If I managed to trap all of my dwarfs in cages would the game end? Eventually I might get a migrant wave to free them but what if I'm at the population cap already?

I'm digging a trench around my fortress and I've hit the first cavern. I'd like to keep digging down- what's the best way to drain the lake so I can channel through it?
