DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Supplying the surfacers with magma?
« on: May 02, 2012, 05:47:17 pm »
Dear fellow forumers, I need your help. The situation is most dire.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, over 200 of goblins and trolls laid siege on me. They also brought their civilization master (who is a demon) too, so I guess they really want us to die this time.

So my question is - how do I flood the surface world with magma? Would this simple method be sufficient to pump magma up Z levels? I actually never had the chance to test that, but it looks as I have no choice now.

Have you got any tips/ideas beside the wiki wisdom? Or should I make another approach and deal with the siege differently?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Strand extractor strange mood?
« on: April 13, 2012, 07:24:18 pm »
I know it may sound stupid, but my strand extractor got possessed and won't claim any workshop. I thought he'll just go to the nearest craftsdwarf's workshop, but he didn't. I have pretty much any other type of workshop, but he doesn't want to claim any of them. Any ideas what should I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Every single body part has yellow wounds
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:56:58 pm »
So, I was checking on a miner with a broken arm that was lying in a hospital recovering from an giant olm incident. Then I accidentally (v)iewed a nearby dwarf and discovered that every of her body part is wounded in yellow, except the upper body which is fine and throat, both eyes and both eyelids which are dark yellow/brown.

No battle reports, no scars, no injuries or medical history, nothing about her preference about working outdoors (i thought it may be a sunburn from cave adaptation). First I thought vampire and sun exposure, but she's happily drinking a barrel of alcohol.

Any ideas what might have caused that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Undead cats are the new danger room?
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:10:06 pm »
A dead cat decided to come back to life as a "profane smoke husk". It killed one dog, while the other three and three unarmed dwarves are fighting against it. After a few in-game days of wrestling, I've got three legendary fighters and wreslers, but they still can't kill it, even after injuring it a lot. I don't know why their fighting and wrestling skill skyrocketed like that.  :o

DF Gameplay Questions / What does glazing do?
« on: January 02, 2012, 09:45:25 am »
I've glazed a few statues, but I don't see the effect. They change colour and it uses a bar of ash. But is there any other effect? Like value increase or something?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Merchants wandering into caverns?
« on: January 01, 2012, 10:35:01 pm »
I was playing in fortress mode and everything went fine. I just made it to the second year and my first human caravan arrived, after the dwarven and elven ones. We traded and things went smooth.

While they were preparing to leave, I breached the caverns because I was in need of silk desperately. A weaver fell into a strange mood and needed it.

After collecting some of the silk and spinning it into a cloth, he claimed it and started constructing it. I zoomed to the little loom I placed in the caverns in order to collect the silk only to find the merchant dragging his horse across the caverns. A guard was following them too. I went trough the announcements and saw that they embarked on their journey, but why into the caverns? They ventured into the dark parts I didn't explore yet, I don't know what happened to them. I'll send a dwarf to explore it as soon as I can.

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't know if it's a known bug, I tried searching for it, but didn't find anything like this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Healing with saltwater?
« on: November 18, 2011, 01:00:56 pm »
On of my unlucky woodcutters got mauled to death by a giant badger. He even had an iron axe and actually knew how to use it, but reading the combat report I saw that it jumped on him, charging, and got him by surprise. The poor guy didn't even have a chance to defend himself, and managed to retaliate, and miss, only once, a few seconds before his death. That was the last message, beside him bleeding to death.

I'm also building a cistern as I have only saltwater. My masons got assaulted by the badgers, but noone has been killed, miraculously.

My rather decent militia (only a few waves of migrants, some were quite good soldiers). Proceed to chase them away. They kill them, and only one dwarf gets her head cut and later torn open, but she survived without any internal injuries.

Another wave of badgers appears and manages to injure many of my soldiers. They all have only one or two cuts that aren't that horrible, but they all get bedridden and must drink only water, that is salty. One of them luckily healed on his own, but his body is still dented. He is incredibly quick to heal, though.

I don't know if I can finish the cistern in time, and I'd hate losing them to such minor cuts, especially while having about three great doctors and lots of cloth and thread (drowned the elven traders :P)

The water in the cavern's pools are also salty.  :( Do I have any options besides finishing the cistern?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bees on ice?
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:12:53 pm »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Playing with Genesis, but I don't think it affects this. Just started a fort and saw a colony of bumblebees on a frozen murky pool. What will happen to them when the water thaws? Will they drown and be destroyed? Or will they randomly swim? The site has a cold climate, so I'll probably have to wait a bit to find out.

Could this be a possible bug?

Also, the colourful graphics of DF prove that ASCII graphics can also be aesthetically pleasing.  :P
