General Discussion / Fitness Thread 2: Something Something Boogaloo
« on: January 14, 2023, 12:10:11 am »
Went to look for the old Fitness thread, turns out the last post was in 2021 -_-

Here's one to start this off. Been doing 100 burpees a day for the past 19 days, starting just after Christmas. Just wanted to do a challenge that would improve my cardio, and so far it's been great. Weirdly addictive past a certain point.

Form looks like this. The dude in this video is insane, the fastest I've done is 10:36, and I feel like I'm about to die.

Since it's the new year, with all its resolutions, wanted to see if anybody had any working out they wanted to share.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / I honestly miss bogeymen
« on: January 18, 2022, 05:47:40 am »
For some reason, waiting in evil areas doesn't seem to spawn bogeymen. My characters are always by themselves, and wait until dawn. This is vanilla Dwarf Fortress, new created world that with ordinary world gen, with a fresh DF download.

Does my character have to be sleeping, or moving? Any other tips to get bogeymen to spawn.

I make such combat oriented characters that ordinary bandits and creatures become either too easy or so difficult to find.

Having an eternal enemy to test my characters on would actually be fun, especially with the current Bogeymen being able to transform.

Apologies if this is in the wrong board, it's been literal years since I've asked a DF related question.

I keep running into the same issue since all I ever play is Adventure Mode. I create a successful adventurer, very survivable and lethal, but then I start running out of opponents, both bandits and monsters.

In small worlds I create I can find myself suddenly running out of semi megabeasts, night creatures, and bandits, leaving only the absolutely unkillable enemies and Dark Fortresses that kill my FPS. In larger worlds with higher populations, everything's so spread out randomly. After a while, both types of worlds end up feeling "empty", and I have travel huge distances to find anything to fight, or make loops of the singular island that consists of my small DF world.

What are some parameters I can adjust that'll allow me to influence the density of enemies in the world? Not just sites like camps and caves and roving armies, but also wild animal attacks? I find that increasing savagery in normal world gen only seems to increase the chances of finding giant animals, but they're all docile until attacked which doesn't help.

Roll To Dodge / Testgame: Roll to Streetfight
« on: September 07, 2021, 05:40:02 am »
Wanting to test out this combat based RTD idea.

Premise:

"Using the new app Duelr, people all over the country can now battle each other in legal, fair, physical fights. The rules are simple. No bringing any weapons with you, and any weapons you find at the neutral area are fair game. Fights are to the death. Apart from that, go nuts."

Forum Games and Roleplaying / [SG] Way of the Martial Arts
« on: June 10, 2019, 12:41:29 am »
What is martial arts?

Some say it is a sword, meant to destroy ones enemies

Some say it is a shield, meant to protect the valuable things in life

Some say it is an expression of the self. A means to develop and enrich one's soul.

Whatever it is, the way of the martial arts is the path you seek.

What is your name?

What is your gender?

And where does your journey begin?

A. The coastal city of Odenport, great seaside economic hub of the Empire.

B. The sleepy village of Milt, in the outskirts near the Lone Mountain.

C. The decadent city Valum, capital of the Empire and hive of treachery.

I'm talking stuff like Liberal Crime Squad. Games that never seem to have a Mac download.

Is there any other games ( especially rogue likes ) that are only playable on microsoft capable laptops that you can make me aware of, so I can justify such a purchase?

"Welp, you've done it. You've made the leap to becoming a hunter of the things that go bump in the night. Why? Doesn't matter. Loved one got killed? Psychopathic urges that need expression? Self-righteous mission in the name of God? Seriously, we don't care."

Anyhoo, here's your sign up form:

Name:
Age:
Gender:

"That's it. We'll drop you off at your first assignment once you get the paperwork done."

Just to be clear, this is a suggestion game. Everybody gets input on our plucky hero, in the form of votes and ideas.

