What I mean by that is, what things do you prioritize and in what order do you do them after embarking in your new area? what do you find is the most efficient way or order to do things so that the basic needs of the fortress are covered?

I understand it very likely doesn't matter so much what order you do things as you probably get it all under wraps by the time you're attacked or well before it.

I'm simply curious.

I do things in this order.

1. Dig out main hallway
2. 3x3 stairs spanning 8-12 z levels
3. Dig out area for farm and set it up
4. Dig out medium sized workshop rooms and set up the workshops
5. A few levels down dig out an area for the meeting hall, dormitory and food stockpile and set that all up.
6. Then I start attempting to dig out a huge area for my stockpiles. I think I make them too large.
7. Place 6-9 cage traps at the start of my main entrance.
8. Build a barracks near my dormitory and enlist a dwarf or two.
9. Dig down 5 or 6 levels and start carving out many small rooms for the new arrivals when they come.
10. Start digging for gems, ore and flux.

That's pretty much how I go about it.

What about you?

DF Gameplay Questions / How exactly do you claim a cavern?
« on: January 16, 2012, 06:16:58 am »
By claim I mean make it safe to use as a tree farm etc.

If I walled off every entrance ( minus the entrance with a door from my stairwell ) to the large flat area of the cavern I'd like to use is it considered safe?

Can shit that will kill my dwarves still spawn in that sealed off area?

I had a forgotten beast spawn in my caves a few years back before I breached the cavern, is there still a chance one might spawn in my little area?

Thanks.

If I limit my population to say 50-70. And let sieges happen at 50 dwarfs. Will the ambushes/sieges always have weak-ish enemies?

I mean, if I kept increasing my wealth even with 50 dwarves, would the frequency and difficulty of enemy attacks still increase?

I hope this question makes sense

DF Gameplay Questions / How often is Dwarf Fortress updated?

Just out of curiosity, I'm aware there is only two? people working on this game

Hi, some questions about the military. And one about a megabeast that is lurking in the caverns below my fortress.

I got lucky and have 1 artifact weapon, shield and a boot.

1. Champions and heroes, they can use artifacts right? is there a way to give these to one of my choice? I've got 4 at the moment and one is my militia commander. I'd like for him to use them if he can.

2. How do I make all my dwarfs stay indoors? there is no menu to make all civilians stay indoors anymore right? I have to use burrows instead? I think I know how to work with alerts and burrows and what not, but I'm curious if I'm missing the option somehow.

3. I've assigned 250 wooden bolts for training T and 250 iron bolts for combat C on my marksdwarf squad. They will only use the wooden for training and in actual combat will use the iron with these options enabled right?

4. In regards to training and sparring. I've got about 5 very well trained military dwarfs in charge of my squads. Now, the recruits that are put into the squads with absolutly no combat skills, do they only watch demonstrations before they have enough skill to actually sparr? is sparring superior to watching demonstrations?

5. I should put all my untrained dwarfs into a squad with one of my heroes/well trained dwarfs?

( I don't want to use the trick with the spike traps )

6. I think I recall reading somewhere that bronze is the best for shields? something about it being very dense or something? is there truth to this? I have the means and resources to make a very large amount of steel though.

7. The higher up a marksdwarf is in a tower, the lower his accuracy/damage?

8. Hammerdwarfs. As far as I can see they are very powerful. All my squads minus the marksdwarfs are hammer users. Is it work investing in a squad that uses a different type of weapon? or each half of a squad uses a different type?

9. Bridges. When placing one, I can only make it 10 or so tiles long. If I place another connected to it, will it actually be connected? or will I need to assign them both to seperate levers/use double the mechanisms on one lever?

10. MEGABEAST.

Alright, titan, forgotten beast, megabeast. Whatever it's called. It's in a cavern I've completely sealed off. It's made of STEEL.

STEEL. It's got a stinger and some other nasty sounding parts, but the bit about it being made of metal is what is worrying me.

A quarter of my military has steel weapons and armor, the rest is equipped with a mixture of iron, copper and bronze. Common sense tells me that hitting something very very large made COMPLETELY out of metal with metal isn't going to go super well.

So, I'm going to considering causing a cave in to kill it. I'm going to try figure it out on my own, but the general idea is to what? dig out a long passage, place supports along the passage, connect them to levers, channel out parts above it.

Breach the cavern and somehow lure the beast into my passage? then blow out the supports one by one while it makes its way down the hall? or blow them all out at once?

Maybe position my military around a bend past the passage if the collapses don't kill it?

DF Gameplay Questions / How can I dump refuse into magma?
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:43:39 am »
My piles have a ridiculous amount of refuse that I want to get rid of.

I made a magma pit to dump goblins into, but I can't seem to figure out how to dump my refuse into the magma.

Do I designate a refuse pile over a tile of magma? put a floor hatch over it? make it a pit or garbage dump? I can't figure it out.

