DF Modding / It was bound to happen; the rather underwhelming GUNPOWD
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:04:00 pm »
v1 is out! Download

How to use:

First, go to the smelter. combine 2 charcoal and 1 saltpeter to get gunpowder. combine gunpowder with any of the listed metals to get cartridges. combine  cartridges with any of the listed materials to get your base material for bullets. Forge this into bullets.

Forge a pistol (1h, can be used with a shield) or a musket (2h, more damaging). Humans can carry long rifles. These are too large for a dwarf to wield, but are capable of scoring more critical hits.

Draft someone and order him to take a crossbow. He should pick up that boomstick you just made.

Welcome to the gunpowder age! The craftsdwarf workshop will turn out bone and wood bullets for practice, in case your marksdwarves are too sober to shoot straight.

Alternately, come back with an adventurer, claim the goods, and play a gunslinger.

Issues:
-Bullets can be forged from normal metals. Likewise, bullet materials can be used to make crafts, goblets, workshops, etc. There's probably no workaround.
-Saltpeter is rare, so I've retained a "make saltpeter from any stone" command that was leftover from testing.
-No way to make dwarves differentiate between crossbows and firearms. Again probably can't be fixed now.

Todo:
Bismuth bullets
Siege Weaponry

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do all caravans come in fall?
« on: September 12, 2006, 12:26:00 pm »
Will I get all the caravans (dwarven, elven, human) in the fall? Or will each arrive in a different season?

Do the elves need a road to get to my depot, too? Are there any other special requirements for them?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Icy Heart: A Succession Game
« on: August 16, 2007, 04:16:00 pm »
In 1051, towards the dawning of what we now know as the Golden Age of Dwarfkind, a party of seven dwarves, vagabonds and criminals all, was exiled to the bottom of the world to serve the Test of the Fortress. They were given a meager amount of supplies and set out for a mountain known as the Glacial Tower of Clashes. The exiles chose Clashes because of its known volcanic activity; the warmth in the mountain's glowing heart was their only chance of survival...

Requirements

1.) Turns last for one year, starting and ending on the first of Spring.

2.) Do not mine the adamantine, release the pit demons, or bridge the magma without a general consensus of the former rulers.

3.) Do not use cheat utilities. Your save will be reverted and your spot will go to the next person on the list. Programs like LabourDF are fine.

Mandates

1.) Report anything noteworthy that happens.

2.) Population cap is 200. Don't drown nobles or immigrants.

3.) Post at least one update per season.

Demands

1.) Screenshots. 3-5 per update. More if you want to.

2.) Post in character. Nothing fancy is required.

The terrain is glacial with access to all civs:

We've started with no axes, on account of the treeless terrain:

Strike the Earth!

First update will be posted tomorrow. You can also signup if you want.

Signup list:

->1.) PresidentEvil
2.) Tarrasque
3.) Kylaer
4.) Gaulgath
5.) Veroule
6.) Short_dwarf
7.) RPB
8.) Metalax

DF Gameplay Questions / What order should I build in?
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:01:00 pm »
Alright, I've tried several fortresses thus far, and all of them have failed sometime before or during winter. I understand the basics... Get some stockpiles, build workshops... but I'm completely lost from there? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can screw pumps push water?
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:06:00 am »
For example: If I had one pumping into the bottom tile of a 1x1 vertical shaft, will the water rise?

Or do I need a pump on each level, etc.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cages question.
« on: August 16, 2007, 08:05:00 am »
Okay, I've got a bunch of goblins in cages. Can I just put them in a room and drown them, or do I have to let them out of the cages first?

DF Suggestions / Bedrolls and Supply Officers.
« on: September 27, 2006, 06:58:00 pm »
This could solve some of the problems with the military currently. First of all, you could designate a Supply Officer for a squad. This guy will solve problems with your squad leaving posts so they can have a drink/eat/whack off/whatever. He'll carry extra rations, water, bolts, etc. and pass them out to squaddies who run short. Also, if the squad runs out of something he doesn't have, HE will run off to get it for them.

Second, have an option for soldiers to carry bedrolls with them. These will add more encumberance, but they will prevent the trouble of squads trekking back and forth on account of their need to sleep. High quality ones could even give their users a happy thought eg. "He slept in a fine Bedroll lately"

DF Suggestions / Gold Thread
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:20:00 pm »
Alright, Wikipedia says that gold is ductile enough to be made into thread, cloth, and, presumably, socks. Though I imagine it wouldn't be very comfortable, we should be able to make gold cloth for our snooty nobles.

DF Suggestions / Changes to how breaks work.
« on: September 08, 2007, 12:00:00 pm »
One of my pet peeves is dwarves stopping vital jobs to buy shoes, throw parties, pet a nearby kitten, whatever. And I hate seeing them "on break," loitering without doing anything useful.

So, I propose we combine the two. Dwarves will go to parties and shops, collect their coins, and do their bitching at nobles when they are on break. They can also do this when they have absolutely nothing else to do.

What do you guys think?

DF General Discussion / When have you had absolutely insane luck?
« on: August 30, 2006, 02:25:00 pm »
I don't mean "Oh, I got a lot of shit from the caravan, and then 1 immigrant." I mean "hitting a silver deposit 6 tiles into the cave." Funny thing was, I was actually planning to start my excavations further north because there were more trees.
Also of note, another fortress' mason seized by  a fey mood made an artifact marble statue, and got legendary skill. In the first summer.

When have YOU had a ridiculously lucky thing happen?
