DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So like, hypothetically...
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:29:11 pm »
If I wanted to sprinkle magma on my soldiers to burn their nerves and fat and make them fireproof and painless...

How would I go about that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Webs... webs everywhere
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:14:43 pm »
So the battle against the giant spider forgotten beast that had managed to climb halfway up my main staircase before being intercepted was going pretty well until the darn thing, with all it's legs broken and chop-marks everywhere, manages to break away from the five or so axedwarves going lumberjack on it's ass and start spewing webs... everywhere. 10 pages of webs later, my militia dwarves can't move closer to the bastard for all the webbing, and production has essentially ground to a halt because half the population of the fortress is stuck in there as well. Actually, looking at it now, it's been at it so long that some of it's wounds have started to scar over. How do I stop it before my dwarves either A: Drown in webs or B: Starve to death?

Actually, on an interesting side note, the thing can shoot webs purely on value of being a giant spider - it doesn't read as having webs in the description.

Title says it all. Post the quickest things absolutely went to HFS in your fortress.

Mine would be the time a desert titan (3-horned web-shooting bull made of sandstone) appeared and slaughtered every living thing in my fortress in 3 minutes. At the time, the fort had a pop of 120. 70 of those were killed in the first 40 seconds.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I ask this every time I come back...
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:05:41 pm »
Okay, having returned from another lengthy hiatus during which it seems several updates have passed, I am forced to once again ask...

Did Toady change the way minerals work? The only reason I don't pass this off as my paranoia is that I heard someone talking about 'mineral scarcity' and that sounds like something I probably want to know about.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So I just got a migrant wave...
« on: February 19, 2012, 10:27:13 am »
That brought my population from 17 to 89. I am now presented with a few problems: it'll take forever to make enough bedrooms, my military isn't ready for sieges, my food production isn't that high, I don't have the patience to screen every migrant for vampirism...

Oh yeah, and of my 89 dwarves,

50 OF THEM ARE CHILDREN.

How can I proceed with my infant fortress? Am I doomed? Should I arrange an accident for the useless kiddies?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Nord Fortress
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:49:09 pm »
Being dirt poor, I haven't had enough money to buy Skyrim. Being unable to play this amazing game, I went for the next best thing.

Enter the fortress of Anriztirist. It is in a cold biome surrounded by mountains. Here are the following restrictions I will be playing under:

The entire city will be above ground.
Trade caravans will be kept outside of the city walls, always.
There will be a separate space for nords dwarves born in the city and those born outside of the city.
The S7 and their relations will get a special pantheon in the center of the city.
All non-norddwarf members will sleep in darkened alleyways, recieve the worst food, and generally treated with less respect than the toilet paper used by the S7.
If a mayor makes a harsh mandate, there will be an uprising via tantrum spiral. Always.
If any dragons or other special monsters show up, it will be the task of a signal nord dwarf to defeat it. This nord dwarf will be treated with great respect, and given the title Dovakhin.
All nordic dwarven dead will be in an intricate tomb beneath the city. If a necromancer is available, it will be locked down their to ensure that all bodies are undead. Always.
All non-nordicdwarven dead will be dumped outside and left to rot.
The fortress will drink mostly mead. When honey production becomes stable, it will drink nothing but mead.

This thread will chronicle the story of this fortress.

Comments? Suggestions?

So I got the danger room going, sent the soldiers in, turned it on. What I had forgotten was that my two finest soldiers (an axe lord and a sword lord) were unfortunately not intelligent enough not to bring their new arrival with them. On closer examination, the kid is near the perfect soldier (strong, tough, fast...), all in all the son of his parents. His brief stint in the danger room, however, didn't treat him well. Broken spine, broken arms... bruised everything... he'll never walk again.

