DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves won't eat

They just refuse to eat. I've got over 79 meals cooked in the kitchen, but they refuse to eat them. What is going on? No one owns the food so far as I can tell. I'm not sure whether it matters, but most of the 79 meals are easy. Help please! My dwarves are beginning to die of starvation.

Just a question, but how much mining do you have to do before you reach the Underground river? I've been digging a while now, but no joy. An answer would be much appreciated, and also, please ber in mind I'm a noob to DF before you post a scathing respone to my question.

DF Gameplay Questions / construction problems

I should start by telling you all that this is my first-ever time on DF mode, so sorry if I ask any stupid questions. Anyway, my problem is that my dwarves are starting to get hungry, I've got plenty of fish, however, when I construct a fishery so that they can eat the fish, they don't do anything, no one starts constructing it. I've set some people to fish cleaning, but they still don't do anything, I've got all the resources I need, and they do everything except build the damn thing. If this keeps up, my dwarves are all going to end up dead of starvation. Help please.

like in adventure mode, I've no clue what to do, I don't know where to start, I don't know how to build stuff or look at dwarves thoughts and I don't know how to give commands, help!

play adventure mode? I have absolutely no clue what to do, when I leave an area, I can't enter any others, I don't know how to get a sword, I don't know what on earth the graphics mean, and I don't know what my skills do.
