and are planning on declaring war on you, taking over the internet, tracing your friends back to your hacker zone, and breaking in and taking it over.

And then never letting you forget that they’re officially better then you.

You can’t have that, right? No, it’s time to roll up your gloves, put your army boots on, and show them who’s top hacker in da internets.

Or else you’ll have to flee in shame and change your internet name until everyone forgets about this in the next year or so, which it totally forever.

So, it’s time to go to war. Or almost time at least. There’s going to be three turns as both sides posture at and insult each other as they work up to this, three turns to do designs and revisions so you have some hacker pride and possess more then the bog standard baby programs all hackers worth their name have and even some non-hackers have.

More importantly, there’s going to be three contests you have to do. Here’s the first.

Starting Contest : Who The Hell Do They Think You Are?

Actually, no, who are you? You can’t just keep calling yourself Hacker Group Side A forever, and you’ve assuredly got some cool history or legacy, right?

For this contest, you need to write up who you and your hacker friends are and what cool name you all decided to name yourself in between arguments on if 11:45PM brain or 1:45PM brain is best brain at midnight.

You have until the start of Turn -B to finish this contest. The winning submission will be copied to the core thread.

Begin Design Phase -C

Welcome, friends, to the internet, that wholesome place of education and sharing knowledge for the good of all. Of community building and friendship across the boundaries of geography, of personal growth and- ok, look. You’re all hackers. You’re friends with other hackers, and enemies with different other hackers. Recently you got together with your friends and built a zone all to your own, where you can do, idduno, hacker stuff in peace and privacy. However you just learned that your rival hackers just did the same thing, and you can’t have that. No, in the name of hackerness and bragging rights, there can be only one top hacker group on this internet.

And that group better be yours.

Time to get together with your friends, your friends’ friends, and your friends’ viruses, and your friends’ friends viruses, as well as with your own viruses and get to winning this war.

After all, if they beat you they’ll never let you forget it. In preemptive vengeance for that, you need to beat them and never let them forget it.

So as people probably are realizing right now, this is an arms race in the style of Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Megaman Battle Network, Megaman Star Force, Code Lyoko, and other generalized cyberspace verses where the best remedy for your computer being infested with a virus is a large hammer and the willingness to use it on some program’s face equivalent.

Fight for the right to ‘ownz’ the internet in all its myriad clusters, seek control over the zones to trace down where your enemy has made their home, and then bring the battle to them to once and for all show everyone whom the best hackers are.

Just watch out for the Data Police as you do it.

Welcome brave engineers to Titan, land of ritual combat, robot vehicles, and utterly huge piloted Mecha. Here, for whatever reason, your side and the enemy will duke things out in ways that don’t lead to dead planets, in ancient honorable combat. And Drill Punching, probably, but that’s honorable right?

Still, combat has not yet started. As is traditional, each side has a certain amount of time to work up before the giant robots start pummeling each other. As is also traditional, neither side gets to import anything, materials or designs. Each side starts fresh, here in the Arena born from the Moon Titan, where Titans rule the battlefield. Only the best side will win, the side with the bravest pilots, the most cunning planners, the more deranged and brilliant designers.

And even though combat has not yet started, your side already plots a path to final victory. And bragging rights. Those are important too. As combat has not started yet, you find yourself with additional time and spare resources with which to do design actions. This allows you to do two design actions, instead of one, for each turn until combat starts.

As well, there’s another important question that needs to be answered. Who are you, anyway? What side do you champion? The spectators want to know. As such, throughout the first turn, you’ll be given the chance to write fluff about your side and why it fights, before voting for which set of fluff, and which side name, is correct at the end of the revision phase.

For as long as living memory holds, the Inklings and the Octolings have been at peace with one another. Well, at least as much as they've been at peace with themselves. Sometimes Lings didn't like each other, considered each other unfresh, but there was always plenty of room to go find your own place, away from anyone whom made you want to strangle them.

This is now changing, though most are of yet unaware of it.

For, unnoticed and unwarned of, the sea has begin to rise. Why? No one knows. Perhaps the ice caps are finally recovering from the ancient war so long ago. Perhaps it is some evil Salmonid experiment, hidden beneath the deep blue sea. Perhaps the sun is shining unkindly upon this world... or perhaps it is something that is just happening, and the reason why really doesn't matter.

Because what matters, is that the great island is shrinking, one shoreline at a time. The lowlands soon will become unlivable wetlands, farmlands will flood, rivers overflow their banks, and only the highlands will remain habitable.

And there isn't going to be enough highlands for everyone. Most Lings do not yet believe things will get bad. Most Lings, Inkling or Octoling, are not even aware of the rising waters as of yet. But some Lings, Octoling or Inkling, can see what is coming, the nightmare slouching slowly but surely towards both races.

