    Beginner's Mafia XLIX
    The Underground Press
In the year of 19██, a revolution began in the area of Xlix. This was the century marked in history fraught with war. A war of words. Where governance would begin in the foundation of corruption, and thought be steeped in the order of tyranny, new methods had to come where military force was used against the true concept of law.

The overworld was silent. Only a few buildings were lit: infrastructure deemed important to be working 24/7 by those too unwary or unaware of the governing fist that bound them there. Many only knew what was channeled to them to know, functioning without the open-mindedness for societal growth. Brevity, was the discourse of the day, and details were brief giving only the vaguest ideas of imagination. It lasted for so long that the psyche and culture adapted ever so slowly to the creep of the new age. This was a dark time for the people--yet not all were blind.

In the city underground, there were those who drank from the cup of logic and thrived on the word of the wise: those that thought on the concept of the free, yet knew their limits as to their humanity. This is the Journalist Underground, a significant threat to the governing tyrant and those which the people would listen to everyday.

It was only a matter of time before the word broke out, yet even with extremes drawn in intangible lines, there are dissidents who fall one way or another.

    Introduction

Welcome to Beginner's Mafia XLIX. As the title suggests, this game is for beginners. If you have no idea how to play or you have some experience but you're still not quite sure what to do, then this is the right place for you. If you sign up, you have one goal: Learn how to play the game of mafia. Since this is not an easy thing to do on your own and we wouldn't dream of forcing you to do it, you will be assisted by two 'inexperience challenged' players, or ICs. The ICs are experienced players on the board who have signed up to help you learn. You can always trust that the advice they give is genuine, however, you cannot always trust the IC, as they are players in the game and have the same likelihood of being scum as every other single player.

If this is your first time playing, keep in mind that games of forum mafia take several weeks, and can sometimes run longer than a month, and that you are expected to be able to play continuously through that time. If you can't anticipate being able to play for that long for whatever reason, then maybe the game of mafia isn't for you. But if it is, then welcome to the mafia subforum, and I hope you have a great time playing.

    Gameplay and Concept

The game of mafia has a simple concept. A large group of players known as the town plays against a smaller group of players known as the mafia. In this setup, there are nine players, with seven town and two mafia.

Before the game begins, each players is given a role and an alignment by the moderator. There are two alignments in this setup: Town and Mafia. The town outnumber the mafia, but each individual member of the town does not know the alignment of any of the other members. The mafia know the alignment of everyone on their team and they can discuss the game privately in a special mafia chat. The mafia has access to a nightkill that they may use in the Night phase, while the town occasionally has roles with abilities that are used during the night.

Once everyone has a role, the game begins in the Day phase. During the Day phase, players may discuss the game and each player has a vote that they cast publicly to lynch a player. At the end of the day after some predetermined amount of time, the player with the most votes is lynched. Lynching does two things: it reveals a player's role and alignment, and it removes a player from the game. Once lynched, a player is no longer allowed to post in the thread.

Once the day ends, the game proceeds to Night. During the Night, discussion is prohibited. The mafia team picks a target to nightkill. If available, any town power roles use their actions as well. At the end of the night, the target the mafia chose to nightkill has their role and alignment revealed, and that player is removed from the game in a similar way to being lynched. Once the night ends, the game proceeds to another Day.

Both teams win by eliminating the other. However, due to the nature of the teams, they win very differently. The town win by finding and lynching the mafia, while the mafia win by avoiding being lynched and nightkilling.

    Potential Roles

Vanilla Townie - A member of the town with no special abilities.
Vanilla Mafioso - A member of the mafia with no special abilities.
Cop (Town) - A cop may choose to inspect a single player during the night and learn that player's alignment.
Jailkeeper (Town) - A combination of a Roleblocker and a Doctor, a Jailkeeper both protects and blocks the target from acting during the night.
Role Cop (Mafia) - Much like the Town Cop counterpart, the Role Cop investigates a single other during the night to learn their role, instead of their alignment.

This is still an experimental setup

The only role that receives the success of their results in this setup is the Cop and Rolecop. All other roles are not informed if they were successful or not.