DF Gameplay Questions / When do you start getting ambushed?
« on: January 10, 2012, 07:50:28 am »
I feel like I've accidently screwed up a file or something. I'm 3 years into my new fortress and not a single goblin in sight.

For most of you who have been playing this game far longer than me, how many months/seasons/years into a new fortress on average does it take for you to start getting ambushes?

Am I just getting unlucky or something? 3 years

DF Gameplay Questions / Volcano fortress, pros and cons? how do I do it?
« on: January 09, 2012, 10:22:32 pm »
I just noticed my world has four volcanos on it. I'd like to try my hand at making a fortress on one of them soon.

No trees or plants near them, and very hot and they don't have much difference between each other in regards to trees, plants, and metals.  At a quick glance it seems very difficult to build a fortress on one.

So, what are the pros and cons of embarking on one?

Obviously there is a extreme amount of magma available, so smelting ores and forging items out of metal would be a big thing.

With practically no trees or plants, how does one even start a fortress on a volcano? embark with enough wood to make some beds and other essential items requiring wood?

Would caravans be the main source of wood for this kind of fortress?

How does the high temperature affect the dwarfs and the fortress in general?

How difficult is it to establish the basic needs for a fortress on a volcano on a scale of 1-10?

I haven't had one in two years now for some reason, it's getting boring.

And I'd like to have to actually need my hospital and doctors for once.

The only thing I know of is embarking in 'evil' ? areas is rather dangerous, but what does that mean? dangerous wildlife? not actually more frequent ambushes/thieves/snatchers/sieges?

I want to lose my fortress in a battle, not by accidently flooding it with magma or murdering all my dwarfs.

I'd prefer not to modify any files at the moment, I just want more combat. So do some areas make ambushes more frequent? embarking near a goblin fortress or something?

I think I read there is a mod that sort of does something like what I'm wanting?

I'm still pretty inexperienced, but I want to lose my fortress in a year or three, I think embarking somewhere very dangerous would help me learn better. How should I go about this?

I want to have some real fun already!

Just out of curiosity, I've been relying on traps for my past few fortresses. But I've been sending my military the past 5-6 ambushes getting no kills or captures with my traps. And while I haven't checked my militarys skills before they start crushing skulls, I swear they gain some good levels each time.

So, is sending my military out on the early, easy ambushes everytime a good idea to get them some good training?

Hello.

One of my previous fortresses had like 100 levels I could dig down into I think, my current one... it's like 50 or 60? no ores to make iron too.

The one before this on the same world had about the same.

If I generate a new world might it have more?

I've been embarking with a few hens and a rooster with some laying boxes. They went to the boxes and laid some eggs when I placed them, but they don't seem to be going near them at the moment. Just hanging around my meeting hall, how can I get them to lay?

Whooooops. I got ambushed by 7 goblins, most of them where wrestlers with leather armor, my hammerdwarf had bronze and a steel warhammer and some decent combat skills so I wanted to test how powerful he was.

I pressed the kill button, picked the option to make a rectangle around the goblins. He zipped on out, two got caught in some cages.

He crushed the goblins. But then he just started killing everything, chasing around my animals and then killing my dwarfs.

I think I'm clearly missing something very obvious I did... so, what did I do lol?

He wasn't insane, when I looked at what he was doing by pressing u it either said "Cannot follow order" or  "-Insert training thing blah blah-"

What does it mean when a military dwarf has the "Cannot follow order" thing near their name?

Blah, feel like I'm ruining my fortresses before I even get started lol.

What are the best goods to make for trading? I think I see mugs mentioned a lot, not as the best thing to make, but mentioned often when people talk about trading and what not.

So, mugs or rock crafts? I've been doing rock crafts

I think I'd just learned a lot of the basics of dwarf fortress and was moving on to some more advanced stuff ( trying to pump magma into some tunnels for magma smelters. Then all hell broke loose.

This is my 4th fortress, I had 83 dwarfs. I had like 40 assorted weapon and cage traps lining the long corridor into my fortress along with some fortifications that had some marksdwarfs posted near them.

It seemed like they just kept coming, I caught a good amount of them in the cages, but they started getting mowed up by the weapon traps after a while. They eventually got near the last couple weapon traps and another group didn't come in for a minute or so.

It looked like 3 more squads, or groups whatever you call them came out of nowhere, slaughtered my 10 hammerdwarfs and 5 marksdwarfs. Then proceeded to murder every single dwarf besides one that was miles underground at the time.

I think he is going insane.

Lol, well I'm kind of looking forward to reclaiming that fortress. Feels like a bit of a disaster, but a learning experience nevertheless.

Anywho, could anyone offer some general tips or advice on what they find is a good idea to do when starting a new fortress?

When a good time to start creating the military is? I relied on traps up till this point, figured out the military thing but they where not well trained or equiped enough.
