DF Modding / Modding Healing and other Health issues

So I've come to know that nails can stay infected for all eternity and that infections don't really heal, nor does nervous damage.

Alas, I interested to know how mod the raws in order to cull these issues. Additionally, are there any other issues that I should be aware of that I could handle at the same time?

So.. got a bunch of guys in the hostipal after last siege and most of them have infection in various locations, despite having soap and clean water around.

Anyways, I'm not particularly aware how the infection actually work, have somebody made any science on this?

So I was wondering if anyone here is starting to get kinda tired with having bazillion different, let's say, loincloths after a siege due to them being of different material? Even worse as there are another bunch of different items with the same thing. So tedious..

So I've been reading these topics about Mass Pitting not working properly, and was thinking what's the real status on that one..

Have a couple of hundred goblins now caged and I really don't want to let even a fraction of these various goblin lords running amok.

DF Gameplay Questions / Design Suggestion for this Entrance

So my fellow dwarves,

My fortress is based on a cape surrounded by water from three edges, with only one connection to the mainland.

I'm trying to make a layered entrance to my aboveground fort and my plan is to channel a large moat from the lake on the right, and separate the lower part of the map from the upper part. The channel will run next to the wall on the right side.

The channel will continue downwards from the small pool in the middle next to diagonal wall, and will run down all the way to the bottom of map,  with the main bridge to my fortress.


Now then, I'm quite unsure on how to design the moat which runs from left to right with the following in mind:
 - Having caravan access, but with ambushes (traps) in mind
 - Have a watchtower next to the 3x3 bridge/floor/ground entry

On the very right side of the upper wall, I will dig an entry which will lead to an underground trap corridor (2x wide) runnign under the main wall, if that changes the design (leading probably to a raising bridge over the large moat, so that ambushes/sieges can be channelled to the corridor once detected/announced).

Might even make drowning chamber out of it later.

So I was wondering.. if I would build a floor over an area of lake (water) tiles, all the way to the edge of the map, would the caravans be forced to spawn there if that is the only available way to the fort?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Killing Dwarves - Feeling Bad

Untill now I've been 'attached' to my dwarves whenever I play, meaning that I make my outmost in order to protect all of them, from the children to the grippled to those totally 'trash' dwarves.

I've been wondering now that I've hit the pop cap of 90.. that there are a lot of no doers in the fort, which have so poor stats that they aren't really suited for anything at all - nor do they have any skills that are valuable - or atleast skilled in something..

.. which kinda leads me to think about getting rid of the unwanted folk in order to clear more room for more quality immigrants.

.. which makes me feel a bad person :D

So I was wondering, do you guys have similar concerns as to these feelings, seeing that they are only ASCII letters..

DF Gameplay Questions / Preventing Drowning in Danger Rooms

A quick question, now that I started my danger room I've drowned three recruits already and was wondering how to prevent this.

Basically I've go a 10L x 3W training room, witht the tiles next to the wall channeled out and filled with 7/7 water.


EDIT: After changing the water dept from 7/7 to 5/7, I've had zero deaths during the course of 6 seasons.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hatch Cover and Drainage

Another question concerning Hatch Covers and Drainage.

Seems that my drowning chamber layout blew-up big time, apparently water doesn't flow through Hatch Covers when they are 'closed'. I was under the impression that they did from the Wiki.

Thus, the question is, do they still block the movement of objects through z-levels (but letting THE water pass) when they are open, seeing that they don't do it when 'closed'.

- Rhinoceros
- Giant Eagles
- Grizzley Bears
- Giant Red Pandas

Which one would you recommed for my mainstay War Animal?

Note that pasture/grazer requirements have been removed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Draining Drowning Chambers (Design)

So, I'm building my drowning chambers and I'm little uncertain on the draining design. Basically, I'm going to run the water from a river to the chambers throught a couple of floodgates and a fortification. Now the drainage is harder.

Apparently, stuff and bodies will float through the fortifications, so I need to figure a mechanism which is building destroyer safe, but which can be 'maintained' easily (haul the goblinite) while still draining the water the from th chambers.

Thus, my first idea is to drain the water through a couple of fortifications on the same z-level as the chamber floor, behind which there is a pit and a hatch cover leading to a tunnel that drains to the egde of the map. This however, doesn't fit with the fortress layout as I would need to deconstruct the fortification in order to get to the loot.

The second idea is to have a pit behind the fortifications leading to the said tunnel. However this tunnel wouldn't run all the way to the edge, but rather, it would be positioned according to the fortress layout leading to the 'collection chamber'. It would have a pit and a hatch cover in the middle (to which the goblinite would get stuck yes? also when it's closed?) and a floodgate connection to maintenance corridor leading to the main fort. The water would drain yet another z-level downwards throught the hatch and along another tunnel to the edge of the map.

.. thus my question is, does this plan have any particular loopholes in it?
