So, I've been a member of these forums for a couple of years now, and throughout that time, this has always been something that I've felt the GD board was missing.

We've got threads for things that upset us, things that enrage us, and all those precious things that bring of us joy. But what about all those countless occurrences in our lives that are so mundane and unimportant that they literally do not affect how we feel in any significant way? Ladies and gentlemen, at long last I bring you...

The Adventure Begins...
(Click above for added atmosphere)

The God-King gazed out over the many distant galaxies that the universe held, watching them in their silent cosmic beauty. The thought of what fate would befall them if he failed in his quest brought a deep sinking feeling to the core of his being, and he quickly pushed the thought from his mind. He refused to let himself even consider failure as a possibility. However, as much as he hated to admit it, he knew that if he truly wanted to be successful in this quest, he would not be able to do it alone. Not in his current form.

He already had several individuals in mind that he felt would be capable of assisting him, but also knew that he could not leave such essential decisions up to mere intuition. This was the reason behind the trial that would soon be taking place. He was confident that any beings who could participate in the trial and emerge not only alive, but victorious, would be more than worthy of helping him to prevent the catastrophic events of a future that should have never come to pass.

For the duration of the trial, he would gift the specially chosen individuals with the ability to harness power far beyond that of any normal mortal, in exchange for having the limits of their capabilities pushed far beyond what any normal mortal could withstand. Those that remained by the end of it would be rewarded with a place among the gods, and acceptance into the God-King's pantheon. All the preparations had already been made. Now all that was left to do, was decide who this first group of specially chosen individuals would be...

So, during one of my play sessions of the astounding game that is Dwarf Fortress, I had an epiphany, and my mind was suddenly flooded with ways to make this game immensely better in nearly every aspect. Seeing as it would be a crime not to inform everyone of these groundbreaking ideas, I have decided to make a thread about it:

First of all, get ready for this, how amazing it would be if our dwarves had wheelbarrows, pack animals, or were able to pick up MORE THAN ONE STACK/ITEM AT A TIME! It would make fortress management a world more efficient, greatly cutting down on hauling time.
But that's not all, just think about how cool it would be to see your dwarves hauling things in HD detail. That's right, I'm talking 3D DWARF FORTRESS! This would be an absolutely wondrous addition to the game. Because, let's face it, ASCII went out of style decades ago. How grand would it be to be able to SEE the discontent on a dwarf's face as he complains about the lack of chairs, or to see the lifelike texture of a ☼Kitten Tallow Roast☼. Just picture being able to witness a full 3D battle with your militia fighting against that rhythmically undulating blob of vomit!

Of course, full 3D support for Dwarf Fortress would obviously be quite demanding on any computer, especially considering DF's single-threaded nature. That's why I propose we make a petition demanding that ToadyOne begin to work exclusively on making Dwarf Fortress support MULTITHREADING! Anyone that wishes to sign this petition just has to say so in a reply. Now, I know what you're thinking, "King DZA, this is simply too many great suggestions for my brain to handle! I'm completely speechless as to how you managed to come up with such awe-inspiring ideas!" Well I'm not done yet!

As we all know, making Dwarf Fortress multithreaded would be a huge undertaking, this is why I also suggest that Toady HIRE OTHER PEOPLE TO HELP HIM! It would make the workload much more manageable and everything move along a lot faster in general. I'm honestly surprised Toady never thought of this himself, But I'm sure he will be forever grateful to me for such undoubtedly life changing advice.
Finally, since Toady and his work team will be occupied with the multithreading endeavor, I can see no better way to ensure that game itself continues to be worked on other than making the whole thing OPENSOURCE! That way, the community can take over working on features and bugfixes, while Toady can peacefully focus on managing his employees to complete the multithreading project. I mean, just look at the statistics and you'll see that making a game opensource normally solves roughly 100% of all its problems!

Am I fucking brilliant or what?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Erecting A New Fortress
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:38:56 am »
So, after a rather demoralizing event with my primary fortress, I decided to finally get around to trying out one of the newer bugfix releases. Before I was to gen up a new world, however, I wanted ensure that I restored the slightly more vulgar words that Toady had apparently removed from the game. As things just aren't the same when you don't have the opportunity to be attacked by the Incest of Spraying in the Assault of Rapes.
While I was restoring the languages to their former glory, I figured it would be a lovely chance to do something I've always wanted, and add a few words the races' languages. Adding more flavor, and giving the chance for more always welcomed RNG wackiness.

"Should I really be tampering with the ancient and sacred tongues of Dwarf Fortress' inhabitants?", I thought to myself, as I delved into the raws. I felt unsure about my decision the entire time after I had made my additions to the language files. At least, until it came time to name my new fortress. Needless to say, if I wasn't sure about my decision before...

