DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Necromancy and you

So I finally have a character who I'm rping as lik a wandering knight or something. So along my journey, I find and kill an entire tower, grab ALL the books and now my questions

  • How do I know which book is "the one"? I actually want to avoid becoming a necromancer
  • I left a good amount of undead at the tower, will they attack nearby towns or is this considered dealing with the threat?

It happens far to often, youre trying to make the final blow to put down that bandit leader and your companion snatches up the kill. So when you go to brag, youre bragging about your companions kill. Do you still get any recognition for the kill?

How long does everyone actually search through caves (in terms of z-lvl) before you think you have wiped out all the kobolds or otherwise that inhabit the cave? Not including the naked mole dogs.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / What do I do?

So I understand its like a sand-box adventure mode, but with the quest system pretty much replaced by a "rumor" system. What am I supposed to do? Do I really need to get my RP on to have a lot of fun with adventure mode? Also, maybe after a few questions are answered I can figure it out for myself..How do I properly do "quests" such as "Thieving scum have a hamlet called meadbread". Do I just go in and kill every kobold in the hamlet? Also how do I properly tell anyone that I saved the hamlet?

Having a lot of fun taking a break from fortress mode, but Im just so confused.

I left my laptop on, the cat jumped on the keyboard and now the font is all "normal" and not blocky and the dwarves have beards instead of normal circular dwarves. I cant figure out how to go back to default DF

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress Ideas

Ive been playing a 9yr above ground fort and I think its time to move on to something else. I dont want to abandon and I have a few questions.

  • If I retire will the fortress still "run" on its own. Im assuming they wont continue to farm and make food but will my dwarves still be there living there lives?
  • If I reclaim, everything will be like it was? (nicknames, buildings, nobles, etc.?)
  • I cant seem to find the wikipage for fortress ideas, the page I got the idea from was the "spartan 300" or some such if anyone knows what Im talking about a link would be appreciated, thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Armor Stockpile

Basically Im having an issue getting my dwarves to stockpile clothing. It seems to be made at either the leather works/clothiers shop and it sits in the workshop. I have an armor stockpile set to take all materials but metal, every other option is highlighted. I dont like to use bins with my stockpiles.. is that the problem?

So im trying to colonize the first cavern.a Theres been a lot of activity, from trogs and molemarians, to FB. So slowly (20ish FPS), Ive been working on the first cavern layer making it accessible to my dwarves. I'm trying to cross a lake, build a bridge [b ][g], then some walls along the side of it to keep my little drunks from falling in. I designate the walls and go to a different task and while im not watching I get an announcement "A part of the cavern has collapsed". Now I have 11 dwarves at the bottom of the lake. No idea how this could of happened. There was no mining going on just building walls[b ][C][w]. Only thing I can think of is because there was only support on one side of the bridge and nothing underneath the actual bridge, maybe it "collapsed" but then it regained its composure? The bridge is still there btw.

Im sure we've been over this plenty of times, but I am confused on what the wiki says. I have a vamp duchy (duchy/manager) walled up in a jail cell. If I were to to get rid of him, would I eventually get a new duchy? Same goes for king/queen.

I have two taverns. One near my fortress entrance, open to everyone, one underground for residents and civilians. Now the tavern near my entrance is alright in size. The only problem is that nearly everyone who goes in, ends up chilling in the booze stockpile. I made a 9x10 or so area connected to the tavern for more dance floor but only a few actually want to enjoy the floor space. Any one else encounter this problem and fixed it?

Ive been having trouble with keeping my captain of the guard happy. Every fortress I play, my captain will always eventually start throwing tantrums. When reading his recent thoughts I will see something along the lines of "annoyed by the lack of cages and chains". Obviously I need more cages/chains but how much? Normally my jails are six rooms with a copper chain in each, that's not enough. Is there a specific place I need to build them, connected with his actual room, or can I just make cage traps near my fortress entrance? Should I make a rather large zoo?

So as the subject states, my dwarves will eat in the dining room. They will also eat in my jail cells that have a table and chair. I've tried to use the [D]
  • to make the path restricted and direct them to the dining room. This really isnt a huge problem or anything but it is kind of annoying to me. Is there any way to make them prefer the "cafeteria"?

This is pretty much a basic yes or no im hoping but is there a way to extract adamantine strands exclusively at a craftdwarfs shop? How im doing it is making sure only strand extractors can use shop A and trying to avoid "j>m>rock crafts" for the moment as I will still see "rock crafts" appearing in these shops

So This is my first attempt at pumping magma to my fort, infact.. ive never manually moved water either but anyways, im assuming using a wooden corkscrew and wooden pipe section WONT work. Since rock is not available for these items, what is the cheapest source? Or what do you usually make your pipe/screw out of?
