DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Best embark combat skills for one dwarf?
« on: January 06, 2023, 01:01:29 pm »
I know it gets more complicated if you decided to have several start with combat skills, because some might be able to teach the others their speciality, but what is the best set of skills to start one combat dwarf with when you only have 10 points?

So.... I've noticed at least one person saying that the adventure mode stuff on the wiki sucks, probably because the last time they looked at it was 3+ months ago and they haven't noticed the massive updates to the thing starting about March 26th.

Before you tell any newbs that the wiki sucks and they shouldn't bother reading it, please take a look at the current state of (at least) the following two articles:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventure_mode_quick_start
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventurer_mode

If you still think the articles suck, then ok, but you should at least base your opinion on what they look like now and not what they looked like last year or something. We're talking massive updates/rewrites with several times the info that was there before.

DF Wiki Discussion / Improving military docs
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:25:19 pm »
Not sure about everyone else right now but I feel like the military docs are a bit of a mess. For example, recently I found this:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Military_interface

Which is great but I hadn't been able to find it as a new player because it almost wasn't linked to from anywhere. (I linked to it in about 3 or 4 places to fix this.)

What would people think about reorganizing them by expertise or "theory" levels as follows?

Beginner - How to create a squad, how to order squads around, basic stuff about the UI
Novice - More comprehensive reference docs on the exact features available. How to set up patrols, etc.
Expert - Design advice, theory, more detail about equipment

DF Wiki Discussion / "dwarves" not "dwarfs"

Come on people, it's "dwarves" not "dwarfs". Didn't anyone read Tolkien?

DF Gameplay Questions / Noob tutorial feedback needed
« on: April 27, 2011, 06:47:19 pm »
In order to help save the noobs I decided to start working on improving this:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Quickstart_guide (fortress mode "quick"start)

Most of this was originally written by GhostDwemer. I organized it into a lot of headings, elaborated on some stuff, updated it with some stuff for the latest version, and put some stuff in "tip boxes".

It still not really supposed to be a full tutorial as it doesn't always tell you exactly which key to hit exactly when, but hopefully it says enough that people can look up missing details without too much trouble. The goal is still to have something that people can use without a specific saved game (like Bentgirder) that's somewhere between a tutorial and a reference docs.

It would be great if someone could walk through the whole thing to make sure it's coherent and nothing major is missing, but any feedback (especially from people who just started learning the game) would be helpful.

I've been messing with rewriting the page for Fortress Mode on the wiki so that it looks more like the current page for Adventure Mode and I could use some opinions. (I asked about this on the wiki forum a while back but I guess not that many people are into reading that forum so I never got any answers.)

Basically I feel like we need a sort of root table of contents that mostly just points into other articles on the wiki and provides some UI documentation (keys, etc). The idea is to basically make one page that's sort of structured the way an actual printed user manual might be, but with links into other articles replacing most of the actual information.

Here is what I have now:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Dwarf_fortress_mode

Basically I tried to create an outline of everything in a fortress mode game, then I started collecting links to the various pages that already describe those things. The idea is that after you've gotten through a tutorial this is the next more self-directed place to go to find out what sort of things you can do in the game, a brief description of how to do them, and where to go to get more information. It's designed to bridge the gap between a tutorial and the full documentation spread all over the wiki.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Best mods for adventure mode
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:47:03 pm »
Any opinions on the best mods for adventure mode right now?

I'm not that concerned about being able to make bone equipment or turn coins into fireballs, but it would be nice to have a larger range of enemies (in terms of difficulty) and the actual possibility of obtaining good equipment by killing difficult things (as opposed to having some dwarves make it in fort mode and leave it sitting around).

I got this message a little earlier as I was fast traveling.

Anyone else ever gotten this? From what I understand, ages are delimited by how many megabeasts have been killed so I'm guessing this happened because I've killed some percentage of the megabeasts.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / fort abandonment and scattering
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:19:49 pm »
I created a mini-fort for the express purpose of making some otherwise unobtainable equipment for adventure mode characters, and I used dflair in an attempt to mark the tiles as non-scatter, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Luckily most of the good stuff was in iron bins which didn't seem to move, and I atom-smashed most of the unneeded junk on the map before abandoning, but corpses from the refuse pile are scattered all over the place and some of the fancy items are missing.

