Einsteinian Roulette / Mission 21 On Trial: No Smart Subtitle
« on: January 19, 2016, 02:54:35 pm »
Milno arrived at the hangar and met with Miyamoto there to wait for the M21 team members. "Hey." he said unenthusiastically, sitting atop one of the shuttles but having some difficulty staying in place thanks to the absence of artificial gravity. Even then, that kind of thing was the least of his worries now. They'd have to evaluate mission twenty-one and see if Maurice's claims of guilt were true or just exaggerations.

ROGUE TRADER THREAD CURRENTLY HOLDING: SHIP VERSUS SHIP TEST COMBAT

The news spread like wildfire in a single day across the system's docks and space station, most likely the work of a vain captain or first mate: the Abyss Plunderer, a Raider from an independent group of pirates hailing from the Hazeroth Abyss, managed to chase down, board and ransack an unassuming trading vessel that secretly carried a small fortune in exquisite alien jewels jealously locked in unmarked adamantine crates. The plunder is enough to guarantee luxuries for the pirate crew and is also a stiff hit to the credibility of the Burkham dynasty's company, responsible for the transportation of the cargo, even more than it is to their coffers. With their small cargo holds half-full with the exotic goods stolen from the defenseless trader, it is just a matter of time before the pirates leave the system to evade any pursuit by the sluggish Imperial patrols.

However, an enterprising Rogue Trader has a different idea. He and his seneschal were in the system discreetly overseeing the purchase of a transport ship modified to give grief to any pirates who decided to fight it, and that was when they caught wind of the news. With a nose for profit and glory, it didn't take a moment until they had pieced together a plan in order to gain wealth from others' tragedy. The organization that had been originally transporting the valuable crystals was contacted and a deal was struck: the cargo would be retrieved and in exchange not only would the Rogue Trader be handsomely rewarded, they would also gain an advantageous partnership for future deals.

With their only combat-capable ship - a frigate - in the shipyard for repairs after extended combat against other raiders, the Burkham family relented and accepted the deal. It had the added benefit that establishing a partnership meant they claim it already existed prior to the event, therefore saving face. The ink on the parchment hadn't dried and the seneschal was already at work, discreetly spreading rumors about a transport carrying compact and valuable cargo about to leave the docks and whose captain had decided to leave the system after catching wind of the most recent and daring deeds of piracy. With the bait being laid with the right amount of care by the seneschal, his employer then began searching for capable men and women to crew the Bounty of Scintilla while his main crew prepared his flagship on the rendezvous point the Bounty is supposed to head to as soon as it finishes its mission.

Who are you? You are one of the many capable men and women who were found and quickly hired by the Rogue Trader, given such a good opportunity at quick riches and some of the spotlight it was hard to decline. Now you are part of the Bounty of Scintilla's skilled crew, having recently left the docks and preparing to hopefully draw the Abyss Plunderer into your trap by feigning weakness while plotting a Warp jump. If the pirates' greed wins over common sense, it is up to you to capitalize on their mistakes and emerge victorious.

What this is about: This is a Play-by-Post test combat I am going to run using the rules of the Rogue Trader RPG game, by Fantasy Flight Games, set in the Warhammer 40k setting. Following the link is advised if you didn't understand a word. Why am I doing that? Because starting next week I'm going to play in a campaign of said system as, well, the Rogue Trader. Since I've never taken part in space combat and due to its apparent messiness, I've decided to create this test thread in order to get acquainted with it. I might draw very simple maps for combat, and I intend to get the test started until tomorrow's evening.
What am I looking for: A crew for the test combat, of course. I will give preference to those who'd join the roll20 game but can't due to their schedule, though anyone - even those who are joining the campaign I'm part of (they could use the experience) - can apply. I want to update at least once a day after the thread gets started, but knowing myself it might not happen - in any case I'd like volunteers who won't disappear as soon as combat starts. This is as much of a tutorial for me as it is to you, but I figured it could be made interesting. The Rogue Trader will be controlled by me (since that's the role I want to get acquainted to). The focus of this test is space combat, therefore a Seneschal or Missionary character isn't necessary, though they can surely be useful for some Extended Actions - if you don't mind being the equivalent of the crew's/PCs cheerleader - while two or maybe even three Void-masters with different special abilities wouldn't be amiss. For anyone who doesn't have the books (Core rulebook and Into the Storm are the ones for chargen) but is interested in applying, you might PM me or adwarf for assistance with the material. Please fill the sheet below if you are interested, and I'll answer questions when I see them.