So what do I do with the kid now? I'm terrified to send mom and dad back into the danger room for fear he'll die and I'll have the two most badass dwarves in the fort go nuts.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How many crisises has your fort survived?
« on: November 13, 2011, 03:01:04 pm »
See title.
Mine's managed two.
One was fairly standard; a few goblins broke the line of defenders and got into the fortress, but were beaten to death by the civilians. Never doubt the power of the dwarven dog pile.
The other one happened when the first caravan (new fort) left on bad terms (I swear, that diplomat was a whiny little elf) and I took a look at the stocks to find that there was no plump helmet wine, no plump helmet seeds, and no plump helmets. That winter was a hard one... a lot of rodents were eaten, a few migrants died of dehydration, and more than one violent riot was put to rest by the militia. Come spring, we began to forage outside for food, though all we really got was a lot of blade weed... we also hunted and consumed badgers. Most of them barely made it to the stockpiles before they were set upon, let alone being cooked. Children continued to die of malnourishment. Tantrums ran rampant. One of the milita starved to death in his hospital bed after being injured during a riot involving a legendary miner. Finally, in mid summer, armageddon broke out with a tantrum spiral brought on by the consumption of someone's pet cat. The survivors were most of the S7, minus my mason and one of the farmers, as well as five members of the militia, much of the hospital staff, and a few kids.  They survived by eating fisher berries gathered from outside, drinking water, and partying nonstop to stave off insanity. At last, Autumn came, and these were the few dwarves left to meet the caravans. Nevertheless, we wheeled out the stone crafts to the trade depot. At last, the plump helmets!
EDIT: Should also say that we ran out of cave wheat and rock nuts, and didn't have the capacity to get anything out of the sweet pods.
Then he charged me all my stuff for ten plump helmets and threatened to walk out again if I refused.

Bastard.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So has Iron become absurdly rare?
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:20:20 pm »
It's been several months since I last played to any real degree. Since I began again, I have made four fortresses. Not one of them has had any iron at all. Tetrahedrite, coal, gold, platinum... but no iron.

So did I miss something?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So I started a new fortress.
« on: October 21, 2011, 04:44:06 pm »
"Ooh, plenty of metal in this one! That's perfect for my fast military strategy! I'll go here!"

I go in, strike the earth like a pinata. Five levels down and guess what I've found:

Tetrahedrite
Gold
Galena
Cassiterite
Cobaltite
Malachite
Many, many, many assorted gems

Guess what's missing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven Super Soldier Project
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:28:55 am »
They shall be my finest warriors, these Dwarves who give of themselves to me.
Like clay I shall mould them, and in the furnace of war forge them.
They will be of iron will and steely muscle.
In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest axes will they be armed.
They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them.
They will have tactics, strategies and magma so that no foe can best them in battle.
They are my bulwark against the terror.
They are the defenders of Dwarfhood.
They are my Dwarf Marines...
...and they shall know no fear.

So, starting a new fortress after a rather lengthy hiatus, and I want expert opinions on the viability of my planned 'Dwarven Super Soldier Project'. In short? I was going to shove a squad full of whatever dwarves I could find with combat skills in a room with weapons, shields and armor. I would supply them with a well and some uncooked plump helmets, and give them all orders to train ceaselessly. I would lock the door and put several traps in front of it. I figure any dwarf that comes out of that alive and sane is going to be a stone cold killer.

Well? Will it work?

It's rough gems, and I have plenty of them; however, he's still screaming about needing them.
There are other things he needs that I don't have; could these be related?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I tame a badger?
« on: July 19, 2011, 10:20:21 am »
I've built a kennel and have a metric ton of caged badgers, but when I go to tame one in the kennel, all that pops up is an empty list.
Am I doing something wrong?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / God damn badgers.
« on: July 13, 2011, 09:28:27 pm »
So, I'm prepped up for the big fight. My ballistae are manned, my troops are ready, my traps are armed...

I open the drawbridge to let the gobbos in to the line of traps. They emerge over the horizon, running like lemmings to their doom.

And them a pack of effing badgers run in and trip every single one of my cage traps.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So I dug into a cavern layer...
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:50:57 am »
I dug into a cavern layer with my main staircase, and now all of the rooms I have in the soil layer are growing cave moss and towercap.

This being dwarf fortress, I'd just like to confirm that these plants will not begin spewing some kind of flesh eating acid/emit toxins that will drive my dwarves mad/spontaneously combust.