One of the following setups is used:
    1. 1 Mafioso, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 5 Vanilla Townies, Sane Cop, Jailkeeper.
    2. 1 Mafioso, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies, Sane Cop.
    3. 1 Mafioso, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies, Jailkeeper.

Spoiler: Possible Role PMs (click to show/hide)

    Notes about the ICs

The ICs are here solely to teach new players how to play, but remember, they are also players in the game. This means they have the same chance to be scum as any other player and it is entirely possible for one IC or even both ICs to be scum. Regardless of their alignment, they are obligated to provide you with genuine advice, so that even if you don't trust the IC, you can trust the advice they give. Some ICs will use a special 'IC voice' to alert players that they are delivering honest, unfiltered advice, while some don't.

The ICs have the special privilege of being able to talk while dead. This is so that they can continue to give advice even if they are killed during the course of the game.

    Rules
    • Voting - Votes are cast in red and should include the name of the targeted player. Other colors may be ignored. Tiruin, Tiruin, and Tiruin you scummy scum!, are all acceptable ways to cast a vote if the target is clear enough.
      • If you want to remove your vote, you may put unvote in red text. You must explicitly state this to remove your vote. You may put the name of the player you are unvoting in red after the unvote, e.g., unvote Tiruin, but it is not required.
      • If the day ends with two or more people having the same number of votes, the day will end with no player being lynched.
      • It is also possible to vote for a no lynch to explicitly end the day without a lynch.
    • Death - When you are dead, you are prohibited from posting in the thread. You may make a single 'bah' post after you die, however, it must not contain any game-related information.
    • PMs - PMs between players are prohibited. You may freely PM the moderator to ask game-related questions, however, what the moderator may reveal is limited.
      • Do not quote any direct correspondence with the moderator, including role PMs and rule-related queries.
    • Edits - Editing posts is prohibited. Do not edit your post for any reason, even if your post comes out as a train-wreck of formatting, spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar. The preview button exists; use it.
    • Replacements/Activity - If you find yourself unable to play, you may, and should, request a replacement. We may try to talk you out of it if it's for any other reason besides you not having enough time to play.
      • Prods may be requested for a player. If they have not posted in the thread within 24 hours, excluding weekends, they will be prodded.
      • If you stop playing altogether without notifying me, you will receive a warning after 48 hours, and a forced replace after 72 hours.
      • Please be active. The greatest killer of beginner games is poor activity.
    • Day/Night Length - Days will last 72 hours. Nights will last 24 hours, or until all night actions are received. Weekends are not counted in terms of day or night length. E.G., if a night starts at 12:00 PM Friday, it will end at 12:00 PM Monday.
      • If the game is in a LYLO or MYLO situation, there will be no formal deadline. >50% Players must vote to end the day, or votes must not change for 24-hours.
    • Extensions/Shortens - A player may vote for an extension to increase the length of the day. It requires >33% of the current number of players to request an extension for an extension to be granted. A player may also vote for a shorten. It requires >50% of the current number of players for a shorten to be granted. Extensions increase day length by 48 hours, while shortens will immediately end the day as soon as possible. There are only two extensions per day, with other extensions being granted at the moderator's discretion for special reasons.
      • Votes for extension/shorten are done in boldface. Extend, Extension, Extend it up yo, Shorten it out y'all are acceptable ways to vote for an extension or shorten
      • Extensions or shortens can be opposed. Opposition to extensions or shortens are done in boldface. Oppose Extend, Opposition to the Extension, Oppose Shorten, are acceptable ways to oppose an extension or shorten. Oppositions count against the total number of votes for an extension or shorten.
      • Extensions count as opposition to hortens. Similarly, shortens count as opposition to extensions.
      • Extensions, Shortens, and Oppositions will be counted and processed by the moderator in the order that they are cast.
    • External Participation - While the game is ongoing, if you are not a player, an IC, or a mod, refrain from posting in the thread.
      • Play to win! There is no hopeless situation, so don't ever give up. And remember, be bold! You learn nothing and you gain nothing by holding back.
    • Miscellaneous - Use of cryptographic hashing is not permitted.  If you want to have hidden/obfuscated messages in your posts for later use, come up with them using your own wetware.

