DF Gameplay Questions / Old Timer Back with Military Questions

Howdy all. After playing the hell out of the 2D and first 3D (2007) version of the game I really haven't played much since the big 2010 update. I am now getting back into the game again and have some questions about how the new military systems work. I have done a quick search here and have read the wiki but am not finding answers there.
I have dwarfs who are supposed to be in active squads, with orders, running around as idle civilians instead of going to their station/train. I have the minimum number of dwarfs set below the number in the squad; alerts and schedules all look fine. Is this just more Dwarven Free WillTM or am I doing something wrong?
Does anyone use training weapons? If so what is the best way? I just had my first ambush and all of my soldiers ran outside with their wooden weapons.
Also my dwarfs seem to grab weapons that are different than what they should based on their skills. That is mostly my fault because I had forgot to assign them the proper weapons, but it seems they should still default to what they know best.
Also is there any way to tie uniforms/equipment to schedules or alert status?

I didn't see any other threads that dealt with military only and I assume these are truly bugs.
I used an armor stand to create a barracks; I put a dorf into my one squad so he could train up a bit in case of an emergency. He would never stop training, though he would stop and eat, drink and sleep at appropriate times. I decommissioned the barracks with the armor stand, now the newly freed dorf will not take any job, there are a bunch he should be able to do. The game now does not recognize the armor stand, I cannot select it with the 'q' key to either re-create a barracks or un-build the armor stand.

Has anyone had any luck with getting dorfs to move things from one stockpile to another?
I had some seed bags I moved inside as soon as possible, once I had the seed room in my farm complex dug out I tried to move the seed bags there but the idle dorfs with proper labors activated stood around and stared at them until I removed the old stockpile from under the bags; they were then immediately moved.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bones and shells in stockpiles

Bones and shells don't seem to be under the refuse stockpile any more. Does any one know if they have been moved or if they have been left out completely?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / 3D World Visualization Tool

After a long break from the game I am starting a new fort. I have embarked on a pretty unique site and I am looking for a multiple z level world visualization tool. I have seen Stonesense but it seems to only show one z-level at a time.
It is a 6x6 site near a volcano with a chasm/pit in the same area and a small handful of narrow rock "spires" that shoot 25-30 z levels above the valley floor. I embarked right near the top of one of them.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

DF Gameplay Questions / Disappearing Civs

I had a location that showed all civs available on the embark screen, once I embarked the only civs that showed up on the civs screen were Dwarfs and Kobolds.
The location was a freezing tundra and I used the orcs mod, which has worked for me before.
Any ideas what happened?

I checked the world_sites_and_pops file for my current game and found this
This is the civ I am at war with, is there any chance they could bring the demon along with them on a siege? That would be fantastic.

DF Gameplay Questions / No one helping a wounded dwarf

I have a marksdwarf that got a yellow injury to his right Upper leg. He is inside the fort and accessible to everyone but no one is helping him get to a bed and he isn't moving himself. He has been stuck for at least a week and is getting very thirsty. I have idle dwarfs with the Health Care labor on, I have 5-6 unused, untasked buckets and 2 valid active water zones.
As you can see there is a very clear path to the dwarf. I even built a bed right on top of him but he still wont rest and the Nurses (dwarfs with only Health Care active) are ignoring him.
Can anyone think of a valid reason that he is being ignored or is he doomed to a bug?

Is there a maximum number of seeds that can go into a bag?
I have had more trouble in my current game keeping my seeds sorted properly than I have had in a long time. I have dwarfs walking past one seed bag in order to take seeds to empty bags in a Furniture Stockpile. A full bag is the only thing I can think of. :confused:

DF Gameplay Questions / Pumped water and a waterwheel

I am trying to use a waterwheel to run a millstone inside my fort. I have a windmill powered pump tower that pumps water from a brook up 3 z-levels to a moat which then feeds a channel in the millstone room. The water then flows back down through the fort, through a cistern and obsidian factory and finally back drains back outside the mountain.
The pumps are running smoothly and the cistern is empty with water flowing steadily to fill it but the Millstone keeps losing power and canceling all jobs. It runs fine for less than a minute then randomly dies. This is just because the water is pumped or can you think of another reason?

DF Gameplay Questions / Legendary Peasant

I had a peasant complete an artifact and become a legendary bonecrafter quite a while ago-I have had 2 other artifacts build since then. He is still listed as a peasant. What does it take for his profession to change so he is listed with the craftdwarves, not the peasants?

I have been getting spammed with these message since I have been playing this fort.

Is this a commonly known bug? I searched the forums and didn't find anything.
So my super fast super strong wrestlers can't be arsed to clean up after themselves but my cats are being sent to move barrels full of wine?

I haven't messed around with the military side of the game much and have a question, that I am sure will turn into more.
Is there any difference between a cap and a helm made of the same material, fe leather cap and leather helm?

DF Gameplay Questions / Corpses and coffins

One of my original 7 dwarfs died outside my fort. I built a coffin and designated it for burial. It is currently marked as " The Resting place of ...", the dead dwarf, but his rotten corpse has not been moved into the coffin even though 2 dwarfs have burial enabled and no other job. What have I done wrong? Is it the fact hat the corpse is rotten?