Leaping Puma: Panzergrenadiere Trials

It is year 1944 and Germany is losing the war. There is no avoiding a truth that only becomes clearer to any commander not blinded by the wrath and passion of a would-be messiah of the people. Forced to fight a losing war on both sides after the Eastern Front was all but lost after brutal fighting and the Allied disembark on Normandy's beaches provided them with yet another concern, the Reich is weakening and the Axis is crumbling with it. Casualties and constant conflict from all sides means lack of manpower is one of the most pressing issues for the Germans' war effort, followed closely by the loss of petrol-producing territory that risk forcing the swift and mobile Heer to stop dead on its tracks. The first issue is addressed by giving weapons to recruits either too young or too old to fight, while the second one forces the Panzer divisions to put high importance in capturing Allied fuel supplies. Some amidst the High Command still hang onto the hope of crushing the Western forces for a reason or another; either to have leverage for an armistice or dreaming about winning the war after focusing their forces solely on the Eastern front. The ambitions, dreams and hopes of officers notwithstanding, something must be done before they suffer yet another humiliating defeat in such a major conflict.

It is a time for desperate measures. And so begins Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein, Operation Watch on the Rhine.

....

24 December 1944, outskirts of Bastogne, Belgium. Elements of the 15th Panzergrenadier Division join Panzer Lehr's 901st Regiment and the 26th Volksgrenadier Division. An influx of walking Panzertruppen, followed by soldiers either inside armored vehicles or sitting on the hull or back of several half-tracks, arrives at the scene. The group is a mix of older men, baby-faced recruits and weary veterans from either the Italian campaign or the Eastern front. They do not have much time to rest before orders are relayed and a series of attacks are ordered, with the reconnaissance teams sent far ahead of the main force in order to pinpoint enemy positions and numbers as well as eliminate any enemy scouting forces.

You are part of that group. At least one of you probably hoped to become a Panzer ace, destroying opposition inside a Panther or Tiger; others may be excitable young recruits with far less experience than willingness to fight; a few may even be personnel from a different branch of the Wehrmacht, left "jobless" as Germany lost space in sea and air, and finally, it's likely some of you wouldn't even like to be fighting in the war, though for one reason or another you are found yourself drawn into it. You have been recently designated as the crew of a Sd.Kfz. 234/2 Schwerer Panzerspähwagen "Puma", a fairly light and fast armored car transferred from the 2nd Panzer Division. Its speed means the vehicle in your hands is a great asset for scouting, heavy reconnaissance assignments and eliminating weak opposition, but having thin armor will force you to pick your fights. Try and survive during Germany's ambitious offensive in the Ardennes.

About: This game is actually the test run for an idea I had. Since the original idea would require a lot of commitment and reasonably sturdy mechanics, and since my schedule is messed up, I decided to get this started to develop the system and correct any inefficiencies before deciding whether I can make the leap to the original idea.

As you may have noticed, this is a WWII RtD. Though I'm not too much of a history buff, I will try to keep things mostly believable. Even if a few pieces do not fit history perfectly, I will strive to keep things interesting and fun as they should be. Selection will not be First Come First Serve. I will analyze the applications and choose the ones that fit better.

There is a minimum of three players for the game to start - the Commander, Gunner & Driver trio - with Support soldiers numbering at a maximum of two or three depending on the applications. The radio operator/secondary driver role, responsible for steering the four rear wheels when needed, will be filled by a NPC unless someone feels like taking it. In that case, the Driver occupation's equipment and abilities apply.

Roll To Dodge / The Good Earth - An Apothecary RtD - Day Two

This game is being Co-GMed by both me and Skyrunner. Yeah. Moving on.

The Good Earth - An Apothecary RtD

In the small region of Ceres, there lies a city, known as Erista. It is a renowned business center, home to many masters of brewing and concoting mysterious potions and elixirs, said to cure afflictions, grant benedictions, break traditions and make you rhyme badly from time to time.

In such a flourishing place, where small business grow in the nick of a few months into highly-profitable establishments, many people try to learn how to deal with the herbs and their effects, ultimately becoming a highly-respected apothecary. Many people who already possess patches of land inside and around Erista know full-well about it, and make money by renting said patches to enterprising people, young and old, many of foreign lands.

The amount of patch-renters is somewhat limited, but not exactly lacking, which provides a good balance in the market. Problems arise when there is also the need for labs when the despossessed beginner apothecaries lack even the most basic of equipment, being forced once again to rent what is needed for them to start learning their new source of income.

After a while searching for a place to install yourselves, your small group finally found a reasonable place and invested part of your coins into renting patches where to cultivate your herbs and try to make coin.

Each one of you has 50 silver coins to spend in herbs to start going and 3 patches of land to cultivate; the rent for the patches is collected every month. Either you succeed or you fall, you're going to either pay the owner, and if you amass enough cash, buy your own patches.

