General Discussion / Any airsoft enthusiasts here?
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:32:35 pm »
Exactly what it says on the tin.

Does grand ol' Bay 12 have any airsoft enthusiasts that like to get out on fields or maybe even join milsim games, or at least plays regularly with his/her friends? My curiosity has gotten the better of me.

For those that don't know what airsoft is: Think of paintball, but instead of paintballs and paintball guns, the players use replicas of actual firearms that fire 6mm plastic ball bullets. The whole thing can be a tad bit expensive to invest into, but I feel that it pays off after a few visits to a local airsoft field.

For a more visual explanation, there is a very good youtube channel that offers many airsoft videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/scoutthedoggie.

Other Games / Boardgame Online - Give the Other Players STDs!
« on: December 19, 2012, 02:07:19 am »
Exactly what it says on the tin. It's a very weird multiplayer game that requires no account or any sort of dedication. At the least, it's a time killer. At most, it's a very strange and fun game involving hookers, giving the other players STDs, and time-travel condoms. I play it now and then with internet friends; I figured I'd just let bay 12 know about it just in case you all want to give it a shot.

EDIT
Description from the site itself: Question: What kind of game is this?
Answer: BG Online is a board game. Online. Without a board, really. But on a website. Seriously though, it is! Just like all your classic board games you play this game with a bunch of other people and the first to cross the finish line wins! With the addition of hookers and brutal murders, of course.

Creative Projects / Bay 12 turntable.fm room, anybody?
« on: May 26, 2012, 05:39:07 pm »
Lately I've stumbled across a great website called turntable.fm, which places live people as DJ's in a room. I found the website through /mlp/ when somebody posted a thread advertising a pony music room, and I have to say that I've become hooked. I figured, hell, why not start up a Bay 12 turntable.fm room? The crowd can choose to skip songs if they dislike them, or alternatively give them a like and give the DJ playing the song a point. Music of all kinds is welcome and wanted.

An important note: Two DJ's are needed for full songs to play. If only one DJ is in line, then there will only be a sample of the song played. Thus, we must get a bunch of people in here to keep the room going and keep music playing.

I'll use this thread to help organize and manage the room. The only thing required to get in is a Facebook or Twitter account, and if those aren't available then you can also register an individual account. If you do log in using Facebook, there's also an option to change your username.

Get in here, Bay12!

Opening your eyes, the first thing that you see is the blinding white of some flourescent light, it's buzzing overtaking the sound of dripping water in the background. Everything smells musty, and damp. Your back is pressed up against cold metal, but it feels like you've been lying here for ages.

Other Games / Powder Toy - Trust Us, We Are Science
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:04:51 pm »
Powder Toy is, as many of you may know, a sandbox physics game that has heat, electricity and pressure simulation. It updates very frequently, and new things are constantly being added. The last powder toy thread that we had dried up in 2010 and I didn't want to necro it, so here you go.

Let's make science.

Life Advice / Livestreaming Difficulties
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:27:03 pm »
So I want to livestream something so that a distant friend of mine can watch along and comment, with us possibly putting it on youtube for later watching. What I'm having trouble with is trying to figure out which software to use when I want to livestream a game, such as TF2. What's the best software for livestreams, assuming that I'm using a streaming site like ustream? I'm totally new to livestreaming and any help would be appreciated.

I've recently gotten heavily into the survival horror genre because of great games like Penumbra, and thus I've began creating Let's Plays on my youtube channel. I'm starting with a semi-blind playthrough of Penumbra: Black Plague, and possibly some intermittent SCP: Containment Breach for now.

I use a face cam in the upper left corner as I play, and since the videos are survival horror, situations get intense and can be rather swear heavy at times. So they're generally not something I would recommend playing out loud with family members around.

I'm going to use this thread so my fellow Bay 12ers can track me if they wish, and post suggestions on games and actions within games. The following post is going to be reserved for organization purposes. I'll provide links down there.

A small notice: I sound very young, and I look kind of young. I am, however, going to legally be an adult in two months. Appearances can be deceiving. I know that whenever I open a youtube video and hear the voice of somebody very young, I can barely stand to watch for more than a few minutes because I can't take them seriously. I don't know how this applies to others, but if the sound of my voice is off putting just bear with me and I'm sure it'll be easy to get used to. I've always been self conscious of the sound of my voice over youtube videos, so I guess that's part of the reason I'm putting this notice here.

Other Games / Survival Horror General
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:02:33 pm »
Recently I've been getting into such great games as Penumbra and Amnesia, and it really seems to me that the genre is lacking. I've tried the new SCP game, which was pretty nice and kept me constantly guessing. I've also hunted down a couple more great games, like Cry of Fear, which is a total conversion mod for Half life. But all in all, it seems like such a great genre rarely gets any good releases.

So I'm wondering; what good survival horror games do my fellow Bay 12ers know of that they would like to share? What I'm mainly looking for is very good immersion, and moments that make you forget that you're playing a game and give you mortal fear.

Current Known Game List With Linkies

I'm also feeling obligated to add a link to PewDiePie's channel on youtube. He does excellent let's plays, and I found out about many new games through this channel.

Creative Projects / Original Bay12 Captions Thread
« on: April 09, 2012, 10:37:19 am »
So lately I couldn't help but slap some captions on some images I clipped from things like MLP. I want to share a few that I made, and get some that were made by other Bay12ers.

I am not looking for overused memes, or memes in general, just images with humorous captions. Snip them from your favorite anime, clip them from real life, whatever. Just make sure that they're original.

I'll start.

I don't know why, but if something that was relatively unknown begins to get mainstream popularity I start feeling little pangs of anxiety.

I don't know if it's the recognition of the flood of haters that comes in with the flood fans, or some sort of sub-concious hipster coming out in me or what. Take MLP, for example.  The show has been featured on national news sources more than once, and everytime I see it on one of those news sources I cringe a little bit, realizing that the show/work of fiction/whatever may have just gained a lot of mainstream popularity.
I don't know if it's just a little problem I have, and I don't know what that says about me, but whatever.

Anybody else feel those little pangs of anxiety when you finally realize something is becoming mainstream?

Creative Projects / The Bay 12 Writer's Contest
« on: March 25, 2012, 01:04:31 pm »
So recently I've had an idea to flex out my writing skills;  use the TvTropes story idea generator to generate story ideas and write short stories for them.  But then I figured hey, why not turn it into a sort of contest, like the Forgotten Beast Art Contest thread?

So here are the rules;

1. If you are the winner, use the story generator on TvTropes to get the idea for the short stories submitted.

2. Short stories should be presented in the [code] tag, to avoid huge page lengths.

3. After the idea is submitted, the writers should all write up their short stories and post them.

4. The person that submitted the idea then chooses the winner.

Also it would be great if anybody knows of any alternative methods for posting the short stories; maybe on Google docs or some-such?

Anyways,  I'll go ahead and submit the first idea.  For the sake of ease of use, I'll also link to each individual trope.

Setting: Souvenir Land
Plot: A Simple Plan
Narrative Device: Unhand Them Villain
Hero: Classical Antihero
Villain: Regent For Life
Character As Device: Men Of Sherwood
Characterization Device: In Harmony With Nature

Obviously, you may have to Play It Loose with some of the tropes; and by all means, go right ahead.  And post to watch if you enter, so I know that there is at least a minuscule amount of interest in this.

You awaken on a shore line after days of drifting.  You have nothing but the clothes on your back.  Looking up, you see a lush jungle envrionment, and a wayward sheep staring at you from across the bay.
