DF Wiki Discussion / Is obsidian still an economic stone?
« on: March 21, 2017, 12:23:18 pm »
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Obsidian

> Obsidian is considered an economic stone by default; in order to allow general use at workshops and in architecture you must enable "obsidian" in the stocks "Stone" menu.

That seems to be no longer true in 43.05?  Or at least, obisidian is no longer under the economic section when setting up a stone stockpile.

What are the current limits of playing one fort for 20-50 years, retiring it, then playing another fort for 20-50 years, etc.?

What sort of things break over long periods of "background history"?  What stops working when you try to create and play multiple forts over a few hundred years in 43.05?

DF Gameplay Questions / Zero stress dwarf in 43.05?
« on: March 14, 2017, 05:09:52 am »
What should I do with a dwarf that is stuck at zero stress for a year now?  Everyone else in the fort has stress levels of at least -10000 (and some at -99999).  Except for the babies (stress 0) and the child (-7500 and getting less stressed).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even my recent migrants are well on their way to bliss.

Except for the dwarf that constantly enrages, with a stress level of -83000.  He's apparently just prone to get angry.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pathing and large-scale stone quarrying
« on: October 06, 2014, 12:07:10 pm »
How well does DF2014 deal with large mined-out areas such as a stone quarry where I am digging out a few thousand stones to make into crafts / blocks / furniture.

I would guess that just doing "d-d" on each layer would be a bad idea because it would create dozens of empty rooms.  So I'm considering doing "d-h" on each layer, with one side of the quarry having ramps to allow access from the top level to the bottom of the rock quarry.

And after I've finished quarrying out a 30x80 (probably 30z deep), I'd want to seal it up?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Prisoners chained in jail not drinking/eating
« on: September 06, 2012, 05:45:53 pm »
So, I have a rather difficult noble who likes to change their mind about what exports are and are not allowed right before the caravan leaves the map.  As a result, they ordered 15-20 dwarves to be chained up for anywhere from 30-800 days.

Since I had a lot of exceptional gold chain in the melt pile from training up a smith, I created (2) rows of chains (c), with food (F) stockpiles along the outside and drink (D) stockpiles up the middle.

Code: [Select]
FFFFFFFFFF
ccccccccccc
DDDDDDDDDDD
ccccccccccc
FFFFFFFFFF

The theory was that the 20 dwarves chained in a line would be able to reach food / drink and take care of themselves during their long incarceration.

That's not happening.  They're all thirsty / hungry and my nurses aren't able to keep them fed/watered.  I've lost 3-4 to dehydration so far.

Is our understanding incorrect?  Will chained up dwarves not eat / drink by themselves, even if food/drink is within reach?

I have a stockpile defined which accepts empty barrels.

Furniture - Type: Barrels, Stone/Clay: All, Other Materials: Wood
Max Barrels: 6 (it's a 2x3 stockpile)
Will take from anywhere.

It takes from the nearby Carpenter Workshop and the nearby Craftdwarf's Workshop.
It gives to the nearby still.

The problem seems to be that when a dwarf goes to use the still, you will get a job cancel message if there are no wooden barrels in the stockpile.  They don't seem to want to use the rock pots which are in the stockpile.  The rock pots are not forbidden, not marked for dump, the 'k' (look) shows them as empty.

So, due to a massive abundance of bone, I've started making bone bolts and bone crossbows in massive numbers.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Trap_design#Weapon_trap

How effective are weapon traps stacked with 10x crossbows (or bows)?  Obviously, it will take 100 bolts to fill the darned thing up.  Will all 10 ranged weapons attack as soon as an enemy walks into the tile, turning them into a pincushion?  Will it only work for 10 resets before running out of ammo?  Should I mix in a few other weapon types like training spear + corkscrew + dagger + etc and only use a maximum of five ranged weapons?

This will also give me something to do with all that elven bows and arrows I've looted (I embarked into a world where I'm at war with the elves).

DF Suggestions / Stockpiles, let me name them please!
« on: March 03, 2011, 12:49:57 am »
One of the big issues that I end up fighting with at the moment is stockpile management.  It would be nice if I could give it a nickname either when I set it up or using the 'q' key.  Right now, the game assigns a name and we can't change it.

The second issue is finding out whether a particular stockpile type is full or not.  I could see this added to the 'z' menu as an additional topic.  I would simply like to see (sorted by name):

- Name (or nickname)
- # of tiles defined
- # of tiles in use

With the ability to zoom in on the selected tile.  Assuming that I'm rational in my names, this would let me see that I'm running out of space for table storage, or empty barrel storage.  Or that my 10th stockpile of Dwarven Wine is filling up and I need to create an 11th somewhere.

Bonus points if the right side of the screen changes to show the contents of the stockpile as you arrow up/down the list of "Name, total, used" information on the left side.