      The Court of Colors

"Better the rainbow, than an endless sea of grey. Nimium ne crede colori; Paulo maiora canamus."

'Tis a wonderful morning in the cities of the Midlands. All throughout the country, celebrations are being held in the passing of the twin-suns as the reflecting colors in the skies turn from mellow hues of yellow, orange and pink to the auburn shades of the coming night. All throughout the country, villagers and freemen celebrate the passing of the day, emphasized by a grand festival in the Bastion and its surrounding village, where the Court of Colors is held once more. In the town square, all people of different race, rank, life and blood gather to celebrate the one thing that brings them together. Fellowship, and Fun.

There may be strife in the land: plots of assassination of the King, a coming war on several fronts and the growing creep of the cold of winter, but there is always a time for everything. Today, and in the days proceeding, the festival of the Shadowed Light will occur, spearheaded by the Nobility in reverence to tradition and lore.

And you are one of the key players in the act.

        • If you want to remove your vote, you may put unvote in red text. You must explicitly state this.  It is possible to put the name of the player you were voting afterwards, but it is not recommended as it can lead to confusion.
        • If the day ends with two or more people having the same number of votes, there will be no lynch (except in special circumstances regarding votes and abilities tied to votes--none of which exist in a BM)
        • It is also possible to vote for a no lynch, which in turn skips the Lynch-phase after every day and proceeds straight to the Night phase. This is not recommended in Beginner's Mafia and suggested to only be used in certain special cases.

      • Day/Night Length - Days will last 72 hours, excluding weekends. Nights will last 24 hours, or until all night actions are received. Neither of these include weekends. In the possibility of extensions in play, a day will last at most, a week's time from day start.
      • Extensions/Shortens - There are a total of Two extensions per game-day, with a mandatory 24-hour extension added whenever the Moderator announced a replacee coming into play (and in regular games, when day actions such as day-kills go off). A player may vote for an extension to increase the length of the day. It requires >33% of the current number of players to request an extension for an extension to be granted. A player may also vote for a shorten. It requires >50% of the current number of players for a shorten to be granted. Extensions increase day length by 48 hours, while shortens will immediately end the day as soon as possible. There is no limit to the number of extensions that may be granted with one exception. If an extension goes through and players do not make use of it there will be no more extensions on that day. If you request an extension USE IT!
        • Votes for extension/shorten are done in boldface. Extend, Extension, Extend it up yo, Shorten it out y'all are acceptable ways to vote for an extension/shorten
        • Extensions/shortens can be opposed by declaring the opposite (1 shorten cancels 1 extend request and vice versa), or stating directly: opposition (Oppose Shorten/Extend, I oppose this notion!, My Oppose goes to this), and they count against the total number of votes for an extension/shorten. Extensions count as opposition to shortens and vice versa.
        • If the game is in a LYLO [Lynch or Lose] or MYLO [Mislynch or Lose] situation, there will be no formal deadline. >50% Players must vote to end the day, or votes must not change for 24-hours.  Votes to end the day may, at the voter's option, be contingent on the lynching of the player being voted on, and will be considered null should a different player gain the majority vote.
      • External Participation - While the game is ongoing, if you are not a player, an IC, or a mod, refrain from posting in the thread.
        • Play to win! There is no hopeless situation, so don't ever give up. And remember, be bold! You learn nothing and you gain nothing by holding back.

      Behind Enemy Lines

"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."

Several years had passed. Several fruitful years from since the incident of insubordination and treachery in the realm. Several years of peace and prosperity. The kingdom was whole, and safe from external threats once more. The people rejoiced as walls were constructed, patrols were enforced and curfews were made; for despite the added sense of security, they knew that they would sleep soundly once again.

However, many oft forget that internal dangers are the root of any downfall. Deep in the heart of the realm, there were plots against the King. His sole heir was the target of few--seemingly lackluster assassination attempts, but other than that, nothing else was of note.