Some lings are preparing for what will someday be known as... the Great Turf War.

Now, in this coming time of strife, betrayal, war, and sorrow, only one thing can be known for certain. There will be Ink.

As should be fairly obvious to most people, The Great Turf War Arms Race is, in fact, a Splatoon themed Arms Race. Players will join either the Octolings or the Inklings in the war to settle the future of the island they call home, and Inkopolis itself.

However, unlike most arms races, and as many might expect from a Splatoon themed game, this is not a war fought with bullets, flameguns, poison gas, shrapnel grenades, high explosive bombs, and all those other arms race staples. Instead, this is a war fought with Ink! After all, this is a Turf War, and anyone who's played Splatoon, or even had a sibling talk excitedly about it for a few minutes in their presence, should know what that means.

It means you have to paint the world your own color, that's what. Oh, and maybe Ink up all your enemies while you're at it to keep them from interfering. These are not, however, the Turf Wars players are familiar with. For one thing, there's a lot more then four fighters a team deployed to these battles, and for another... Well, this is set 100 years before Splatoon. Technology has marched on since the Great Turf War, and you're all on the wrong side of that march. At least to start with. The Great Turf war wasn't begin with all the fancy weaponry people see on their TVs, all those cool specials and effective subweapons.

Here, at the dawn of the Great Turf War, the first Ink-Tech weapon has just been invented. It is an innovation that will change the world in the future. It's called the Bamboozler. No, not the Bamboozler 14 Mk insert number here... just the Bamboozler. The Bamboozler 1, if you want to put it that way. It is the first step into a larger world, but it is not a step great enough to achieve victory. Not when the other side has it too.

Your job, as brave Octoling or Inkling engineers, is to advance the frontier of Ink-Technology, find and recruit heroes, construct devastating superweapons, and otherwise lead your side to the ultimate victory of being able to stay up on the surface, instead of being forced down into the underdark below.

So no pressure, eh?

Welcome, brave engineers, to Octo Valley, the ancient center of Octoling Civilization. Strange tidings arise on the tides, tidings of war and woe, for all that most do not yet hear them. You, on the other hand, do hear them. The long peace between Inkling and Octoling will soon break into pieces, it seems, under the pressure of the rising waves. One side will break, and be forced from the highlands that will be left. You and your peers mean for it to not be your side that is forced from your home by desperate refugees, and you will turn all your artifice into preventing that terrible vision from coming true.

Still, the war is not yet upon us. Even the most grim souls think it still a matter of months, not days, until the public realizes what stands before them and the fighting starts. You have some time yet. Time to spend crafting better tools, better implements of victory for your side before the need becomes a demand for salvation.

Let us use it wisely, eh?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / [SG] War for Orbit [Year: 1942]
« on: October 15, 2014, 01:59:21 am »
This game takes place in fictional Universe, almost entirely, but not quite, unlike ours. The year is 1942, and the second world war rages. The German obsession with rocketry, long quietly mocked by other nations, has proven its worth beyond its founders wildest dreams. Rocket powered Komet fighters have proven devastating to RAF bombing raids, and the British Isles have been terrorized since the war begin by Flying Bombs.

The US Army's long dismissal of the military potential of the German rocket programs is proving dire and costly... and then the first German Atmospheric Skip Bomber struck Washington itself.

Luckily for Army High Command, one member had seen the threat, and had long been funding the Roswell Project, headed by Goddard, mainly through skimming the money off other, more popular projects. With the sudden and repeated proof of the dangers of German Rocketry, the Project was quickly used as the core for a new military service. The US Army Space Corps.

While the Roswell Project had managed to successfully make several manned launches, they lacked any space adapted weapons, space combat adapted designs, or even pilots trained for zero gravity combat. Still, this was more then anyone else who wasn't German had.

Today is the first day of your new job, as the unlucky person put in charge of the Space Corps, and expected to lead them into, at the very least, preventing the Germans from continuing to drop high powered bombs onto American soil.

Designer notes:
I will be using plenty of abstractions and best guesses. So when giving details, please say what's special about them.

I will occasionally come in with demands from the government and military to develop a general/specific type of thing. You are otherwise permitted to design any kind of hardware you like. Note that the more outlandish technologies you propose may be impossible, have severe drawbacks, or take far more resources than you have to develop. Even for entirely reasonable projects, there will be some element of chance where what you want to produce will end up costing more or less than you anticipated, or what you get may not exactly match your proposed design.

Design of new ships is a large project, design of new large weaponry is a medium project, and modifications of either and small weaponry design are a small project.

