Creative Projects / Miniature Casting
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:11:37 pm »
Hi Guys.

I'm going to enter into the world of miniature casting. My end goal is to field a little army of Space Marines that I can put on my shelf and show how geeky I truly am, without having to dish out $350 to do it. Here is what I am going in equipped with:

1) A .pdf about casting miniatures that I found in a link on 1d4chan. It's pretty good. Blows away what I could find on Google. Lucky find.

2) My girlfriend's dad casts miniatures all the time. He's a big wargaming buff. I think he might be too advanced for me to handle, though, since he apparently casts pewter models.

Does anybody here have any knowledge on this sort of thing? Maybe you've done it before?

Otherwise, you can just look in here to find pictures of what I make. I'll post all my failures to make it truly entertaining.

I'm going to start with casting a 6-sided die. They seem like they're shaped in the easiest possible way, and I've got so many of them as to make them completely expendable. I'll let you know how it goes once I get started.

A friend of mine made this web series with a bunch of other friends of mine for his undergraduate thesis. I thought I'd share.

Other Games / PC Games for my Girlfriend and I
« on: April 16, 2013, 05:17:16 pm »
My girlfriend and I like to play on our computers. What are some good games for two? Co-op, versus, it doesn't matter! Genre? Doesn't matter! Style? Doesn't matter! I won't even list what we already play because our influences literally do not matter!

Though these threads, all across the internet, typically fill up with Minecraft, so I'll let you know that we already play it.

Man, what a great film.

Too bad everything I see reminds me of vaginas and torture now, though.

General Discussion / Ubisoft Uses Signiant for its Managed File Transfer
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:04:50 pm »
http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/signiant-is-pleased-count-game-developer-ubisoft-as-file-transfer-solution-customer-1615993.htm

Ubisoft has just become a customer of Signiant, one of many vendors who sell Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions, which make sending massive files really fast and easy. Like, really fast. Sending a 30gb file can take hours using FTP, but minutes using MFT.

How do you guys think this will affect the gaming industry? Turn around times are suddenly shortened immensely in a way most people don't necessarily think about. It's possible this might help developers hit their release dates AND provide on quality.

Thoughts?

(PS: I'm a marketing writer for an MFT vendor (not Signiant) now. AMA)

It's in the "Happy" thread, but it deserves its own topic.

Check it out. This site is confusing to me, but for best results, CTRL + F "Original Article", read all of that, and THEN go the top and start following Updates.

What can we learn from Christoforo? Where does Avenger itself fit into all of this? (I'll pop in this opinion from a mostly unrelated company) Does anybody want to devil's advocate for Christoforo (Good luck!)

I knew I had gotten desperate when I started searching Kijiji for cats with which to fight the menace.

It became ever more clear when I paused and looked at what I had just typed into google:

Other Games / Organized Crime RPG
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:40:35 pm »
Hello all,

I'm trying to find a pen and paper RPG dealing with organized crime, a subject touched upon in our media through shows like the Sopranos and movies like the Godfather. I've had no luck, so maybe somebody else has heard of one (or, better yet, played one!). There's a bonus if it covers some level of police investigation into crimes the characters may commit, even in a relatively abstract way, so as to encourage subtletly.

Conversely, an RPG based around police and detective work would actually work equally well.

General Discussion / Great Trolling
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:17:57 pm »
I stumbled across it today.

This guy, playing things completely straight, repeatedly harrasses GoG.com because there is a mod being used in their release of Lords of Magic which, in turn, has parts of a mod he once released contained inside of it. In one e-mail, he claims his name is protected by copyright law, and requests the Head of Business Development over at GoG stop using it in his e-mails.

I figured I'd share, since it's the funniest thing I have seen all week.

EDIT: It's even better if you poke around some of the other posts there, or read the bar across the top. The guy offers people a pirated copy of the game, but is threatening to sue GoG.com for stealing his mod.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/europe/at-least-80-killed-in-norway-shooting-police-say/article2106259/

Earlier today, when I first heard the news and nobody was sure what had really happened (and the death toll at the camp was estimated at about 'ten'), one thing was clear. The shooter was a tall blond male. Naturally, speculation continued to be directed at an Al Qaeda orchestrated plot, and the strangely unintellectual comment sections of all news media websites were rife with people lamenting the West's lax attitude on Muslims and how we should all close our borders. You can generally tell which ones the evil Muslims are because of their blond hair.

There is no tl;dr, because you should really take the time out of your day to look up the news and not rely on us here on the forum. Also, I provided a link.

Discuss.

(Yeah, Cap'n'tastic, I ended the post with "Discuss". Suck it.)

Other Games / Iron Seed
« on: June 20, 2011, 04:07:01 am »
For years, literally years, I have been trying to figure out Iron Seed. The game appeals to me for some reason. I even worked on part of the Wikipedia page on it five or six years ago.

The thing is, I can't understand what the fuck is actually going on. Can somebody point me to documentation that describes the actual backstory for me? It seems like they just toss random words at you like 'Psiborg', and spend a lot of time implying that your crew is made up of computer program clones of real people, who might also have never had bodies but some of them did.

I wanted to ask at ironseed.com, but they cancelled forum registrations for some reason.

It's like it's a two decade long troll.

As if to emphasize the idea that this game makes no sense, typing in 'Psiborg Iron Seed' in Google gets one page of hits, this five minute old post being at the top.

General Discussion / Move over Fox News...

Canada has trumped the United States once again:

Sun News Interview with Margie Gillis, incredibly influential interpretive dancer and choreographer.

Some background: Sun News is a new channel based around news from a Right-of-Centre perspective. The Toronto Sun, where this channel gets its name is a tabloid (as all newspapers called 'The Sun' are). The interviewer is Krista Erickson, an incredibly impoverished individual who has to struggle and claw for every .3 cents in annual income she has (calculations are my own, based on figures she provided and Canada's approximate 30 million population).

I haven't lawl'd so hard in so long.

Anybody else kind of glad that they did away with this whole subplot before it got too terrible?

Also, I just got the BSG: The Board Game: Exodus Expansion. It's pretty great.
