DF Modding / Map making help...

Okay, so I started making a custom map using Photoshop to make a bitmap and there has to be a way to make a bmp into a DF map.. but trying to use the DF map compressor  http://mkv25.net/dfma/ isn't working for some reason... 

Anyone have any tips for a newb?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Shopkeepers?

Just getting back into DF, I thought I'd try my hand at adventuring more for the first time ever...

So, I just beat up a groundhog  and butchered it and walked back to town to sell stuff... and can't find a shop!

I have crossed the human country back and forth hitting the capital, villages, Hamlets, castles... the works... I can find NO ONE to sell stuff to.

What am I missing? How do I find a shop? I hope in future versions in teh game you will be able to ask towns folk where the nearest store is :(
