DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I declare war on the Goblins?
« on: September 05, 2017, 03:01:24 am »
I'm at a great embark so far. I have no aquifer, lots of iron, and plenty of soil and sand. The only problem is that there isn't enough war going on right now to fill my corpse stockpiles.

I'm neighboring civilizations with Goblins, Elves, and Humans, but the only war right now is between the Goblins and Elves.

There have been irregular Kobold thievery attempts, but only one Goblin snatcher attempt. I don't know how I can declare war on them...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Giant Sparrow Feathers
« on: September 15, 2012, 12:18:28 am »
So, I've killed a couple of Giant Sparrows, and I have some feathers. There's nothing in the wiki about them. What can I do with them?

I'd normally ask this in the Little Questions Thread, but I can't seem to find it.   :-\

General Discussion / Thank you, Bay12Forums!
« on: January 01, 2012, 01:12:47 pm »
Just recently, I was reminded how much I take the bay12 forums for granted. I'm in the beginnings of what seems to be a crappy conversation, and I'm considering dropping the whole thing and ignoring the steam users forum for as long as I can.

So far, everyone here is always very polite, well-spoken, and understands basic grammar and spelling. This forum is, in my experience, devoid of the frustrating habits I see on some other forums, like saying terrible Grammer [sic] and spelling are not Unreadable [sic] Inless [sic] there is an eye condition, or the reader lacks the patience to read an intelligent argeument [sic]. I can't overstate how much more coherent these forums generally are.

This is just a reverse-rant about my pet peeves, but I wanted to take the opportunity to gush about how much I like these forums.

You're all awesome, Bay12 Forums, don't ever change!  :D

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress in the Media
« on: August 10, 2011, 04:06:21 pm »
I noticed that there were several threads discussing individual articles in the mainstream media about Dwarf Fortress, but there were no central threads for stories and interviews. As far as I could find, at least.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done web searches for dwarf fortress to try to read all the various interviews and reviews on the net. This thread is meant to be a collection of links to make this kind of reading easier.

EDIT: I'll be ignoring this list and only updating pages on the wiki here

My expedition leader won't manage work orders anymore, the error message says that he needs an office. I've already given him an office, and it shows up on his noble's screen. Is this something that others have experienced?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you deal with clothes?
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:02:07 pm »
I was wondering how you handle clothes in your fortresses? In my past couple fortresses I've made clothes in the first two years or so, but they just end up cluttering up my armour stockpiles. Even though some of the dwarves have some pretty tattered clothing, they never think to dump their old stuff into the refuse stockpile and grab a new shirt / pair of socks.

I know I can go through the armour stockpiles line by line and only allow the protective kind of armour in them, but it seems that it would be more appropriate to have the clothing separated from the armour in the stocks screen. This would make it easier to find out if I have enough protective stuff to cover my military with. Or am I missing something here?

I've read about nudist fortresses before, but I'd rather find a way to have everyone at least protected from the elements.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military Set-Up
« on: March 20, 2011, 08:53:29 pm »
I was wondering how you guys set up your military barracks and stockpiles. What I've been doing is I have a large-ish room right next to the entrance with an armour stand or some other military piece of furniture. I set that single room as the area for storing equipment and training for all squads. I put my weapon / armour / ammo stockpiles in the room

For the marksdwarf squad, I usually try to set up an outdoor archery range with a big stockpile of bone bolts, and my good bolts in a stockpile up on the defense balcony.

I normally have one squad on guard duty per month, or for three months of the year, with the rest of the time spent in training. I try to have each squad spend more time training than guarding / patrolling.

Should I be doing anything different to get the best response time from my military? Like putting beds in their barracks, or using a separate barracks for each squad?

First thought: "Magma Crabs? wtf?"

Second thought: "How much Adamantine can I safely mine?"

Third thought: "Now to set up a magma smelting industry to get rid of all this useless gold and tin!"

How should I best accomplish this? The sea is around 150 z-levels under most of my fortress. I didn't dig very deep. I swear, next time I'll try to make a vertical cylinder fort. What are the respective pros and cons of making a big magma pump stack? Which method of using magma forges would you recommend?

What I'm doing now is I'm hollowing out a stockpile area for the metal and crafts, with the smelters on the level below to cut down on all the digging cancellation messages. I plan to set up a couple of beds and put a moderate-sized stockpile of both food and booze. Am I missing anything here, other than both my legendary blacksmiths who are currently in the hospital after a siege? I'm sure I've got an armourer and possibly a weaponsmith hanging around.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stealing from a caravan
« on: November 29, 2010, 10:52:14 am »
My fortress is in it's second or third year so far, and it's doing pretty well overall. I've got three squads of military dwarves that have 7,8, and 8 members. Other than a few pieces of metal armour, they're almost all using leather and bone armour. I've got several silver warhammers scattered in there, two speardwarves, some swordsdwarves, a couple of macedwarves, and even a dwarf who wanted to use a large dagger to round it all out.

I want to know whether I have enough military power to seize the goods from the next trade caravan that comes by(say, the elves). What are the possible consequences of doing this? I've heard that if the elves get ticked off at you, then they'll bring more interesting caged creatures, and I wouldn't mind having a few war tigers accompanying my squad leaders into a fight.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Assigning Military Equipment
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:36:57 pm »
I'm having a bit of a hard time assigning equipment to my military. When I first draft a migrant into a squad, he drops his silk socks (and possibly his shoes as well) on the ground immediately and goes to pick up his equipment. The socks are, as far as I can tell, just sitting at the edge of the map until some thief decides to steal them.

That was just a minor annoyance. The main difficulty I'm having is when I try to assign a uniform or weapon to a dwarf. I can't see if the weapon or armour I'm trying to assign is already being used by someone else. I only have so many weapons, and I don't have enough fuel to just overproduce them and hope the dorfs pick what I want them to. Is there a way to to check to see if a piece of equipment is owned without going through my stocks, or checking in each dwarf's inventory?

Just so this post isn't too short, I'll ask one more thing: I have them set to Leather armour because I don't have much in the way of local weapons-grade metal other than silver. If I set the squad leaders to use metal armour, then will they default to leather if they can't find the metal parts?