Rules
1. All proposals must be bolded
2. All proposals must have an unique number
-In case of accidental duplication, please split in 6a and 6b, or add one to the end of the queue. Don't move up everything else. That causes confusion
3. All proposals must be marked as a Large, Medium or Small project.
4. Design proposals begin at 1, for each year
-Proposals continued from last year will be placed in italics, and include the year before the number. (Only do this for proposals that were worked upon).
5. Production proposals begin at A, for each year.
6. Other proposals, like reorganization of the team or political war plan suggestions will be marked using the Greek alphabet
7. Proposals and Votes are unlimited. Please don't abuse this.
8. Each proposal that doesn't follow these rules will be terminated with extreme prejudice.
Example: 1. I propose we mount lasers on space sharks
1943:1 Seeing as the project wasn't finished last year due to a shark shortage, I propose we continue with mutated Orbital Bass

1: All rules for proposals apply except the following.
2: Modifications to proposals will have a number in the format of proposal.sub-proposal.
3: A modification may be supportive (default) or a counter (must be explicit).
4: You can vote for a Proposal and it's supportive subproposal, but not for a proposal and it's counter subproposal.
1.1 I think we should go all the way and mount the National Ignition Facility on the head of a sharkasourus.
1.2 I counter propose that we should instead create lasers that shoot beams composed of sharks.

Format for votes
1: you must specify the proposal number explicitly.
2: you must use the word vote.
3: Each user should make all of their votes with one post if possible
4. You should edit in your vote into the proposal tracker (template below). Always use the latest quoted example.

Some people may remember this game, which was put on hold because I needed to work out some rules, and more importantly because I was about to go into surgery and therefor couldn't run it anymore.

While I originally meant to just continue on from where I stopped, as I got into remaking how things actually worked and such, things required more and more glossing over to explain how a modern earth could end up with one advanced spaceship under UN control with very little support behind it, and generally, I don't like doing glossing over and plot holes. As such, I decided to reboot it. So here have the second try of.. The Dawn of The Space Age!

In this timeline, you are starting after the cold war.. went hot. Fortunately, it was a limited hot, but the short exchange of highly explosive ballistic missiles and armies between the west and the soviets had... side effects on the worlds climate. As such, the majority of the worlds efforts is currently being focused on rebuilding, leaving little money or interest in the space programs. This is about the time the Relic was found crashed into the dark side of the moon. The alien spacecraft ignited interest in space once again! Or at least until people spent a year researching it without learning much more then how to open the doors and turn the power on.

As time went by, the world stayed in need of repairs, and not much progress that was newsworthy was reported... people stopped caring. And as people stopped caring... this left the space programs with much lower budgets then they needed to be able to do anything. This left them open to a surprising and risky offer... An offer by a private foundation to buy the now more repaired and they think they mostly know how it works maybe sorta spaceship from the ailing space programs. An offer.. that was accepted.

You are Alexander Namic, the new owner of the only human run spaceship, an ancient relic armed with a pair of powerful missile launchers and what people think is a point defense laser, as well as what would be a very good sensor array if you knew how to use it. You've given its empty landing bay a pair of heavy cargo lifters and you have found the 65 or so people needed to actually crew the thing, and are currently fully fueled and in earth orbit. After a popular vote, the ship was named the Revolution.

This still leaves a few questions, however... What is your foundation called? And more importantly, what are you going to do? And finally, What do you request the labs research while you are gone? Now that the scientists aren't focusing all their efforts into getting the ship running, they have some new ideas...

It is estimated that traveling between each orbital ring will take between one to two days, as the suns gravity well keeps you from turning on what you think is the ftl drive, not that you can figure out how that works yet.

C : Laser Weapon Theory, Studies of the Relic's point defense laser has given people some ideas on how to make their own laser weapons.
D : Prefab Space Station, the study of ways to fit a full, if small, space station into your cargo hold.
E : Colony Study, the planning of interstellar colonies, but experts say they will need more information on other planets and potential colony sites to begin this.

The year is 20XX, in the land of Science Fiction Earth. Under the aegis of the United Nations Space Agency, humanity has produced there first major spacecraft. It's Captain? You. Time to take command and take charge of humanities first steps into a greater world.

First, however, I need a few things from you.

What is the ship called?

What is your name?

And what was the first ship?
Did people use the design from North America? The fastest of the lot, armed with twin nuclear torpedo launchers and a point defense laser, and equipped with an extra powerful sensor array, but suffering from a small strategic range?

Did people use the design from Asia? The most armored of the lot, armed with three double laser turrets, and with the largest cargo hold, but suffering from the slowest speed?

Did people use the design from Europe? The most self sufficient of the lot, with the greatest strategic range? Armed with a powerful spinal laser, a rear facing torpedo launcher, and equipped with an experimental magnetic scoop to collect more fuel from gas giants?

Did people use the design from Russia? The cheapest of the lot, and the smallest, armed only with a single laser turret, but really really easy to build? (Hard mode).
