DF Gameplay Questions / Object Testing Arena Question

So inspired by Kruggsmash's excellent Splatterface I have been playing around with my own personal arena tournament in the object testing arena but I wanted to see if there was a way to give created characters names.  I tried doing this with DFHack but in the testing arena it would spit out characters with no names and in basic dwarf fortress mode the created units just stand around like statues.

Any assistance would be appreciated and would making the combat logs far easier to follow than "Swan Man 1" vs "Ant Man 1"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How many Monster Slayers is too many...

So I recently came back to DF after a long lay off with 44.05 and I just accidentally poked a hole in the massive cavern system.  This has since caused a flood of about 15 monster slayers with seemingly more incoming.  I accepted them all in when they petitioned as I figured hey more people to the slaughter cant hurt but I haven't had a chance to mess with if they are usable to do tasks or if they only run into caverns if they have a path.

Also how many of these suckers am I going to get because it's been ridiculous and made me think maybe it's a bug.  Are they usable for anything like labors or should I just open up a path to the caverns and seal them in for the glory of the empire?

So Taverns make my dwarves happy and bring an influx of new npcs into my base.  Is there any reason why I would have a regular meeting hall other than I guess if you want a private no outsiders meeting space?

I love the changes im just trying to wrap my head around things and how I want to use the new features.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Inebriated Dwarf showing as no job

So im not sure if this is new or what but 3 of my dwarves in a new hot climate embark decided to just quit work and go sit at the original meeting place and get drunk.  They are listed as no job rather than getting a drink or taking a break and they have all the items they need.

Could it be something with the heat or with the inebriation changes does it show no job while theh get plastered and then they return to work?  Im kind of lost on what to do but I need those lazy buggers to get back to work or were all dead lol.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Multi-Race Sieges

So I had an interesting set of circumstances earlier in my fort.  It started with 2 quick raids by goblins who ran in killed all of my pastured livestock and then ran away.  In between raids I had 2 elves with what appeared to be deer come in and trade.  I didn't have a lot in non-wood goods to trade but I made to and they went away.  Nothing was said that made them unhappy and they never spoke to me about further trade agreements which I thought was strange.

Then the 2nd goblin raid came and again they rushed me killed my livestock, saw my drawbridge and ran off.  Just as they were all about to leave another siege starts but this time its 1/2 Goblins and 1/2 Elves.  First off is it normal to get multi-racial sieges?  Secondly WTF happened with the Elves because things were fine and now all of a sudden were at war.  Could my civilization outside of my control caused this drama?

Just curious as its been a bizarre turn of events. Now they mope around outside my fortress while I happily live fat on plump helmets and slowly train a small squad of Axemen & Axeladies.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Taking a Stroll with my Undead Pals

So i'm playing 40.07 and before I received any caravans I received a siege from Undead Goblins and Elves.  Now I panicked a bit but they are still buggy and sitting at the edge of the map though this time they are moving towards me albeit very slowly.  Now I formed a quick thrown together military and begin prepping for full lockdown inside the fortress, then about 2 seasons pass and when Winter comes all of a sudden the Undead are gone.

Not an undead in sight.  Do they just occasionally come take a stroll through your neighborhood and then walk away?  I thought it was very odd but ill thank my lucky stars and hope that my next visitor wants to trade with me instead of eating my dwarfy flesh.

Also I noticed before my embark that PITS was one of my civvies neighbors along with goblins.  Aren't Pits just the home of the Goblins?  Does that mean I get double goblins now? If so yayy more Fun!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Questions about Oddities in 40.05

So I have run into two weird things while running 40.05 lately I wanted to ask about. 

1.) The first is that I started my fortress while showing humans, elves, and goblins all near my embark point yet two years in I have not seen a soul beyond the dwarven traders who came once.  Any known bugs or issues out there about this?  I know of the issues with sieges but I thought elves not visiting the fort was a fixed bug.

