Other Games / Kickstarter projects anyone?
« on: August 12, 2013, 10:16:07 pm »
Due to the lack of sandbox building games and having gone through seemingly everything on the market, I've found myself on kickstarter, throwing a few dollars at projects when I can. TUG, Frontiers and Stonehearth were all ones that I've thrown money at.

Here's a current one that reminded me of this game. It'll never be anywhere near as complex as this game but the controls and graphics look infinitely better than towns, gnomoria etc. Has anyone found anything on kickstarter worth mentioning that fits this genre?

DF Gameplay Questions / Newb trying to play with advanced parameters
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:31:23 pm »
I'm trying to make a new world with parameters that will help with my FPS problem, but I can't seem to make it work... Worlds keep getting rejected for one reason or another.
I'd like to have:
-As much good as I possibly can (last time I played, there were no good plants as a bug so I'm eager to try those.)
-little to no evil
-very small caverns
Maybe I should eliminate the caverns and the bottom part altogether just to make sure there is no sneaky running water anywhere.

Can someone help me set what the parameters would be that would actually work? :) Thank you in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Has "lag of death" been fixed?
« on: June 14, 2013, 07:18:53 pm »
I really want to play this game again so badly. But every single one of my fortresses slows to a crawl and eventually dies. To the point where my BF suspects I have melted the GPU of my last two computers playing this game.
There was a problem by having items in your fortress. Even if they were deleted or traded away, this contributed to the death lag because the items still existed in the memory somewhere until the game simply could not be played. Pathing was also an issue. The more stones you dug out, the more possible paths for your dwarves to take and the computer calculated every single one until eventually you ran out of processing power. Being near any water also made the fortress die faster.

Has this been fixed? Was it only an issue with the texture packs? I'll learn ascii if it means I can play the game again.

DF Gameplay Questions / Good aligned embark sites- not all that good?
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:59:48 pm »
So I've tried a number of embark sites that are good and I have yet to find the signature good plants: Feather trees and sunberries. Do these just not exist for whatever reason or are they further restricted by a different climate?

DF Gameplay Questions / Terraforming the outside
« on: March 14, 2012, 11:51:59 am »
So I was making some lovely walls for protection when I ran into some open space left by an annoying puddle. I built a floor over it, but now I can't build a wall on top of that floor. Can I use a bucket brigade to turn the floor into something I can build the wall over? If so, how would I do that? I've never found the command.

DF Gameplay Questions / Magma furnace
« on: March 04, 2012, 10:08:09 am »
Apologies as I realize this is a vary newbish question, but the few videos I found on youtube and the wiki were not up to my satisfaction. (One was just building next it the magma and I need to channel mine)

I have managed to build a well several times successfully but as my new site has magma in it, I would like to build a furnace. Is there any type of layout that is superior? (The wiki mentions holes and dwarves falling in) Do I build this in the same manner as my well? With channels, a diagonal for pressure and floodgates.

Is it possible to find an embark location with clay and no soil?

DF Gameplay Questions / Playing with advanced world gen
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:27:19 pm »
I've very sorry for this newbish question, but I'm trying to tweak a world into that 'perfect one' and the parameters get a little confusing... even with the wiki x.x

I like high elevations because there is more levels to dig into. The wiki says "Raising the minimum elevation can, for example, make it impossible for oceans to exist."
umm... more land less ocean. Where is the downside? For that matter, why have mountains if they are uninhabitable?

I'm trying to have very small caverns. I've lost a third fortress due to underground caverns and I'm wondering if disabling the underground water is the way to go rather than making the caverns small. (it's the underground water that is killing my FPS) Am I still able to make a well from a river if I do this?

DF Gameplay Questions / FPS Death :(
« on: February 29, 2012, 09:30:06 pm »
So, I'm sitting at roughly 100 dwarves on one map and am running along at 98 FPS and have gotten up to a mayor.

My newest fortress though, I have 86 dwarves, no mayor and the FPS has been slowly getting worse despite not really doing anything significant. When it hit 30 FPS, I just turned on fastdwarf and kept playing. It worked at a relatively normal pace but now that I have breached the lower caves my FPS is now 3 and unplayable. Is there any way to fix this? I've killed off all animals except for 5 pets and the 2 food pile cats and that seems to have done absolutely nothing. Both maps do have a running river, but I'm not sure what else affects it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Alter name file systen
« on: February 18, 2012, 12:19:44 pm »
Is there a way to alter the naming system?
It's getting a bit tedious clicking on random strings of letters in a save game screen hoping that I pick the right fortress I want to play. It would be nice if I could name the save game file something sensible so I'm not having to sit through 5 *savegame* screens.

So, I had my animals in a pen, but they would chew each other's legs off and all kinds of fun stuff.

I made more pens, but after waiting several seasons for rain to clean up the entire pen of blood and gore, I realized I am in a zone that never rains.
I found the wonderful little program that runs each time DF runs to find out it had a 'clean all' option. GREAT! Now my fortress is amazing!

But I wanted to plant more fields .... and I found the function titled 'immolate'. I figured I could set all he little useless shrubs on fire and end up with a nice clean field for planting with none of those useless shrubs! :D YAY! How could this possibly go wrong!?

....My entire map filled with smoke and ash. Killed all my plants, one of my dwarves lost an artifact causing a tantrum spiral... half of my fortress is dead or missing because I thought they would be gathering stone instead of wood...

I had just went through assigning 127 dwarves individual rooms last night.  :'(

I'm guessing my entire fortress will eventually go under, but what about all the ash and now lack of plants and grass on the entire map? Does the ash go away? Do I get grass back?

DF Gameplay Questions / Larger maps=more lag, same space?
« on: February 17, 2012, 12:26:37 pm »
I started a new fortress in a steep cliff that has seemingly everything I could ever want on it-gold, silver, obsidian, copper, various red metals etc. I extended the range to be a 5x5 square thinking I would be able to have more land.

Except I didn't get more floor space to work with at all. Is there no benefit at all to making your embark area smaller or larger?

Here's where my cursor stops on the map, effectively locking me out of the river I wanted and half the working space of the cliff I wanted. In order to use this I may need to spend a few seasons just strip mining the thing so I have an area to work with. :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Is there a way to find where I am on the map?
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:36:18 am »
Hi! New player here. I'm wondering where I am on the map and if there's a way to find the same location again on a new play through.

See, I have a save game that is currently in this mountain made of gold. Trouble is, it was on my first game and I now have very specific layouts I was to use and well, first fortresses aren't always that great. I miss that mountain of gold! Sadly I didn't put a note down before I started, so I don't want to abandon the fortress if there's no way to find the location again. Is there a way to see my coordinates on the current map?