Spoiler:  I am now. (click to show/hide)

The only question that remains is, how much maturity points do I lose for not only being entertained enough by this to make a thread about it, but also chuckling like a five-year-old every time it comes to mind?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / At Last, a Named Weapon!
« on: January 31, 2012, 01:38:54 am »
After many a month of DF play, I finally have it! My very first named weapon!

Spoiler: Anir Nanir (click to show/hide)

As much as I would love to create a thread solely for gloating about my own achievements, there's something that I find slightly perplexing...

Lokum, the owner of the steel axe, is a relatively new soldier compared to some of the fortress veterans. He came with the king, so couldn't have been around more than 1-3 years, and though his kill count is admirable, it is far from the highest in the fort. Because they were already legendary upon arrival, I have their squad train year round, as opposed to the alternating half year schedule the other squads have. But surely 1-3 years of year round training cannot add up to more than 10+ years of half year training. Makes me think randomness may play a bigger part in the naming process than I thought...

Anyway, just making sure this exceptional landmark in my Dwarf Fortress history is immortalized within the confines of this forum.

DF Gameplay Questions / This Happen Often?
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:48:49 am »
Just the other day, the elven caravan arrived at Charmwonder, a small secondary fortress of mine, when something I've never witnessed occurred:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Almost as soon as the elves arrived, a swarm of the drunken little buggers rushed out of the fortress, and began following them up the mountain, in order to steal thread to store in the recently dug out hospital. I'm just wondering how normal of an event this is, as this is the first time I've encountered it.

On a side note, this would make a good little story, as the militia commander had been resting in the hospital in critical condition for a while after a bad run-in with a goblin ambush. She shortly died of infection after the arrival of the caravan, so I find it heart warming to imagine that they were stealing hospital supplies in a futile effort to save the life of one of the fortress' best protectors.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Are My Dwarves Still Dwarven?
« on: January 07, 2012, 03:38:39 pm »
Recently, I've found myself making little journeys into the raws in order to make the nature of my little bearded ones more suited to my liking.

I wanted them to be more multicultural, so I gave them the ability to craft some weapons from other races. Such as daggers, scourges, scimitars, bows and arrows. I wanted them to be more respectful toward the bodies of other sentients, so I allowed them to devour the corpses, instead of just letting them sit in the refuse stockpile before being tossed into the magma pool, in the hopes having them be less wasteful, and lessening the bitter rivalry between them and the elves. And currently, I'm trying to get them to play chess, in order to strengthen their mental abilities.

While this alone might not be enough to stop them from being considered dwarven, it makes me wonder how far I could take it before the inhabitants of my dwarf fortresses can hardly be considered dwarves at all.

A poll made by Loud Whispers some time ago, revealed that the most important aspect of being of a dwarf(according the to community) is:
"Doing the most inefficient thing possible in the most inefficient way possible to achieve an unknown goal usually not even known by the dwarf performing such a task until the task is complete... And such the goal turns out to be useless, dangerous or both."

My stubbornness, along with my love of aesthetics, means that efficiency is certainly not a strong point of mine. So if that alone is what makes a dwarf dwarven, then the bearded little bastards have no need to worry about getting a race name change.
The other two highest voted option were "Reckless ingenuity", and most obviously, "Beards". Well, my dwarves still have their facial hair intact, and certainly a high level of ingenuity. However, I try to ensure that nearly all of my projects and endeavors end in with as little life lost as possible, so not too big on recklessness.

With that in mind, at what point will I have tweaked them so much, that they are no longer dwarves, but something else? What If I increase recklessness and become more inefficient, but remove their beards? what If I double their size? Remove alcohol dependency? Completely rewrite their ethics? When are my dwarves, no longer dwarven?

DF General Discussion / If You Could Choose One Thing
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:16:24 pm »
I was wondering, the other day, what one would change about DF, given the opportunity.
If, for some enigmatic reason, Toady One gave me the chance to alter/add any one thing about his glorious game, the likes of which would somehow magically go into effect immediately after my choice was made, what would it be?

Dwarves having the intelligence to put on clothes is an option, having my larger animals not inevitably starve to death without modding would be nice, higher FPS would be a pretty big priority...
I think the change I would most enjoy, however, would be to take Armok's place as the primary god of the entire game. Yeah, that would definitely be it.

