DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Those dam Aquifers
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:03:53 am »
Recently i started a new fortress on DF 0.34.11 and i started on top of a Aquifer area. When i started i had a easy time setting myself into the nearby hills. As i built my fortress deeper into the ground i hit a aquifer and not knowing how to get past them i instead designed my fortress. After a some time i started making defenses, including a pit that has a 3 level drop. As the pit was being dug one of my miners breached the aquifer and drowned. (One of the starting 7) I didn't notice as i was working about another part of my fortress. After some time another miner came along and also breached the aquifer finding the first dwarf and drowned. As i have no idea how to get past the rushing water in the aquifer i just let the body's sit at the bottom of the pit. When winter hits the water at the bottom of the pit freezes and i send one of my last 2 miners down to break the ice and reclaim my pickaxes and socks. But things go horribly wrong and my miner disappears, i assume he/she froze. So i decided to forget about the pit but i noticed my last miner is also gone.  :-[ Its going to get FUN soon since i cant finish my defenses.

Other Games / HavenForge- Like minecraft but realistic
« on: November 12, 2011, 04:58:36 am »
Quote
Havenforge is, in a very brief, basic description, a “realistic” version of Minecraft. By “realistic” I mean instead of a block-based terrain, the terrain in Havenforge is smooth, just like terrain in most other games, but you can still edit the terrain like you do in Minecraft (you can make caves and add features to the terrain).

However, in Havenforge, sculpting the terrain is not the only way to create things; there is also a very flexible object placement/modification system in place.

Objects are more like the objects in Halo’s Forge system or Garry’s Mod than objects (blocks) Minecraft. There will be a large list of pre-made objects which you can place, delete, move around, and rotate, without being constrained to a grid. The creative possibilities this and the sculptable terrain create are limitless. Though at the moment I have a very limited set of objects in the game (different sized walls, cubes, and spheres), the objects can already be used in many ways to create interesting structures.

Static objects like walls are not the only objects you will be able to create when the game is more feature-complete. There are also all sorts of dynamic, interactive objects planned to be included like teleporters, vehicles, explosives, chests, etc.

At this point, you have probably realized that creation is a big part of Havenforge, but the flexible creation system is only scratching the surface of the game. I won’t go into detail just yet, but rest assured whether you play to create things, explore, kill stuff, or to just hang out with friends, Havenforge will be an enjoyable experience.

DF Gameplay Questions / No, not the fun!!!!
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:40:13 am »
After a year in my fort, which I've had flooding problems. * Couldn't fix just made it worse* I recovered to see that goblins were bearing down on me before i could get a underground farm built. I've been hit by goblin scout party's before this, but it got worse i have about 10 goblins running around and killing my dwarfs that got left outside when i sealed the hatch. Now I'm stuck with 3 HUGE problems glaring me in my face. The flooding, the goblins, and now ghosts. "Food shouldn't be a issue since over half of my dwarfs are dead or about to be. What should i do? Should i keep digging downwards until i hit a cavern? Or should i attempt to claim the surface. "My entire military got killed  :P"

DF Gameplay Questions / How to plug a fun trap waiting to happen.
« on: October 21, 2011, 09:32:53 pm »
I was working on a water containment tank when it got flooded, I wasn't able to place any floodgates and stuff so i sealed the only door keeping my fort from flooding. Now after some time of expanding i want to finish the water tank, cause i accidentally flooded my room full of dead things. A simple how to fill something in from above solution will help. *Meh forgot's a lot of tricks i used to use*

P.s. Its linked to a river.  :P

DF Modding / (Req)[Utillity] Advanced modding tool request
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:14:43 pm »
I'm not really sure where to put this.

Main Idea
We've all wanted a simple put powerful modding tool to use with dwarf fortress, haven't we?
Well i had a idea for one that I believe wont be hard to make. What if we just select among a list of check boxes that correspond to tags. Lets say we want the dwarfs that never need to eat, all we will have to do is open up the dwarfs file scroll down to the check box labeled (Needs to eat.) and uncheck it. This will have the editor add or remove what ever makes them eat. {I'm saying that since i have almost no idea how tags work myself.}

Suggested Features
Capability to use check boxes to quickly edit raw files, but also edit the raw's directly.
Capability to edit corresponding tiles related to raw files, complete with preview.
Capability to modify code to add new tags or modify existing ones.(For compatibility to later Df versions)
Small built in wiki that shows property's of game items.
Ability to install and uninstall mods and tile packs with ease.

