DF Gameplay Questions / Lavish Catacombs and Nobles
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:46:41 pm »
Since (to put it in the most nerdy way possible) I like to consider my dwarves to be Lawful Good, I decided that my next challenge would reflect this and I shall make a well developed catacombs system. A typical adult unmarried dwarf will have the following tomb as their final resting place:

=======
=SXXXS=
=XXXXX=
=PXCXX=
=XXXXX=
=SXXXS=
===D===

= - Walls, all of which will be engraved by a master-level Engraver
X - The floor, which will also be engraved in a similar fashion.
S - Statues, one in each corner. They will be made out of the dwarf's favourite stones, metals and other materials.
D - The door. I haven't decided yet if this will also be made out of a favourite metal/stone/material or if I should make it more sombre.
C - The coffin (or memorial should the body be unrecoverable), made out of the dwarf's favourite stone.
P - The resting place of the dwarf's pet, again made out of the dwarf's favourite stone.

Obviously this is flexible - married couples will have a tomb one tile wider with their coffins side by side, and should entire families die before the children grow up, then they too shall rest together in a slightly larger tomb. Similarly, nobles or dwarves who have done great acts will get even larger tombs.

This brings me to my problem. Will nobles be unhappy with the fact that every dwarf in the fortress is entitled to an entire tomb of their own, and will it become an issue in the future?

DF Gameplay Questions / Legends Mode
« on: April 25, 2011, 12:37:56 pm »
This is my second thread today, sorry...  ::)

I have a couple of questions to ask about this mode anyways:

1. After looking at a dwarf civilization, it says that the latest monarch, in this case the queen, was crowned in 501. The year is now 1050, and there are no further updates from this civilization after 501. Does this mean the civ is destroyed, or nothing has happened, or I have a queen in my world who is 549 years old? I've seen other civilizations where the log just ends at an early year before 1050. The civilization is also still on the map in the year 1050 on the Historical Maps section... really confused over this.

2. On the map, when a territory is flashing with the emblems of two or more nations, what does this mean?

3. Finally, what does it mean when a territory that visually looks like it belongs to one nation has two nations listed when I hover over it?

In my previous world I noticed that there were a lot of goblin fortresses in the south, which in this case was the Freezing area. I counted at least 4 or 5 individual towers in tundras, usually on the shores of the frozen ocean. Not only this, but there were several Evil biomes in this area as well. I put this down to coincidence and thought nothing of it.

Just yesterday I created a new world, this time where the north was the Freezing area. Again, the freezing biomes had quite a few goblin towers (I counted 3 this time) and I kid you not, ALL BUT TWO of the evil biomes were in this area, and neither of the exceptions were large. An evil blizzard, tundra, and swamp - all located in the freezing north - are big enough to be shown on the World map and there are countless smaller ones nearby. In contrast, most of the good biomes are in Temperate to Hot climates.

Whilst I think it's pretty cool to imagine the races of the world speaking of the evil North in hushed tones, I'm still perplexed by it. Is it just another coincidence, or do Evil biomes and goblins naturally tend towards appearing in colder climates?

DF Gameplay Questions / Creating a Tigerman Community
« on: March 12, 2011, 09:03:05 am »
I was intrigued about Tigermen the moment I heard that they could be 'civilized' and live in your fortress alongside dwarfkind, so I've been hoping for an Elven caravan with one of them for some time now. However, I heard that they don't drink booze and refuse to drink out of wells, and only eat meat as well. What would you guys say is the best way to keep a Tigerman healthy and alive in your fortress?

Also, if possible;

1. Is there an easier way to get them apart from the Elves?
2. How often do they appear for sale?
3. How hard is it to get a community of them going?
4. Are there any other races that you can civilize in the same way?
5. I have Dwarven Bathtubs throughout my fortress, will they interfere with them in any way (Try to drink from them and lower the water level/get infected, etc..)

Thanks, sorry if I'm sounding a bit nooby here.

DF Gameplay Questions / Help using add-ons
« on: October 31, 2010, 03:14:51 pm »
Hi, I've recently become interested in playing Dwarf Fortress, so I asked around and people told me that I should use Mayday's tileset and Dwarf Therapist. So I've downloaded the latest Dwarf Fortress, then I went to http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php and downloaded the latest version of tileset, but since then I've become confused with what to do.

In the folder for the tileset, there seems to be a Dwarf Fortress client like the one I have, but it uses the tileset and has no sound. What's that there for? Then, I went on the Mayday website's DIY section and tried to put the tileset into the original game client, but it didn't work. What do I have to do? Also, how do I put the Therapist into the game afterwards, and what's a reliable source I can download it from?

Sorry if it's a nooby question...
