DF Gameplay Questions / Turning grazing down/off?

Is there a way to edit the raws where creatures either don't have to graze or have to at a negligible amount?  After reading a good bit of boatmurdered I like the idea of just trading elephants for a ton of stuff, but apparently they just die when they're tamed.  Plus I liked not having to worry about animals with everything else that goes on.

I'm hesitant to try it since "casual" and "in the vein of Dwarf Fortress" seem like an awful combination, but Dwarfs?! literally looks like they took DF and made it casual.  I guess its just the digging and fighting aspect or something?  The trailer actually shows death by water and lava at the same time, so it could be cool.  I'm reserving judgment since just thinking about it is starting to bring up all kinds of "whats the point of you can't do x" scenarios.

Anyone try it?

Is this a feature now or what?  For some reason my cloth guy always turns any thread I have into cloth automatically, and I distinctly remember needing to manually do that in .18 before the mineral change.  Is this a new feature or is my guy just being really proactive?

PS - If this is a feature, I'd be all about setting stuff to automatically work assuming the fuel and/or supplies are there; this would make farming much less tedious and I wouldn't have to worry about SO many things.

DF Gameplay Questions / Best way to find metal now?

Literally as I clicked new topic my guys ran into copper ore, but what do you do if you want metal by mining now?  I turned minerals one notch up, but minerals seems like it can mean any number of things.  Is it literally just trial and error for actually mining metal now?

Not that I'm really complaining, but is the bug where metal armor and such only take 1 bar to make regardless of how many it's supposed to?  Also, if it is, what's the best thing to make and melt down to train armorsmithing and weaponsmithing?  I saw something about breastplates but figured I'd ask since I never looked into weapons that much; used to have way more steel than I'd ever need.

DF Gameplay Questions / Did layers get added back yet?

Haven't played/updated since 31.19 since I'm not playing without knowing the layers before I okay a site, and I was curious whether they got added back in.  If not, still not going to play when abandons will happen many more times because you took information out I relied on.  Also, not trying to be bitter, but I could care less about the realism argument.  You can know layers before you dig irl (kinda the whole point of the mining industry) and I'm not playing a video game for it to be realistic.

Reading through some threads on the new version, I'm seeing no reason to update to give myself a harder time.  I guess metals were too easy to come by and you could find perfect sites, but doing so took time and I usually had to end up with a flaw somewhere anyway.  I'd rather play another game than restart endlessly because I can't mine or trade for certain materals now, and there's absolutely no chance I'll play if the layers info being taken out was on purpose (or I'll wait for it to be modded back in).  Why give us an update that's harder where the game didn't need to be harder when I can just keep playing the old version?

I'll probably skip over some obvious ones but these are tricks I've learned through playing rather than through 51ppycup's stuff:
- Never bring cloth or bags, just thread.  Anyone can weave and make clothes so screw it.
- Never bring anything that can be made out of wood assuming I'm not going for a weird embark.  Theres no reason you can't make buckets, crutches, splints, etc.  I usually bring copper stuff like picks and an axe to speed things along, but you don't have to.
- Technically no one needs mining since anyone can clear out a z-level and get decent level, but I usually still bring level 5 miners just for the sake of getting stuff done quick.
- I'm sorely tempted to not bring any food but meat and just cook/brew whatever my level 0 plant gatherer gets from clearing out the area.  Obviously I'd bring seeds, but they're a point apiece so whatever.

Guess that wasn't as long as I thought... any more suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / What's the easiest way to get mad xp for smithing?

I'm slowly caring about more parts of this game as everything else becomes trivial, and now I'm onto quality.  I've heard that there's a bug where things that take >1 bar to make only take 1, but are there any armors or weapons that will also return 1 bar?  I'm asking because I melted something like 12 steel helms and got crap back for bars, and I'd like to avoid that.

Are there iron ores that aren't in the sedimentary layer, or at least not within chalk/limonite/whatever the other one was?  Lately it seems I either get the perfect spot with something random like sandstone (or obsidian instead of a sedimentary layer), or the above sedimentary flux in like hot weather or with barely any trees or something.  Basically I'm trying to ask can you make steel without trading and without having to have a "noob friendly" spot.

EDIT - Forgot you could find hematite in obsidian.  How often does this usually happen?

So I made a room with spear traps that are all connected to a lever, but how do I get it to be "set on repeat," whatever that means?  I think I also made the room too small (3x3) but I can always make another.

So far the game's great on the micromanagement end, but it gets boring when that's all I do because managing a military is beyond complicated.  Are there any tools (probably something in DwarfTherapist I'm missing...) that specifically help out with making/assigning orders and equipment besides the in-game menus?

PS - My most recent problem was my dwarved not training when it looked like I did everything right (and had gotten a squad to train before), but I'm guessing thats because they didn't actually have the short swords in their uniforms yet.  Do you also need all the armor pieces for them to start?

Maybe I shouldn't use a tileset, but when I try to run Dwarf Fortress it runs way slower than the Lets Play videos seem to run.  Does it really need a good computer?  I was primarily trying to get into this game because I don't have a good computer.