The rest goes this way: 10 for each patch, totalizing 30 coins, and 30 for the lab you use, making it 60 coins per month to be paid.

Taking six players, a small bio (no longer than three lines) is necessary and affects whether you enter or not the game.

Roll To Dodge / The -------- of the Asylum - Dead or Alive
« on: March 17, 2012, 10:28:29 pm »
Due to me angsting over wanting to write something and with Arcane Steel lacking a player post, I decided I might as well start a new RTD to run while I also run Arcane Steel. Yes, I have lot of free time. Why, no, this is not medieval, high-fantasy. Or so I think. Yes, this style of recruiting is a blatant copy of Gatleos. This RTD is not supposed to last for years. It may last for days. Or weeks. Or months.

Requisites: I'll be updating this at least once every day unless I die. If all of you send me the actions earlier, you get it earlier. Do not send those to me within two days of my last post and you are out.

Note: If something that will make you stay out of the internet for some time happens (or is bound to happen) warn me and I'll hold the RTD for some time.

The first six to PM me an action get the spots. They shall be answered with a message stating their letter. The letter between A and F will be chosen by dice roll. After these six, I may need some more, so do not get too worried about being left out. Part of the remaining shall be employed for other things.

The -------- of the Asylum

You wake up. You do not know why you were sleeping. Why? Hmm? Who are you anyway? You can hardly remember, but there is something wrong here. Yes, sure there is. You are wearing that dresslike thing people put on when they are hospitalized. Are you in a hospital? Maybe, you sure are lying on something that looks like an hospital bed. You scan the area. You discover through transparent curtains that there are five more such as you. Each of the beds you lie on has a letter. From A to F. A, B, C, D, E, F. You can not recognize them, but then again, you can not even recognize yourself. You just can't remember, simple as that. The walls are supposed to be white, but they seem yellow. Yellow, and partly covered with grime. There is some soft song playing in the background. It sounds pleasant. What. What. You suddenly feel an urgent desire to -do- something.

Arcane Steel

Well, after lurking for some time and only managing to get into two RTDs (I missed most others), I decided to GM one of my own. It is my first one, and it may as well be an utter and complete failure. I swear I'll try and keep this thing updated, but expect a) laziness on weekends, b) random forgetfulness, c) not so bad grammar and vocabulary (English is not my native language and I kind of derp sometimes) and d) Tiruin trying to join in, probably as a celtic warrior (named Tyrin something) he joined, but as a dragoon with a different name. Meh.
Of course, the setup may be sluggish, for fine-tuning reasons.

The Game

The following happened in a world (still planet Earth, though) where some historical events happened differently. Modernization, for an instance, came a bit quicker and even more so for Japan. These historical differences plus some things that (I guess that) do not exist in our plane (magic) moved the gears of History in different ways.

The waitlist will exist for the case both battle buddies fall. Battle buddies meaning the wizard-knight couple. If only one falls, the remaining will keep on and must honor the fallen. At any !!COST!!.

You can put fluff in your sheet, just don't overdo it. Remember you are young and have accomplished absolutely nothing so far.

ALSO! A note on abilities. If you try anything feasible in Real Life, like taunting or throwing sand in the enemies' eyes (not cool), those will be rolled for success.

For now what I just posted is mostly for the sign up list and interest check. I may decide to simplify or modify some parts later. Tell me what you think about it.
Do not be surprised if I end up tweaking things mid-play, because I may do it. By joining this you forsake your souls to me.
I was also thinking about rolling I will be rolling for weapon, armor and relic. If you roll 5 or 6 for one of these categories, you get a nice heirloom from your family. They will already be named according to their nature/your coat of arms and they may also have titles (which you can pile up with your achievements).

Curses / Older and Newer Versions Badassery.
« on: September 25, 2011, 01:02:29 am »
I have started to play LCS just recently, but I would really like to point out a thing: Having characters that are more faithful to reality (as in not being able to single-handedly cut down SWAT teams and slice tanks in half with a katana), I certainly miss that kind of action. My apologies if I am being annoying, but it would be nice if there were two versions (or an in-game built-in option); one as it is now, fairly realistic, and the other...well...with high-level badass leaders with trenchcoats cutting tanks and the Devil himself in half.
My point is that being realistic is a challenge on its own (also it is VERY satisfying to -crawl- your bloody way towards your enemies' demise), but having leaders with Charles Atlas Superpowers on your team can be fun as well, especially because the game was not so easy even when they were around...Eating SWAT teams for breakfast and going samurai (or ninja) on people.