      Until one day...

*Jailkeeper (Town) - A combination of a Roleblocker and a Doctor, a Jailkeeper both protects and blocks the target from acting during the night.
Roleblocker (Mafia) - A roleblocker may choose a single player to block, preventing that player from performing his action.
Godfather (Mafia) - A godfather appears town to Cop inspections.
*Role Cop (Mafia) - Much like the Town Cop counterpart, the Role Cop investigates a single other during the night to learn their role, instead of their alignment.

The only role that receives the success of their results in this setup is the Cop. All other roles are not informed if they were successful or not.

There is no limit to the number of Vanilla Townies or Mafiosos the game may have, but all other roles have a maximum of one.

There is no limit to the number of extensions that may be granted.
        • Votes for extension/shorten are done in boldface. Extend, Extension, Extend it up yo, Shorten it out y'all are acceptable ways to vote for an extension/shorten.
        • Extensions/shortens can be opposed by declaring opposition (Oppose Shorten/Extend, I oppose this notion!, My Oppose goes to this), and they count against the total number of votes for an extension/shorten. Extensions count as opposition to shortens and vice versa.
      • External Participation - While the game is ongoing, if you are not a player, an IC, or a mod, refrain from posting in the thread. I know this won't stop some of you.
      • Play to win! There is no hopeless situation, so don't ever give up. And remember, be bold! You learn nothing and you gain nothing by holding back.

      ~~Tales of Shattered Dreams~~
      -or-
~The Sundered Earth: An RTD Adventure~

You wipe the sweat off your brow as you breathe in the heated air once more. It is the dawn, and the twin suns are visible in the sky above, shining in all their auburn glory on the land below.

You've heard the tales, you've learned from the elders, this world was more than this: thriving civilizations lush with resources, land and power dotted the Earth like a mutual plague. Tales of adventurers and scholarly adepts roamed the land, gathering knowledge by the handful and creating a utopian society wherein all races - monster or myth alike - could live together in a peaceful realm.

Now, however, you are but one of the lucky few who serve under a neutral banner in a hostile world; cloistered in this Bastion of refuge, for your own protection from the evils that lurk on the outside. Cloistered, for the basic reason that you exist. You are blessed with the mark of Ecid, one of the ancient gods who ruled over the Earth. With the power to sway the very notion of fate and time in your actions - whether for good or for ill - you are treated with suspicion, even hunted for that power.

It is said that nothing is permanent, and change affects every being. The status quo aims for a reversion into the past, to undo the mistakes made by their ancestors and to relive that which was once thought lost for eternity. You, however, have your own personal goals.

You hear the call of your leader resound through the area, and decide to meet up with your allies before any work can be done. As you bring your thoughts back to reality, you cannot help but notice others making their way along with you, practicing minor and major cantrips as they move.

But this will have to wait. You know you haven't introduced yourself to him yet, and he would probably need a sheet of identification to begin with. You have been in this fortress for more years than you can count, and teamwork is one thing instilled in your memories for survival.

The world awaits your presence. The Bastion is proud to bear your name.

Mafia / BM XXXVI: The Dirge of the Dead -- Scum Victory!

      Beginner's Mafia XXXVI
      Back to the Dark Ages

"The Red Moon is said to be a herald of death and an omen of judgement. War is looming on the horizon, and peace will be shattered once more."

It was night. Flashes of lightning and thunder echoed across the heavens above, proclaiming the coming of a powerful storm along the coastal boarder. Silver drops of rain wreathed through the sky, falling upon the rooftops and torches of the people below, reminding the peasantry of the coming harvest with their constant tapping on the entry door.

It was peace, the very semblance of that which ruled over the realm for decades despite the natural cacophany. And yet, it wasn't this that woke up the commoners -- they were already awake. The sky was filled with the crimson glow akin to blood as the people fixed their gaze on the source. A raging fire.