2.) So my weaver went down into the caverns because hes an idiot to go get spider webs and when he saw a spider he ran in terror as I would expect.  What I didn't expect was that he ran 2 tiles away slammed into a wall broke his hand and passed out from the pain.  He eventually awoke but I have never seen a dwarf hurt themselves but slamming into something before and I was wondering if this was normal?  If so I must say Kudos to Toady because it was both hilarious and awesome.  I hope that weaver learned his lesson  ;)

So I was curious what other players use for stockpiles and which ones they setup to allow bins or not allow bins along with which ones they setup to use Wheelbarrows.  I will start off by saying im a casual player so i'm not nearly as experienced as many of you on these forums.

The only stockpiles ive setup are some of the basic ones like wood or Stone which my stone stockpile I setup to use 3 wheelbarrows that the dwarves seem to busy to ever go fill lol.  In relation to some of the workshops though the stockpiles can get a bit confusing on what I should include and whether ill have issues with bins/barrels.  Like with seed stockpiles for brewing/farming should I turn off bins and only allow bins/barrels for the food/booze stockpile? 

What about for butchering..I assume Refuse is just for crap that is never needed and should be outside but I always get a little confused on how to split up certain corpses or even certain parts.  The cook may want the meat but what parts do craftsman want or heck are there pieces that are useless I should include in my refuse pile.

 I have gone wiki reading so I have that knowledge but deciding how to setup good usable stockpiles gets rather confusing so I thought hearing what other players use and setup might be helpful not only for myself but for some of the other players who are relatively new to this crazy dwarfy experience. 

In the mean time im going to go back to hauling crap while zombie goblins throw a party on the edge of my fortress, apparently siege has a different meaning to them then it does to me lol.

DF Gameplay Questions / Some In-Game text disappears

I am having an issue where certain text in the game is being cut off or is completely disappeared.  I didn't see anything in the bug tracker so I am leaning towards this being something I am doing wrong.  This is the first fortress i've had dwarves with nicknames but only a few of them like on the unit list have what they are currently working on cut off.

In the military equipment screen occasionally gear will disappear from their list until I toggle back over to where it should be and it will reappear.

This is frustrating as I may be missing important things I would otherwise react to.  Any assistance on what I am doing wrong or a known bug perhaps that I missed in the tracker?

DF Gameplay Questions / [Newbie] Pump Stacks make my brain hurt

Hello All,

I've been a huge fan of DF but haven't had a lot of time to play with it.  I've recently jumped back in and I want to create a waterfall in my meeting room from a river and I want to make sure I know what the hell i'm talking about.

So i'm pretty sure Pump Stacks are where it's at but all the tutorials and wiki info has somewhat confused me on what to do and the whole power thing really has me lost.  So here is my plan and please let me know what i'm doing wrong so I don't let my dwarves have too much fun!

In theory the water runs down from the river one level below the meeting hall.  The pump then funnels it up one level above the meeting hall and back down again thus creating mist and preventing flooding I hope.  Also do I need anything blocking the pump on the meeting hall level or will all of that get sucked up by the pump above it?

Any help is greatly appreciated by my dwarves and our no fun fortress.

DF Gameplay Questions / Major Noob looking for help!!

Hello all!  First I want to say I have been reading the wiki and the complete newbie guide despite the fact its outdated. 

My questions more pertain to the look and setup of the game.  There are so many mods and tilesets compatabile with differing versions I want to know what are some popular ones up to date eith the current version?

Also the stories and the capabilities of this game are awesome but I find myself hoping theres some sort of better 2d interface that doesnt look like jumbled programming code.  I tried the total noob set but everything seems so far away its hard to even see the pictures of the dwarves.  I messed with the ini file to no avail.  Would messing with my computers resolution help to make it appear closer and clearer?  My current resolution is 1024 x 768.

Any advice or suggestions on what sounds like an awesome game is appreciated.
