DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Clothes, wear, garbage

Help me make sense of this.

This is what I understand from reading:

- Dwarves will wear clothes
- Clothes will "wear" out over time.
- Enough wear and dwarves will replace their clothes and discard the tattered ones on the refuse pile.
- Clothes on the refuse pile will be disowned and rot away.

Here's where my brain explodes. If I force the "disowning" through DFHack (cleanowned all X), my dwarves will not dump their worn clothing on the refuse pile, they will not dump it in the garbage, but instead they'll drop all their clothes in the finished goods stockpile. Is that really supposed to happen?

And what is supposed to happen when a dwarf disposes of worn clothing? Is he supposed to drop it in the finished goods pile, or the refuse pile?

DF Modding / NO migrants

So as I've understood from searching, the first two waves of migrants are largely "hard coded" to always arrive regardless of circumstances. But if I set my population cap to 0, would that mean that after that initial two waves, I'd get no more migrants, ever? Only fort increases would come from children alone, right?

DF Modding / Epic noob modder - Crop seasons

I find the mere notion that underground crops have seasons and above ground crops do not insane. Is there some way for me to change this "easily" (like RAW editing) and does this affect a game in progress or do I have to gen a new world?

On the same page: I want to edit the whips so they aren't lightsabers, where do I find the weapon "stats" in the raws?


I've searched the first three pages of my search results, but not found my answers. I suck at searching, clearly. Halp?

DF Gameplay Questions / Did the logging of dead dwarves change?

I'm not sure if I'm going insane of something really did change in the last version.

Previously when a dwarf died, regardless of how he died, I'd get a message saying he'd bled to death, been crushed or struck down. Now it seems that if a dwarf dies and there's no other dwarf there to witness it, I won't get a report until that dwarf is physically found by other dwarves.

Was it always like this and I have just missed it, or was this a new, unmentioned, feature of the whole vampirism bathingabob? Or am I just a terrible reader? :P

Quite often, especially when I want to enclose something on the left side, I've noticed that dwarves, without fail, will step through and build from the left, causing them to get sealed inside.

Any convenient ways around this?

I have constructed several blocks (some 100 I think) and have a dedicated block stockpile (metal not allowed, as well as the "normal" block types, such as coke and potash). But in spite of this, the blocks just keep piling up in my masonry workshop, while the three rock grates he just made were happily hauled off to the furniture stockpile.

What gives? Is the block stockpile broken for 31.16?



Bloody board magic -.- All of a sudden all the dwarves decided "Hey gais! Let's haul the blocks now, k?" So yeah, it still works.

So I thought "Hey cool, volcano!" *embark*

Slight problems ensued.

No wood for beds. DOH!
No water for irrigation. Fine, I can do with shrubs.
Barren region, no shrubs or trees. DOH!

How is it even possible to survive on such an embark. Caverns?

So yeah, of course it matters. My question is, if you want to play fortress (dwarf) mode, does the size of the world affect FPS or simspeed in any way? I think it might affect what civs and monsters are around, but does it actually directly affect my game? Like embark square size?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / *SPOILERS* HFS weak?

So I dug down to find magma and also found adamantite. I've never really found much adamantite and wasn't sure just how HFS works. Naturally I broke the spire and lo and behold, screams and eerie caverns.

My military was comprised of 7 legendary fighter/swordsdwarves, 1 legendary lasher and 1 legendary speardwarf. Lasher and Speardwarf were armed with silver, the swordsdwarves a mix of copper and iron (no time to forge any weapons due to me having no fuel until magma).

About 15 assorted demons make it up through the spire and completely obliterate my forges, then move on to face my military, which I stationed in a storage room one floor up. Then the demons proceed to get hilariously slaughtered by my COPPER armed swordsdwarves. Only one injured with a fatal wound (red) to a leg. Nothing more. 15 dead demons.

Do they get progressively more badass or was I just lucky? Because this certainly felt a bit...weak.

DF Modding / Making Ironhand and Civ Forge Graphic work nicely together

So, I'm a complete and utter noob. How do I make these two play together? I simply installed Civ Forge and it's graphic set over Ironhand and that led to some rather hilarious things...not. Weaponstands instead of trees anyone?

How do I do this properly? ANd can it be done?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Embark size, computer power and RAM

Hi there! I'm wondering if anyone knows the intricacies of embark size. I've played everything from 6x6 to 3x3 and it honestly don't seem to make much of a difference. Are larger embark sizes (5+) doomed to kill your computer later, or is it for computers that are a bit "weaker"? In my 3x3 fort I'm currently down to about 20 FPS during regular operation, and that's with barely 100 dwarves...

Computer
Intel i7 @2.66 GHz
6 Gb Hi-Speed RAM
Win 7 x64

Graphic card irrelevant, I think but it's a GeForce 275 GTX.

Yeah, so I see this on embark in the "Find site" and I see it being talked about here and there, even on the wiki. But nowhere does it explain what drainage is or what it does. (English is not my first language, so if it's darn obvious, forgive my linguistic ignorance)

DF Gameplay Questions / Prepeared meals - What stockpile option?

Say I want to have one stockpile, near my still and kitchen, for "unprepared" food only. Say fishies, plants and meat. I also want another stockpile near my dining area with only prepared food and booze.

What stockpile option allows me to do that? (Custom stockpile, that is). I haven't found "prepared food" in the list...only every single meal type, which is a pretty long list.

DF Gameplay Questions / Limiting migrant amounts

I seem to be getting anything from 4-25 migrants every now and then, and honestly, I feel my fortress is growing just a tad bit too fast. Is there any setting/file/raw I can modify to limit migrants to say...10 tops?
