I am really intrigued by the history generation in Dwarf Fortress. Can anyone give me a basic rundown on how its generated?

Just a quick recap of my day today i wanted to share. The world gen was rough. running the genesis mod, civilizations kept dying out and i would have to restart. It took ages to finally find a world with all civs intact AND some nice haunted territory to settle down in and call home. I embarks and suddenly realize i cant dig down any farther due to an aquifer. While fending off some skeletal monkeys i made a plug and dropped it down through the aquifer twice. That took many failed attempts, and the death of 3 valiant farmers who happened to be the ones pulling out the supports. Suddenly i have a nice fort, but alas it was not meant to be, the second i completed a bridge to the outside world, i was invaded. by an army of CENTAUR bowman. They obliterated base and 4 man army like a kitten in hot magma. I F***ING LOVE THIS GAME.
TLDR total annihilation

DF Gameplay Questions / damn aquifers

So far the only successful forts ive created are in perfect areas. Looking for a new challenge i embarked in evil terrain (zombie elephants and the like, luckily i embarkeed on the otherside of a river so they cant get to me yet), but i am struggling to get past an aquifer. How many layers deep are they usually? i have at max 3 layers of terrain i could drop through but that might fail miserably. Any other methods that are more likely to work?

As i play adventure mode i sometimes wonder when my the best hero meets his untimely end, i wonder what would his last words have been? Did he lament his terrible fate, rush into battle with a battlecry of epic proportions, did he want his mommy? at the very least it would add some interesting engravings. It would only really work well if it was reserved for only the best and most powerful heroes( i really dont want an engraving of nameless peasant 2314 discussing his favorite cheese as a bronze collosus steps on his house)
