General Discussion / bitcoin still isnt a real currency is it?
« on: April 04, 2013, 08:28:49 am »
When we look at the price increase it seems lots of people have stoped considering it worthless...
So once more I will ask to those that previously told me that it was utter BS, now that the gold rush is taking place and governments start talking about regulating it(maybe the best proof that this trend should not be dismissed with a handwave), do you still think that bitcoins are "no real money"?

DF General Discussion / MOVED: Bitcoins, e-currency or just fancy crap?
« on: November 25, 2012, 07:48:51 pm »
This topic has been moved to General discussion because I want to be nice.

I haven't the faintest idea of what the link's gonna look like though.

General Discussion / Bitcoins, e-currency or just fancy crap?
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:28:56 pm »
I launched a thread about bitcoins and got quite a bit of reactions about them. Originally I asked wether or not toady should accept bitcoins donations. I got a lot of answers and now I'm doubting...
As MrWiggles pointed out bitcoins might not be whatever I wanted them to be (not a real quote, I think there was "fable" in it but cant recall correctly). I wont hide that I am a big TOR and Bitcoin fan, because the former gives anonimity and the latter is the electronic equivalent of cash. But eh, IT is not my field (just a hobbie) and there are much more knowledgeable people around here, so I ask them this question, and humbly ask to anyone in the community with any experience with bitcoins to share about it.

from my point of view, new bitcoins are mined by using a trial and error function until it returns a hash having precise specifications, these specifications determines how hard it is to mine new bitcoins. Since it's trial and error some may be lucky but most miners would just have to spend a lot of electricity and CPU cycles to mine new bitcoins (hence miner pools wich appeared when one couldnt make a profit mining bitcoins without a big investment or a specific botnet).

so CPU cycles AND electricity are what gives bitcoins values. Someone said toady could use BJS (what's that?) or wow gold.

from my point of view (again, so if anyone want some good nub bashing time they can knock themselves out) BJS (whatever they are, correct me if they are some kind of shells used as a currency) or WoW gold arent "real" currency : nothing guarantee their values.

To put it that way : governments mint currencies, what keep citizen from going to the government and asking a "refund" (give me gold for this coins I dont trust anymore) is the trust they put in it. that's why they call it Fiat Money.

so here you have a government making money out of thin air (printing paper money I mean, not fiddling with  interest rates to make money more valuable)
there you have a lot of people making money

in the first case the government decide when and how they are going to feed the money to the system without breaking it
in the second case a mathematical formula decide how much money will be made until miners "run out" of bitcoins...

I've seen a fair share of corrupt governments but never saw a corrupt mathematical formula. But, again, I dont know much about mathematics.

so, Bitcoins, e-currency or just fancy crap? (or anything between)

I dreamed I was a wealthy man, still young, I dreamed I had a custom built overclocked desktop, with a blue water cooling system that circulated around my bedroom before going in and out of the computer case, I had an enormous aquarium shaped to look like a dwarf head with red stroboscopic lights going out of the eyes and a fountain streaming out of its mouth... I was playing dwarf fortress when I fell into the screen and ran through the wires, going around the whole range of ip addresses. Here and there ip cameras shaped as chained kittens watched over the entrance of my home, sending short bursts of data to a system of sentry guns that stood vigilantly, protecting the sleep of my loved ones with kevlar crossbows loaded with depleted uranium quarrels... I went down and down to the cellar and there I saw... I saw a fortress, first I saw a beowulf cluster , then after traveling to the switch I fell again in what felt to be a bottomless pit. It was not falling as much as flying. There was no movement in the darkness, no wind, no noise... nothing. but I knew. I knew I was going somewhere... then, the light. I came crashing down, fell through the canopy of a rain forest, flocks of birds watched me fall then tried to attack me. I was there. A world full of life, with beasts, war, prophecies, disasters but also births, miracles and love. I saw crazed dwarves write thousands of pages of poetry on mugs or goblin bone earrings. I saw that and so much more that I cant recall. I walked through mazes, talked with ageless beings. Played dice with clowns, bet on the outcome of arena fights, drank and feasted in brightly lit halls, saw them crumble as ages passed and time drifted by. I saw most wonderful things, I saw what could be, what should be, I saw things I'd rather not, things that cant be unseen and even if they are but the shadow of a memory that's not even mine; they now keep me from enjoying simpler pleasures.

My point being, if dwarf fortress was to ever be adapted to parallel computing (and maybe multiplayer gaming), how many bay12ers would be ok to join a big cycle-scavenging based program to run a persistent df world?

I know this is a wild hypothesis but eh, let's roll! who would feel like joining?