So, now I wonder, what would you guys do, if given such a choice?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Siege of Gorerape(Pt. 2 posted)
« on: November 05, 2011, 03:16:22 am »
So, Gorerape was successfully defended from a decent sized siege not too long ago, not that this was the first good sized siege I've ever faced(though it was the first I've survived), or that it was the single greatest battle in history, but I thought it was a very interesting battle overall, and seeing how you all like a good battle story(well, I like them, so I'm assuming that you all do as well), I figured it was worth sharing.

I was considering putting this in the Stories and Community Games section, but I've noticed that it seems to be more for novel type stories, or DF inspired ones, whereas this is just a little reminiscence over a battle in Dwarf Mode, so it seemed a little more fitting here. Anyway:

Spoiler: A glimpse at Gorerape (click to show/hide)

Gorerape as a whole is still very much incomplete. I've been working on constructing the walls of the DeathMaze, and planned to start adding the more complex traps and dangers to it later. Because of this, the only trap defenses I had at the time were some scattered cage traps between the first(innermost) and second wall. Since the DeathMaze is still in its early stages, the militia has been the primary defense of the fort.
The dwarven caravan had just arrived, which was carrying many important items I requested, all was going well before the vile force of darkness appeared. From the southwest corner, upon on the plateau, with a squad of bowgoblins behind her, stood Nguslu Smoxspuatu(Secretflies), goblin general. She was accompanied by another squad of bowgoblins coming from the west not too far from her. They were lead by elite crossbowgoblin Atu Xamaozud(Chillruthless).

I had all the three of my three soldier marksdwarf squads stationed at the edges of the hill that the center keep is being built on, I then prepared to go into lockdown. Unfortunately the merchants had not yet made it into the walls of the DeathMaze, so I couldn't yet do that. There are two entryways through the outermost wall of the DeathMaze(west and east), the merchants had almost all made their way through the east entrance. Even more unfortunately, approaching them from the east was yet another bowgoblin squad, these led by Osta Smunstungon(Liegrowth), goblin macelord.

With Nguslu, Atu, and their squads getting closer, I closed the western entryway, and turned my attention back toward the merchants. Most of them made it in, with only three of their guards lagging behind. As much as I wanted to keep the entryway open for just a little longer, Osta and his squad were quickly catching up. The floodgate dropped down, leaving macedwarf Urdim Sengkel(Ringmetals), macedwarf Asmel Mebzuthasiz(Oarflash), and speardwarf Ushrir Rakustmafol(Tombchambers) alone and outnumbered. Seconds later, Osta and his squad engaged them. A wave of goblin arrows showered over the trio, most of them breaking upon impact with the maze wall, the few that hit were deflected as three charged forth.

Dodging and blocking arrows, Asmel and Ushrir jabbed and bashed their way through the bowgoblins, While Urdim locked into combat with Osta while taking on a few bowgoblins herself. Before long the squad was shattered, Osta and most of his soldiers lay dead on the grass, while the few remaining scattered and ran off the map, the three guards stood victorious and without any serious injury, but that small victory was not the end of the siege. To my dismay, I saw a horde of trolls coming from the north(hadn't noticed them on the map before this point), making their way toward the western entrance, nearly two dozen of them. And following slowly behind was a squad of swordsgoblins, lead by a goblin spearmaster(name unknown).
A few of Nguslu and Atu's squad members had used a ramp to climb atop the southern part of the outermost maze wall, and engaged in ranged combat with a marksdwarf squad, the markdwarves held their position and got in a few good shots. If the goblins hadn't been busy aiming for cavy boars and my war giraffe(still alive, by the way), the marksdwarves would have no doubt taken much more damage, thankfully all three survived. The trolls gathered and busted down the western floodgate. Nguslu, Atu, and most of their squad members rush in with the troll horde, while the spearmaster and his(or her) squad of swordgoblins set their sights on the trio of guards.

Nguslu and her small army of rangers and trolls marched toward the northern part of the second maze wall, where a ramp would give them access the the top of the wall. Seeing the oncoming Swordsgoblin squad, Urdim, Ushrir, and Asmel took the offensive and charged straight at them, the two forces collided near the northeast corner of the DeathMaze. They fought well, the swordsgoblins began to fall, sadly, while Ushrir and Asmel were distracted, the spearmaster snuck up on them, and killed them both. Urdim, now severely overwhelmed and outnumbered began to flee, the spearmaster and his(or her) squad pursued.
The trolls made it up the ramp first, and headed along the wall as marksdwarves opened fire(one got a headshot), eventually stopping on the eastern section. Bowgoblins were now lining much of the northern section of the second wall, and began to fire upon the two marksdwarf squads, who return the favor, projectiles fly everywhere. I ordered the other marksdwarf squad to join their brethren, as two marksdwarves had already fallen unconscious due to their wounds.

