How do people have an adventure longer than 10 min with crossbowmen in existence?

The only way I can kill them is save-spam repeat getting near them, there is a 90% chance they one-shot before you even see them... If you can go the 3 squares to them then I can grab their crossbows out of their hands and beat them bloody with it. I haven't encountered any over long distances, I can't see a way of surviving it tbh...

I have full armor on (except I can't fit any caps) but the bolts always tear my brain on the first frame entering a room...

If I was playing properly and not saving/loading I would never last longer than the time it takes to meet one, does anyone else find this annoying?

EDIT: Also noticed, the current one can fire once per movement frame...

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves wont bury dead
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:52:26 am »
My squad killed a load of goblins that attacked, two of my dwarves died in the process but their bodies are still there. I know the area is accessible, as its the main corridor and has dwarves running up and down it all the time. The bodies aren't forbidden (but the clothes were, i changed it and they got picked up). They have now completely rotted and are skeletons - the miasma has gone and still no one moves them!

I have empty coffins spare, and the path to them is ok, orders "gather dead" is allowed (in both orders and orders-Forbidden).. Is there any other reason I am missing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Squad won't eat or drink
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:38:02 pm »
Ok, so I set up a squad - they trained for a bit then I set them to attack a monster, they managed to kill it with one casualty. Now they have grown more and more unhappy - I notice all have thoughts along the lines of "has complained of thirst recently" and "is hungry".

At the moment they are standing right next to a stockpile of food in my dining area...

Also, I have issued them a "move" or a "kill" command - how do I set them to just carry on with what they were doing (training) before the command? I have tried setting them to inactive, they just stand there starving!

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick question
« on: August 26, 2011, 06:44:10 am »
I can't seem to wiki/google the answer to this, and its relatively simple.

My first fortress died on account of the river freezing and the alcohol running out, my brewer wouldn't brew and I had no idea why. When the dwarfs started dying I saw a message (at the bottom of the screen) "Brewing cancelled, need Barrels" or something along those lines, except I only read as far as "Brewing cancelled, need" and it dissapeared...

A few times now I've got "X has been cancelled, need more Y" and not managed to catch the whole message so my question is: Is there any way to see recent messages?