In the distance, deep in the heart of the realm, the only bastion that was said to be invulnerable to any foe bore a gaping hole in her eastern section. The smell of burning pitch and tar filled the air, along with that of the dead and dying. It was an act of sabotage, surely, but who could've provided the firepower for the operation? Peace was the fact of life at the time, and it had been so for the past decades that most of the populace forgot how grim a war could be, only hearing about tales of conquest and glory through books and tomes.

Of course, this was perhaps all a plot from the inside.

      Introduction

Welcome to Beginner's Mafia XXXVI. As the title suggests, this game is for beginners. If you have no idea how to play or you have some experience but you're still not quite sure what to do, then this is the right place for you. If you sign up, your goal is onefold: Learn how to play the game of mafia. Since this is not an easy thing to do on your own and we wouldn't dream of forcing you to do it, you will be assisted by two 'inexperienced challenged' players, or ICs. The ICs are experienced players on the board who have signed up to help you learn. You can always trust that the advice they give is genuine, however, you can not always trust the IC, as they are players in the game and have the same likelihood of being scum as every other single player.

Mafioso - A member of the mafia with no special abilities.
Cop (Town) - A cop may choose to inspect a single player during the night and learn that player's alignment.
Doctor (Town) - A doctor may choose a single player to protect during the night, preventing that player from being nightkilled.
Roleblocker (Mafia) - A roleblocker may choose a single player to block, preventing that player from performing his action.
Godfather (Mafia) - A godfather appears town to Cop inspections.

The only role that receives the success of their results in this setup is the Cop. All other roles are not informed if they were successful or not.

There is no limit to the number of Vanilla Townies or Mafiosos the game may have, but all other roles have a maximum of one.

Spoiler: Character Creation (click to show/hide)

      Quote from: Mechanics
The action results are defined by a six-sided die roll:
[1]: Epic Fail. Your efforts only worsened your situation. This may carry on to the future if not in the current time.
[2]: Fail. Your skills or luck were insufficient.
[3]: Meager success: The situation didn't improve by as much as you have intended.
[4]: Success: Your efforts were sufficient to achieve your goal.
[5]: Epic Success: Your skills and luck have combined to ensure your success.
[6]: True Success OR Overshot: Your efforts were more than required for the goal's completion, and your luck is such that unfortunate side-effects may happen.

If at any time something threatens a player, that player may make a roll to avoid the threat.

For each action, any number of rolls may be made, as determined by the GM.
Primary causes for multiple rolls include, but are not limited to:

      * Actions explicitly composed of multiple actions
      * Actions that imply other actions that are not declared free

Modifiers are mostly applied to the armor/weapons or magical bonuses that characters learn while traversing the land in their adventures. If a character has an ability, it will be hidden in acronyms. If certain modifiers are attached to held objects (i.e. Weaponry), and an action is made without the weapon, the bonus (or detriment) will not be added in the roll.

Each successive dodge roll during a turn, unless it is a dodge against the same object or character, will get a -1 bonus.

If you are Stunned, Dazed, or otherwise receive a temporary penalty to overall or individual rolls, this penalty lasts until your next action is resolved, and not through the whole turn.
If you receive a long-term effect that has the potential to alter itself, you get an Effect Resistance roll immediately after your action is resolved to determine the spread and consequences of the effect.
If you are Unconscious, whatever penalty you receive will not reduce your roll score below 2, unless stated otherwise.
If you receive a mortal wound but are not killed outright, you need to pass a roll to dodge Death at the end of every turn. Only bad rolls here will provide penalties to survival rolls.

You can spend your turn to help another player achieve his goal. If your roll is higher, it is taken as the success roll for the action.
You can also spend your turn to botch another player's action. If your roll is higher, its opposite is taken as the success roll for the action.
In both cases, individual player rolls determine what happens to the players in the course of the action.

DF Gameplay Questions / Truly Dead Civilization?
      « on: September 10, 2011, 11:06:38 am »
<Genesis Mod, but I don't think they could mod this one  :) >

Before making a Dwarven Fort, checked world. No surviving Civ in Legends or on map. All Dwarf ruins. Checked Adventurer mode, no dwarves available.