I turned my attention back to Urdim, most of her body was now in the red, yet she continued to run. Eventually, the spearmaster caught up with her as well, and ended her life just like he(or she) ended her kin's. The spearmaster and his(or her) squad now slowly walked toward the western entryway to join the fight.
Most of the merchants had made it safely into the center of the DeathMaze, but one of their other guards, swordsdwarf Bim Limarducim(translation unknown), fell behind. He walked through the corridor between the innermost and the second wall, right under the exchange of bolts and arrows that was still going on, immediately attracting the attention of the bowgoblins above, They filled him with a plethora of arrows, and he died in moments. On the bright side, it gave the marksdwarves a minute or two of relief.

With bowgoblins controlling the northern section of the wall, trolls controlling the east, the spearmaster and his(or her) squad creeping ever closer(they were really taking their time), and my marksdwarves starting to run out of ammo, I had to make a choice. I could either call the marksdwarves back(abandoning the unconscious ones), and lockdown the remaining parts of the DeathMaze, in the hopes that I could hold them back with the melee dwarves when they made their way to the center, or I could send the melee dwarves out into the open, through the corridor of death that Bim was struck down in and toward a ramp to the far eastern part of the second wall, where they would have to fight through a wall of trolls, avoid the onslaught of arrows that would be directed at them, and combat the goblins and their leaders face to face.
So I mobilized two of my six melee squads...

Eh, that's enough for now. Not much point in writing down the whole thing if people don't want to see it. If you like it and want to hear the rest, let me know and I'll finish it up later. If not, then...I won't I guess.

DF Gameplay Questions / A Magma-Related Inquiry
« on: November 03, 2011, 07:32:41 pm »
As my fortress grows larger, and it becomes more and more difficult to keep a decent supply of logs, I've decided to finally incorporate magma into my forging industry. This will be my first time playing around with the stuff, so it should be most interesting, and lucky for me, there is a pool of it about 20 z-levels below.

However, I've been torn between whether or not I should put the effort into building a pump stack. Should I choose to, it will be my first time playing around with pumps as well. There is a nice pillar of rock that I could dig to the magma pool through, so placement isn't a problem.
What worries me is, I've heard that pump stacks significantly drop FPS, which is something I'm having trouble with already(hovers right below 20, if I'm lucky).

I would prefer to move the magma at least 10 levels up, but if the FPS drop is really that bad, I'd be willing to simply dig out a nice hole and set up shop in the depths. So tell me, would a pump stack be worth it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your Fortress Anthem
« on: October 21, 2011, 02:16:48 pm »
While battling Necro910 and his relentless pony forces a while back, i had a realization. That, once completed, Aztec Two Step will be the the perfect theme song for Gorerape the Massive Malicious Maze of Death. The sound of immense torment and hate echoing throughout the halls of the DeathMaze, and the towering center keep, as the walls are coated with the blood of my opponents, and dwarves rush about to reset traps and pull levers would seem incredibly fitting.

This got me thinking about what the anthem might be for the fortresses of other overseers. So, imagine, if you will, what piece of music would be the most fitting as the official anthem for your current fortress, past fortress, or your fortresses in general, and why.
I look forward to your replies. They should be most interesting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Enemy Military tactics
« on: September 24, 2011, 07:02:23 pm »
Alright, i have a question. but Before i get right to that, i feel i should give a rundown of what happened to inspire my inquiry:

So, i was just tending to my fort, doing my best to avoid the inevitable end. When i'm told a goblin snatcher has been spotted. Feeling overconfident after fending off their last siege without any dwarven casualties, i decided to send my ragtag melee squad after the bugger.
Unsurprisingly, they failed to catch up to it, with only one hammerdwarf(lacking a warhammer, i should add)managing to make it out of the fort before it was long gone. Just then, i get a message that there is a goblin ambush, coming from the opposite flank the snatcher arrived from.

Call in the civilians, lift the drawbridge, ready the troops, ect. I then realize my warhammerless hammerdwarf is caught outside. I notice the ambush has come with only copper pikes and a bow. Pride still flowing through my veins, i decide to send out my entire military to take them out(yep, all ten of them). It is only after my dwarves gallantly charge into battle that i receive news of another ambush, this one of goblin swordsman. They show up right next to my marksdwarves who are distracted with the first ambush, and then...
I'll end it there. Needless to say, results weren't ideal. Ended up having to cheat by reverting back to my last save(undwarf-like, i know)and still ended up with two or three deaths on my part.

My question is, are invaders capable of advanced tactics, such as sending scouts, organized ambushes and whatnot, or was it just a horrible coincidence that the snatcher was around right before the ambush, and the swordgoblins were lagging behind a bit?