Also, I had accidentally unleashed HFS with dfreveal though the bastards never actually gained a path into the fort, but it seems like at least some of them managed to get out after abandonment. I'm unsure if this happened due to some sort of creature scattering, or if another previous fort I had right next to it (where HFS did get breached) had clowns migrate from it to the new fort after abandon. (Certainly my adventurer was ambushed by some out in the wilderness nearby so I know they must move around or something, but I'm unsure of how this works. For example, do they actually move around the region or do they stay at the same site and have a certain chance of ambushing people within some radius around the site?)

Things I'm wondering:

Does dflair not work or am I doing something wrong?

Do dwarves, when they abandon the fort, just take some of the objects with them when they leave? (I had actually forbidden all of the good stuff so that nobody would accidentally try to claim any of it.)

Do live creatures, even ones who are totally walled-in with no path to the surface, also get teleported to random map locations on abandon, potentially getting released from any prison they might be in?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / badass adamantine-clad paraplegic mofo
« on: April 11, 2011, 01:59:41 am »
This is the story of one Kol Odthob Mangrodizkil, dwarven badass.

Kol's career started with the usual people laughing at him until he killed a few night creatures and discovered an abandoned fort which was conveniently stocked with a massive load of adamantine equipment, including a full set of armor, adamantine cloth clothing, and a mastercraft adamantine axe.

Needless to say, between this and his vulture-wrestling, bogeyman slaying, ninja training he was going around kicking ass killing 30 or more random night creatures, titans, etc. Basically the usual stuff, nothing special.

Finally after all this, a local lord tasked him with killing a demon who killed the last major legendary figure in the land. (Seems that some annoying and since deceased dwarves a while back somehow managed to unleash some demons upon the land. Nobody seems to know how, but in any case it's quite a nuisance.)

After gathering together as many followers as he could (close to 20 at this point) he headed off to smite the demon menace.

Well, several leagues before even reaching the site his band was pounced upon by the demons. The battle was epic and glorious. He killed three of the demons, including gaining vengeance upon the foul demon who killed his legendary predecessor, but a forth demon, a winged devil proved somewhat troublesome.

After chopping its wings off, the fiend bit down and latched on to his leg ripping it away, his adamantine armor helpless to stop it! As if this weren't bad enough, as he was laying on the ground hacking at the creature the gruesome devil got hold of his right arm and ripped it off as well taking his ☼adamantine battle axe☼ with it!

Well, not one to be disheartened by these minor fleshwounds and the loss of his axe, he soon manages to finish the devilish beast off with a few well-placed kicks, punches, scratches, and bites. The monster finally fell to the ground dead.

Unfortunately there were still several demons left and all but two of his followers had been slain, so remembering his extensive ninja stealth training he sneaked away, faint with blood loss, managing to escape alive with his remaining followers.

Ignoring the minor inconvenience of a couple of missing limbs, he crawled his way back to the closest town where the first general store he found conveniently had a alder crutch for sale. Trading some random junk for the crutch, he took it with his remaining arm and stood once again.

At this point most dwarves would have opted for retirement, but Kol only laughed at such a ridiculous notion. Placing his shield in his backpack, he pulled out a backup ≡adamantine battle axe≡ with his crutch arm and headed off into the wilderness, with his two disciples, to regain his abilities.

Soon he happens upon a night creature lair and realizes that this would be a great place for some isolated ninja training. Shamelessly barging in, he encounters the creature who knocks him to the ground. Rolling out of the way of its attacks, he swings his axe and liberates the night creature's upper body from it's lower body in one shot (with no help from his wimpy sidekicks I might add).