I for one would gladly invest in a beowulf cluster just for that :D
(ok maybe not, I'd do some bitcoin mining too)

(apologies for spelling/grammar mistakes, english isnt my first language)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Slabs
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:10:30 am »
Ok, after a bunch of cancelations (creature occupying site)I never had before I'm starting to get pissed, the fort is going well in spite of having no metal whatsoever in defense mod, now I have a violent ghost  and I cant engrave any slab because "no slab available"... My legendary mason churns out masterwork slabs and my legendary engravers dont want to engrave them. In the bug tracker the bug is "resolved" maybe it is the mod?
some help would be appreciated

DF General Discussion / Bay12 Hive mind (formerly Toady's botnet)
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:22:08 pm »
Lately I was reading some code, when it struck me... If toady was an evil individual he could have backdoored all the systems running dwarf fortress to create some giant botnet since the code isnt open source no one can tell... I dismissed the thought with a mental wave of the hand (baaah, he isnt the kind of individual to do this, and someone would have noticed) then it struck me (yes again) that he has backdoored... Our minds!
think about it, hasnt been df running in your mind like a daemon? Sometime you think about it you dont know why, things IRL remind you of it... And when you are idle (asleep) its still running : look at the dream topics! He didnt even bother with a rootkit, his plan is so perfect... Lately I saw interest arise in subjects such as the Bay12 space program (which I should have applied to since I can count some hours on orbiter traveling to other planets, mastering the slingshot process, the reentry and that kind of thing, brainfreeze if you read me and it isnt too late, I would gladly join) and members flock around these projects, isnt that another proof that there is some kind of "globalbay12 brain", does it think by itself? or is there a puppetmaster... Or should I say a puppettoadmaster?

So what is he planning to do with his bots? when (if he didnt already) will he set them in motion? and how...

(maybe the proof that I am truely infected is that I have no problem with that)...

Life Advice / about to move the boot partition
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:59:12 am »
When I decided to try linux (mint, debian)in dual boot with win7 I thought I would get bored pretty fast and keeping it on a small partition would be a good idea. Now I completely filled my 10gb partition, I dont use windows anymore and I need more space. I fiddled around with gparted, now all I need to extend my / partition is to move the partition containing the grub. When I started to do it, gparted displayed that my system would not boot anymore if I moved the partition. what should I do? copy it to where I need it (I doubt it would do it) then delete the original, move it or... since in sudo I cant launch grub (please install grub legacy) maybe I should reinstall grub?
help gladly accepted :)

DF General Discussion / Mersenne twister in df
« on: May 25, 2012, 03:02:58 pm »
I read that df uses a mersenne twister, after reading the wikipedia article I cant help but admit that :

1)I dont understand how it works (please someone explain me)
2) how the heck is it used in dwarf fortress??? I must be broad and dumb but I cant see...

I created a minecart track from my warehouse to my trade depot,
first : I cant get the dwarves to push it, they will take it then bring it to the next stop not using the tracks at all. I have an excalamation mark on my stops saying "set track dir" but whatever I do (meaning setting the option to "push east when fully loaded with desired good" and "take from stockpile 2") I cant get the little buggers to push the damned cart along the tracks... what am I doing wrong?

I am thinking about starting a microscope game in dwarf fortress setting
Spoiler: wtf is microscope (click to show/hide)

I am looking for players, from 2 to 4, I would suggest using prezi to keep track of what's going on.

the summarizing line could be "the ebb and flow of dwarven, goblin and elven civilization as humanity grows stronger and more assertive"

anyone interested?

Spoiler: scenes rules (click to show/hide)

you can not change the past nor the future, but you can change how we assume things happened!
you shape the world describing what your character can see, but you also have to describe how he reacts to it.
If you can?t explain how your character perceived what you?re describing,
you can?t establish it as true. It can only be opinion.
Spoiler: rulebook (click to show/hide)

to wrap it up:
1)state the question
2)set the stage (what do we already know from the history, where is the scene physically taking place? what is going on?
3)Choose characters : list banned and required characters (max 2 each/player). All player pick character (counterclockwise, starting to the right of the scene creator) choose a character that helps you answer the question

last notes :1)roleplay what your character does and thinks, if someone tries to do something to your character, you describe the outcome
2) shape the world by describing what your character perceives and how they react to it
3) introduce and play secondary characters as needed

Spoiler:  when you disagree (click to show/hide)

here is my last fort, I am thinking about how I can make a cart track system blending efficiently in the layout. please do comment on anything you think I did the wrong way, or anything that could be made more efficient. I'm still looking for ideas but I apart from the main "half of the main stairway will be constructed tracks" I dont know...

I kept running through the tundra, but the thing was behind me, a huge wall of frozen water, I cant go back, I do not seem to be able to go forward anymore, time and space are warped...
edit I do not know how I can upload a save or a pic, there also is a huuuuge fps drop (27, even worse than with my 16 year old fort in dwarf mode)

tried to go back north, now fps drop to 1 XD
