DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ideas?
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:20:14 pm »
So, I've gotten to the point where I'm essentially safe (save some godawful syndrome or... well, that's about it). No goblin or beastman siege will be able to break my 40 weapon traps (3 discs each for self-nerfing) and even if they do either my 20 upright spears or 10 legendary axedwarves will.

So now, what do I do? I'm thinking it's megaproject time, but every time I try that, I end up completely butchering it, getting nothing cool out of it, and destroying my fortress in vain. So, I'm looking for more of a semi-megaproject, something that will take 1-2 in game years, not cause too much lag (FPS is starting to drop), but still be decently cool/dorfy. Not much gold or anything, no candy, so nothing metal. Anything else goes.

Thanks?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Gold. Lots of Gold.
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:33:07 pm »
So, DFProspector just revealed that my latest fortress is sitting on top of 18 thousand native gold ore. I plan to use this to its full potential, ideas?

Edit: I should mention I'm playing .31.25, so nothing involving vampires or minecarts (or the new stockpile system, if you were planning on suggesting something with that... you  never know what people can make interesting on this forum).

Edit2: Also, my dining hall is currently being dug to run through 2 (that I've discovered so far) veins, so there will be golden engraved floors and walls for the dining hall.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hello Again
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:25:57 am »
So, took a several month hiatus, want to get back into the game (haven't played since 3.2). Can anybody fill me in on the major updates, as well as details on vampires/minecarts (that the wiki doesn't have answers for).

Thanks :)

DF Modding / Dangerous animal
« on: November 11, 2011, 03:28:28 pm »
So I'm trying to mod in some more dangerous creatures, mainly just to learn more about modding (I'm kinda just starting). So, I was wondering what body parts to give to my animal (it lives on land) in order for it to be as potentially dangerous as possible. I don't care if they don't work together or make sense, this creature will be entirely fictional anyways.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Questions about waterfalls
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:01:08 pm »
So, I've finally decided to try making waterfalls, in a somewhat spectacular fashion, however to make it in truly spectacularly dorfy fashion, I must know, how far does water spread when just passing through a z-level? I.e. If something like this were to be built:
Code: [Select]
+++++
+++++
++o~~
+++++
+++++
+'s are walls, o is a hole, ~ is water ( a river or brook)
this is level z+2

level z+1:
Code: [Select]
+++++
+---+
+-o-+
+---+
+++++
-'s are floor

and level z
Code: [Select]
+++++
+++++
++---
+++++
+++++
the floor would be leading off
So, my question again, on level z+1, would the water get on the floor? and if so, how far out would I have to channel to make sure it didn't, if I worded this confusingly, please ask for elaboration instead of just ignoring it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Destined for DF
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:24:49 pm »
Today while reading the "You Are All Monsters Thread" I realized, yes I am a monster. After playing DF for a couple months that was already quite apparent. What occurred to me was just how long I've been a monster.
I now distinctly remember playing Sims 3 when I was 7 (yeah, I'm kinda young) and my only source of income for my  drop-out kids, unemployed parents family, was my pool in the backyard with a diving board and no ladder. I would invite anybody that walked by the house to go for a nice swim. They would jump in to swim, realize there was no ladder and would (not so) promptly drown. I could then sell their grave/urn that immediately popped up for 50 dollars. Looking back on this, I realize just how similar this was to so many of the day to day undertakings of DF players, hence my top z-level to lowest z-level tower (or at least to the layer right above magma) that I'm in the process of building, purely because I like watching kitten and puppy limbs fly all over the place. So, does anybody else feel like their oncoming sociopathy might have been present for a while before they even discovered DF?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ecstatic Dwarves
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:50:58 pm »
After losing my last 5 fortresses to slow army set up/ death by 1st ambush, I've decided to try a fortress with invasions off. To give myself a goal to make it so this is still a challenge (It wouldn't be dwarf fortress if it wasn't) I've decided to do everything in my power to keep all dwarves ecstatic at all times. This would include:
1. 11x11 bedrooms for everyone with all the furnishings required by mayors (bed, cabinet, 2 chests, weapon rack, armor stand)*
2. Entire z-level large dining hall, with all masterwork tables/chairs*
3. Constant supply of lavish meals.
4. Gold block paved halls, starting with main entrance hall.
5. Entire z-level large statue garden filled entirely with masterwork statues (with spaces to walk between them of course)

*: With waterfalls, I still need somebody to explain water physics in order to avoid flooding my fortress, as I'm not really looking for Fun in this one. I.e. if A waterfall is falling through a room, do I just need a one tile hole in the ceiling above a one tile wide hole in the floor? or does it spread out as it's falling? just a basic, how to make a waterfall guide would be great.

So any suggestions? Anything to add? I've already supplied the bedrooms to my first 3 waves, haven't completed the furnishings yet, my mason hasn't quite become legendary.

DF Gameplay Questions / Advanced world gen issues.
« on: September 15, 2011, 07:06:27 pm »
Everytime I do advanced world gen it comes up with the error message "No Civilizations Available" At first I thought it was something with the params I set, but I tried with some of the default ones, and with one I found elsewhere on the forums, here it is:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
So any troubleshooting tips? Girlinhat? Bless me with your wisdom?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fatal z-level drops?
« on: September 06, 2011, 06:35:37 pm »
So I decided that I'm going to make a tower with a mass pitting area right above my main gates, so during sieges I can drop captured goblins onto the attacking force. Not as a fighting force. They're going to die. I was wondering how tall I would need to make this tower in order for the fall to be guaranteed to kill them (Just regular goblins, I don't need it to kill titans or giants or anything)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf Therapist custom professions
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:48:26 am »
Sorry if the title is somewhat misleading, I couldn't really think of anything to call it. My question is how to have the custom professions you make in DT show in DF, as well as having those professions become their professions in DT (for sorting and whatnot). Help appreciated

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Posessed Miller
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:40:09 pm »
My miller is posessed. The wiki says she should be taking a craftsdwarfs workshop, but she's not taking any of them (I definitely have some) I'm still in my first year, so I don't want to just give up on her and let her go insane -> die. tips?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Finding volcano
« on: August 25, 2011, 11:43:02 pm »
So my map is littered with volcanoes, easily 50. I was looking for a good one to settle on, but when I found an area, I couldn't find the volcano on the local map. It was on the regional map, but there weren't any places that looked different than mountains and forests locally... I'm using a mayday graphics set, if anybody could help it would be amazing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / glitchy siege?
« on: August 25, 2011, 09:09:13 pm »
Nothing major, this is the second siege I've made it to. I stopped the first one with no issues, however this siege has been ongoing for the simple reason that the goblins aren't attacking. There are ~8 marksgoblins on giant bats and cave swallows, that have been sitting (or rather flying) in one corner for two seasons. my entire defense system is traps as of now, so I have no way of attacking them. It's not really a problem, I'm just worried the next wave of much needed migrants is going to appear near them, or they're going to attack me ambush style when I don't expect it. If anybody has a solution or knows if this is a glitch, that would be much appreciated. :)