Now, most people at this point would probably be looking for a little rest in the refuge of the lair, but no... no time for that. Kol, with his crutch, walks into the lair and perfects his ninja stealth crutch-walking skills training night and day laughing in the face of the drowsiness that plagues him. Not until his new crutch-fu technique is perfected does he finally take rest.

Kol continues to train his skills and plot his revenge, planning to face the demons once more and recover his lost ☼adamantine battle axe☼. The legend of Kol Missinglimbs continues!

DF Wiki Discussion / Proposed change to main page: doc flow for noobs
« on: April 07, 2011, 05:12:26 pm »
I've been trying to improve the documentation for for noobs lately. As part of this I'd like to propose the following change to the "New to dwarf fortress?" box on the main page:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/User:Ral/Testmain

Essentially the idea is to organize this into:
- What the heck is this and do I even want to try it? (about dwarf fortress)
- How do I install the software and what next? (How to Set Up and Play Dwarf Fortress)
- How do I start learning to play Fortress Mode and what tutorials are there? (Fortress mode quickstart)
- How do I start learning to play Adventure Mode and what tutorials are there? (Adventurer mode quickstart)
- So what's up with the latest features? (Game development)
- I still can't figure something out even with the docs. Where do I go for help? (Questions and Troubleshooting)

Right now this box is a bit too much of a hodgepodge and I, at least, feel like it needs to provide a more logical flow from "what the heck is this?" to the full documentation all over the wiki. Anything removed from this box will be prominently featured on the appropriate "introductory flow" page.

I've got the adventurer mode stuff into the sort of flow that I'm talking about, and to further help the flow of the fortress mode documentation I've created this:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Dwarf_fortress_mode

Now I just want to improve the general installation page and the fortress mode quickstart so that it encompasses both tutorials and the sort of minimal quickstart stuff that it already does.

Please let me know what you think of these proposals.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / You are melting!
« on: April 07, 2011, 03:40:42 pm »
Recently I headed of to kill a dragon with a few followers and, not surprisingly, it breathed fire which was a bit of a problem for the guys with no shields.

After the dragon was dead I kept getting the message "You are melting!" and this was apparently causing a lot of bleeding and melting fat damage. I looked at my equipment and I wasn't seeing any of it on fire like !!chicken leather tunic!! or anything, so I figured that maybe I just needed to cool down a bit or something.

So I sit there a while and the bleeding gets worse and I continue to "melt".

Finally I get the bright idea to remove and drop ALL of my equipment and after a few ticks the melting stopped, then the bleeding stopped but not before I was Faint, Pale, and otherwise almost dead from blood loss. I think my backpack or something burst into flame because there was a fire right around where I dropped everything.

So I go back into the dragon lair for some rest and recuperation and manage to heal up after a day or so.

After that I come out of the lair and my equipment is scattered all over the place for some reason, so I start going around picking up metal armor and putting it on and pretty soon I'm melting and bleeding again!

At this point I'm like "screw it" and I just grab some gold coins and leave ALL of my equipment behind since there seems to be no way to figure out which pieces are white hot, on fire, or whatever. Nothing is showing !!fire!! Luckily none of the equipment is particularly high quality or anything (base quality bronze and iron, mostly bronze).

I'm pretty sure I blocked the flames every time, but there were burning corpses everywhere and perhaps I was standing in fire the whole time or something. I didn't see my body on fire or anything except some burning corpses in tiles I walked through.

Any idea what happened here? I would have expected hot metal armor to cool after 24 hours. Perhaps there is some sort of temperature calculation bug?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / leg armor
« on: April 06, 2011, 06:46:02 pm »
According to the armor layering docs it seems that I should be able to wear chain leggings and greaves at the same time.

Only problem is that this doesn't seem to work.

What am I missing here? The dwarves seem to be able to do it in fortress mode. Does this just not work for humans?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / New Adventurer Mode docs
« on: April 06, 2011, 01:38:53 am »
I just got done updating the adventurer mode docs:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventurer_mode

Let me know what you think. Also, we could use a detailed description of Combat preferences as I'm not sure exactly how they work.