Seriously, eight pages full of shit that I really don't wanna risk clicking. I'm not entirely sure how reporting works on this forum, never had to before. What's the fastest way to get rid of all of it?

General Discussion / Mayweather vs McGregor: Anybody interested?
« on: August 23, 2017, 12:47:05 am »
I'm watching this fight at the local pub with my Dad. Regardless of how awful, boring or otherwise farcical this fight may be, the food'll be good.

What are your guys thoughts on this one?

Six players. Anything goes, you guys have theoretically infinite magical powers, which will in all likelihood take you from godhood to a fate worse than death and everything in between. Dice will be 1d6.

You all wake up in a village. It's a nice day out. Go fucking nuts.

3. What kind of fighter are you? A speedy boxer, fighting from behind a jab and lightning footwork? A slugger, with lead in your fists and iron in your jaw? A furious swarmer, with stamina and aggression to spare? A trickster, relying on mind games, subtle fouls and deceptions? Or something else?

4. What weight class are you in?

Spoiler: Weight divisions (click to show/hide)

These are your choices, in your first steps as a boxer in the fictional nation of Nixtonia. Right now you're just fighting for pennies, but become the champion, and you shall have wealth, fame and immortality!

Roll To Dodge / Roll to kill each other with random superpowers [4/4]
« on: March 17, 2017, 07:48:51 pm »
So this is just a short game, as simple as anything. Click on this link and you'll be given a random power. You must kill the other three players of the game, and you win, that's it. No stats, everything is a d6 roll, situational bonuses will be given to creative and clever uses of power.

E.g., If you get fire powers, just blasting plumes of flame doesn't get you a bonus, doing things like superheating the ground, melting metal, asphyxiating opponents, will, more often than not.

Excessively OP powers will be nerfed, so you can't just reality warp someone out of existence or stuff like that. Again, thinking outside the box will help circumvent any GM-imposed limitations.

Character sheet:

Name: Yep
Power: Leave a link to the power you get on the wiki.

I'll take four players.

General Discussion / Things you wish existed
« on: September 18, 2016, 05:06:54 am »
We all know about the "Games You Wish Existed" Thread.  This is for everything else.  Forms of fiction ( books, movies, tv shows, anything not game related ), inventions, organisations, natural phenomena, anything that's not in existence that you'd prefer to be otherwise.

To start:  I want a TV show like Deadliest Warrior but focusing entirely on non-combatants.  As in, the show would still revolve around who would win in a fight, but for everyone but warriors/soldiers and the like.

E.g., who would win in a fight between Harry Houdini and David Blaine, two great magicians and performers of death defying acts?  Each figure's life story, known characteristics and quirks, all would serve to give them some edge or hindrance in a fight scenario.

General Discussion / Writing Down Everything
« on: August 29, 2016, 02:13:02 am »
I got this idea, from all places, the Twilight !Rationalist! Fanfic "Luminosity" ( which is really really enjoyable, this particular flavour of fanfic is right up my overly-idealised-intellectual alley ).  Simply put, it's a mental exercise where I just write down in a little notepad anything that goes through my head.

I've tried journals before, but the preconceived notion of required structure always seemed stifling.  Here I'm just doing random stream of thought type entries, and it's SO RELAXING.  It's also really revealing of my character.  The entire point of this exercise is to externalise the bajillion thoughts circulating in my head, and an unspecified amount of time later, read back on them and try and understand what gibbering mind wrote down this crap.  What I've found is that I'm not a naturally analytical person.  My thoughts are very emotive, dealing with reactions to things, rather than the things themselves.  Most of my writing is just personal affirmations reminding myself to keep a certain attitude, as well as sincere attempts at honest self-expression.

Does anyone else do this?  It's genuinely a great way to relieve stress, and practice your observational skills.  Since none of us have a Sherlock Holmes brain ( and if you do why haven't you conquered the world yet ) having an external storage space for raw data that doesn't need an internet connection or a lot of space beyond your pocket just frees up so many possibilities.
