DF Gameplay Questions / Quick mist question

If I have water fall through a grate, is mist generated?   Working on my first mist generator and I want to have water fall through 7 levels of floor grates, generating mist on each level.  Will this work?  Thank you in advance!

I've been playing for about a year, dozens of forts...  I've never run into this and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious because of lack of sleep.

Just started a fort minutes ago and began digging out areas.  Designated a bunch of trees to be chopped.  I have one dwarf with Woodcutting enabled.  He has "No Job".  I have one axe.  He will not cut!  I enabled Woodcutting of each other dwarf in turn and they merrily take the axe, cut down a tree, and I try the next one.  Except for the original dwarf, who simply ignores my instructions.  I though maybe he hated copper, which the axe is made of, but no such luck...  What am I missing?

Please smack me with some wisdom.

DF Gameplay Questions / FInding the world seed of a save file?

Basically I want to play this map:  http://youtu.be/ITCbQQRJadc

But it appears to have been started using an older version incompatible with the current version.  (I assume this because it does not show up when I try to load it from inside the game.)

What I want to know is this:  Is there a way to find out what the seed used to generate this world is?    I want to try to recreate this world with the latest version of DF.

DF Gameplay Questions / Undead !!FUN!!

So since the new update I've lost all 5 forts to undead.  They seem to rise like crazy even in non-evil biomes!  (last FUN was in "untamed wilderness")  Does anyone have a strategy to deal with all this undead horse hair and kitten zombies that make short work of a population?  I was thinking tons of traps at a bottleneck on the way to the corpse/refuse pile, but that seems like it would fail eventually since each dead creature eventually becomes a writhing mass of killer parts.  Besides, they seem to always get me before I even get good defenses up.  And if I loose so much as a rabbit or kill a troglodyte before I have a serious metal industry going, I'm toast.

I'm playing 34.02, but just heard 34.04 is out.  Maybe Toad has toned the undead down again?

DF General Discussion / Development question...? Fortress vs. Adventure

Please keep in mind I am NOT COMPLAINING.  This game is free and I've spent a gazillion hours playing it.  I'm simply curious.

I've been visiting the main DF page every now and then for the past several months and I can't help but notice that a lot of time is being spent on Adventure mode, expanding features and all kinds of stuff.  I've tried playing Adventure mode a few times and it seems way more confusing to me than Fortress mode, and pointless, so I don't really bother.  The fact that there are 6x more threads on this forum for Fortress mode than Adventure mode leads me to believe that most people feel the same.

So I was just wondering if anybody knows why on earth Tarn is hustling so hard on that mode, instead of streamlining the Fortress side.  Do you think he just enjoys it more?  Change of pace?  Again, I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why.  As far as I'm concerned Toady can do whatever the hell he wants.

DF Gameplay Questions / Butchering a Native Platinum Forgotten Beast?

It took some doing, but I brought the beast down the dwarven way.   Now my little dudes are hauling it up to the fort in three several-ton chunks...  I'm thinking that's a lot of platinum: the right hand alone weighs 3170...  I tried designating it to be melted on the [z]tocks screen, but no luck.  What will happen if I butcher it?  Anyone ever run into something like this?  Thanks for your input!

I'm trying to find out what my fortress is called in English..  I see the Dwarven name on the load screen, but is there a way in-game to see the English name for it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Bridge defense workaround?

Has anybody found a workaround or fix for the bridge-weight bug?  My fort is heavily reliant on bridge traps for defense, but these damn jabberers and cave crawlers weigh too much...

This seems to be a fairly major bug to still be around...   :-[

If there is no fix, how are you guys coping?

Is there a way to see if I have struck any Lapis Lazouli clusters, for instance, or lignite, etc.?  I'd like to be able to zero in on specific unmined materials.

DF Gameplay Questions / There are too many canaries in my coal mine.

So I get a lot of random suffocation deaths at my fort.  Usually its dogs and cats down near the first cavern.  I figured they're probably old age or something about animals going too far underground.

But just now a dwarf suffocated on the surface.  I'm almost positive he was uninjured, he immigrated about a minute and a half ago.  The guy had some nice spear skill he was gonna teach to my idiot brigade.  So now I actually care WTF is happening with all the oxygen deficiency going on here...  Do dwarves die of old age?  Is there a way I can get more info on what happened?

So I just got my first offer to promote a Baron and become a Colony...

I read on the wiki that these guys are a pain in the ass, but "serve vital managerial roles".  The wiki makes no further comment on the benefits of nobility.  What exactly can becoming a colony do for me?

Some of my floodgates are not visible.  Or should I say they appear as solid black tiles.

I know they are there because I can loo[k] at them, and I know they are closed because they're holding back 7/7 water...

I can see some but not others, seemingly at random.

Is this supposed to be this way?  Searched the bug forum, found no references

DF Gameplay Questions / Cluttered Still

My stills are very cluttered.  There is a stockpile nearby with only Drink (Plant) and Barrels enabled.  The dorfs are storing empty barrels there just fine, but not the booze.  What am I doing wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Automation?

Is there a better way than the Manager screen to queue production?  I can only add 30 of something at a time.  Granted I can type it in over and over, but is there a way to permanently repeat production when the components are available?  I know you can do it at individual workshops, but they cancel the order when they have no access to components...

A place where I could order "Automatically cut all rough gems" or "Automatically make coke from lignite & coal" would be awesome...  I feel like most of my time is spent micromanaging at this point.

Am I missing something?  Thanks!