So made a fort and abandoned it twice because of forgetting cats and picks...

Third fort went well, received the two promised migrant waves and began to harden my defenses/walls. Got a siege with the enemy at war with, didn't end well for them. Current population at the end of first year was about ~20-30

Then spring came just as I was driving off a werewolf siege.

      Some migrants have arrived!

~18 of them too. Bolstering my population to 44 Happy dwarves! Many of them were skilled and I got a grand master wound dresser and suturer both in one dwarf. A legendary weaponsmith too!

I thought in a dead civilization fortress you only get the guaranteed two migrant waves? Or am I receiving my lost men that left years earlier, I know I didn't give them any skills at all that were partly useful.

Note: I did no editing in the raws on this.

I embarked on a biome complete with a river leading to a waterfall. It was filled to the brim with Longnose Gar, Pike and Carp. Mostly Carp. A few weeks in and I get reports of "The Carp is Fighting".

All were filled with death or injury on impact. Carp fell from the 5-z-level high waterfall and killed themselves/vomited in the water. Now the riverbank is colored red and green. Glad my watersupply is upstream of it all.

I thought water sort of cushions a fall?

      DF Gameplay Questions / Abandon!
      « on: September 06, 2011, 09:31:02 am »
I made a fortress/ home for my adventurer and then abandoned it in a haunted biome.

A few years (or was that weeks?) later, I train my adventurer hero up and grab all the armor/loot in the home and venture out to train myself and gain fame. A few weeks or so in and I come upon an abandoned town & hamlet (belonged so some other race but was depopulated in world gen). Near the abandoned fortress.

I expect nothing to be alive since I see "mysterious material" door or something, nobody is even alive in them. Then to my surprise I see one of my dwarves, now with better armor and backpacks + waterskins! They even have upgraded weapons! (From copper pick > Red Steel pick <Genesis mod but that doesn't count>) I talked to them but they have the same conversation options as a lost soldier. The only ones worth talking to were the battle experienced ones, they gave quests! The other civilians were just 'useless' civilians.

What was weird was, I checked their backpacks/waterskins and they have leftover meat from monsters slain back in the fort even when I know I didn't butcher any of them. Stagnant water in the waterskins. Most of the backpacks/waterskins are made of the stuff back at the fort. Even a forgotten beast backpack, now designed and decorated.

Did anyone else experience stuff like these?

DF Suggestions / Allies and their Armies
      « on: August 18, 2011, 08:00:52 am »
So here comes up my idea of trading partners. Lets say you traded a lot with the humans and elves that they are always ecstatic in meeting you (for they leave with a lot of profit).

Here comes your chance to get paid back, a goblin army arrives at your doorstep (but you knew of this in advance as you alerted your allies through the trade screen) and gets promptly crushed by the military. The military in question are small squads of mounted humans with elven archers at their side, following your call for assistance as you have no military / just want them to do the work.

So my suggestion is (since the army arc is soon): Why not add an option in the trade screen/military screen to view potential allies (through trade of course as in the profit from trading since the other civs need to pay for them) and have a "request aid" option in which they send some randomized squads to your fort for maybe a season or two? A few weeks at most. In which they will act as a bodyguard military in those times where the player leans towards economic gain other than military force? There must be a limit which increases everytime your allies are called to aid you, you cannot attack them nor can you loot their gear at all (if they die, then the trade caravan/whatever else they send to you gets it. Permanent forbid?).

Since I guess in the upcoming versions Toady would make the game more realistic in battles. So its like a combined force to match a huge army thereby increasing survival chances.

What are your thoughts on this?  :)

      Nobles...

Many hate them for their unusual mandates, their needs are nearly overbearing at times and sometimes, they just jail people if they can't get what they want.

      Then an idea hit me.

The Nobles, instead of suffering from unfortunate accidents and scouting the caverns alone; why not create a Noble fighting force so that they can fight for their rights and needs (as well as for the whole fortress).

The only thing I'm wondering about is, if nobles cannot or will not work, will they work in the military as normal dwarves do? (Even become champions in their art?)