For those who are going to complain about it, I am willing to help with it if the tool is built in java code.
But i am not at all good at java.(I will attempt this if no body takes this up and i believe i have enough practice in java.) I believe there are other people who would really love to have this.
Suggest things to this so i can add them to the suggested features list, or anywhere else on the list.

DF Gameplay Questions / A place for ALL my questions from now on
« on: April 28, 2011, 09:02:35 pm »
Hey guys!!!!!!! This game is so complex isnt it?
1)       Well i have a question about storage space. First I will not use a cheating way such as a quantum storage area or packing it all into my trading thing. Now Ive tried building huge storage complexes using custom storage areas enabling everything that's not food, refuse, or a corpse. Ive also been building HUGE amounts of bins and barrels. Is there a better way that's not quantum stockpiling.

2)        Secondly I was trying to trade with elves and they insulted me. So i sent in my military of 10 and killed them all. Right now their corpses are polluting my trading spot and are putting off traders. How do i remove their corpses. Ive tried mass claiming them and dumping them. What do i do?

3)        Ive been dumping all the corpses that create miasma into a river using a drawbridge. First off is this a bad idea? Secondly will it pollute the river from that spot on, or will it simply clog the river with all the giant roach corpses and rotten animal corpses. Also I know the animal corpses can be butchered and have bones extracted, but my dwarfs seem to put it off. Any better way to dispose?

4)        I'm digging a magma pump system to bring magma to the surface to use a defensive structure.
I have no idea what materials are best to use in it. Also I'm having a lot of problems navigating the wiki so I'm really confused in a lot of it. Also what is a magma safe pump screw? I haven't been able to procure a anvil so i cant build a metal workshop. Also will digging a pipe system to the surface without adding any walls ok, or do i need to add walls to the pipe?

I typed this in like 5 minutes so some of it might not be clear. Just quote it and i will correct it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dead stuck in river!!!!!!!!
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:58:14 am »
Hey guys Ive got a rather troublesome issue at hand, while one of my recruits was fighting a badger bear they fell off a bridge and kept fighting in a 2 level deep river flowing at 7/7. After killing the badger bear who's blood pollutes my water supply now my recruit drowned trying to escape the current into my irrigation pipes. He drowned a brick away from the floodgate behind a ramp and now hes body is stuck. Ive tried opening the floodgates to suck in the dead body but that only got badger blood, which again pollutes my water supply. Right now I'm going to divert the water into a large area that will redirect the the river for a few seconds, or at-lease I hope it does.

Is this a good idea? How can i get the body so i can bury it and not worry about a ghost haunting my fort? Cause if it does it will mean lots of fun!!!!!!  :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf needs more food
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:54:43 pm »
Hey guys i was stupid and forgot how to get drink and food correctly. Ive had to reclaim my fort because i ran out of drink and didn't know dwarfs cant get water from lakes correctly, and my first dwarf to die was the architect that was building the well. After i reclaimed it when well until my food stores started to crumble, Ive gathered all the plants around my fort in the hope of keeping my dwarfs sustained. At the moment i have 14 dwarfs scrambling around doing my hopeless efforts, and its fall right now. Should i attempt to hold out till traders come or get my farm growing food? If i do get my farm running what should i plant. Please help my dwarfs only have like 10 food left over.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dealing with rouges?
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:30:24 am »
Hello there Ive been playing dwarf fortress for a few days and I believe i just scratched 1% of all the things that can happen in the game. But now to the question. Ive been building a fortress into the side of a grassy hill where the winters freeze the ice and blanket the land with snow. Also i don't know if this matters but I'm also running low on food. But recently one of my dwarfs has gone rouge. A jeweler dwarf that i didn't know i had before. Upon seeing announcement that he left civilization i built a jeweler workbench and i got a announcement that it was claimed by the very same dwarf that i thought left my fort. Just after that he started doing a mysterious project. I don't want to play until somebody assures me about this or gives me a hint on what to do. (I can also get a screenshot once i figure it out)
