DF Gameplay Questions / Dragon cant breathe fire forever?

So I wanted to trap a dragon in this enclosed space that I could open and close a bridge next to, to allow the dragon to breathe fire through some fortifications when I wanted.

I couldn't encourage the dragon to come out of its lair without taking away its fire breathing by editing its code, I changed the delay before it could attack again from 50 to some number like 5000000000000000000000. It worked but now it seems like nothing I try will allow the dragon to breathe fire again. I've sent dudes right up to it and it only rips them to shreds, no fire. I changed its delay back, but it must be in the game now ticking down? Is there a way I could duplicate the dragon anew?

how quickly does a volcano replenish itself?

I'm wondering if I could come up with some kind of deadly contraption involving bridges, and letting loose a bunch of lava.

DF Gameplay Questions / What do I do with this Giant?

So I've come across my 2nd megabeast, and once again it was completely anticlimactic. x )
It walked into a cage trap, 0 wounded, 0 dead.

so what on earth do i do with it?

I've thought of a couple different things.

1. put it in a pit, with a retractable bridge on the outer end, and a folding one towards the base, goblins fall in and become play toys. But I don't know if giants have to eat something.

2. target practice for marksdwarfs, would they be able to get enough shots at it that it would be worth it, or would it die without them so much as gaining a level or two?

3. sell it to traders? I'm not sure how much its worth, and its in a willow cage. Wondering if this would be worthwhile.

4. Add it to my zoo?

tell me what you think.

DF Gameplay Questions / Ammo management screen question

So where you assign the amount of ammo to a squad, I always figured the ammo amount was per individual.... but I'm wondering now... is it per squad?

While I'm at it,

how many bolts can a dwarf carry around at once.

And whats your favorite balance between iron, wood, and bone bolts for the purposes of having them always ready to train, and always ready to fight.
Because I always set bolts with no material restriction to be used for combat, and I set wood and bone bolts individually to be used for both training and combat so if a dwarf has nothing but bone or wood bolts, he doesn't go crazy and run into the midst of battle trying to bash in an elite sword goblin skull.

DF Gameplay Questions / Most efficient way to rid of stone

so without destroying the stone, I want to know whats the most common, quick, and efficient way of ridding stone.
I don't know if there is anything besides the simple straight forward method that I use...

Selecting all the stone thats in the way of a stockpile, ect, and dumping it to a location usually right outside the entrance.
But this method usually sucks and sometimes even leads to a slow downfall to my fort as everyone is busy dumping stone, so I turn stone gathering off on the majority of my guys but eh...

so should I have a group of people specifically for stone moving at all times?

DF Suggestions / A few suggestions

possibly have a way to set Traffic so dwarfs will count other dwarfs/enemies/moving things as obstacles (in a way) so that they know if route A is more crowded and would therefore take more time to go that way rather than going down the empty but 2 squares longer distance of route B.

have a way to copy disignations, so you could copy intricate room set ups to make it easier to place them up a level as well, ect.
generally more freedom with disignations.

DF Modding / Water mod

Is their a water mod that increases the survival rate of everything from drowning?
I searched but didn't find much.
It just doesn't make any sense to me for a Tiger, or monkey, or even half of the elfs and humans to drown so easily.
It seems unless something is amphibious or a fish that water is as lethal as magma. -_-

If not, is it possible to mod, or hard coded?

DF Gameplay Questions / Restricting caravan access

Is there a way, cheating or not to absolutely restrict caravan access. Because I'm on a steep volcano mountain, with the only flat plain of land being in front of my entrance, and I've started building a floor "bridge" off the flat part across to the edge of the map which isn't that far. I'm hoping I can somehow make it so the caravan is only allowed to enter or exit via that "bridge" and maybe add an actual bridge to it, once its done to further permit or restrict things from coming in or leaving.

I thought I saw sphera - something do with when he was doing the sea serpent farm, he used armor statues or something to block all entrances. Can I do the same thing, preferably in a cheating manner but to the end of restriction?

DF Gameplay Questions / Lava Fountain

Silly Question time, how would I go about setting up a continuous no management once its done lava fountain, is such a thing possible?

I started a new fort to test some stuff, at a volcano site WITH TREES and lots of them. Its perfect for setting up some kind of cool flowing lava thing.
purely for the !!FUN!!, aesthetics, and dwarfiness of it.

So I'm pretty well versed in military now.
And I'm wondering if any non-dwarfy weapons are useful at all.

Like buying long swords for some dwarfs (essentially a two-handed sword for them) have a nice squad of "bezerkers".
as far as ranged go I prefer crossbows (cause I always have more bolts on hand than arrows, and its always higher quality)

but what about whips, or pikes?

And is a pick a weapon type?
I had my first beheading earlier, a miner got into a scrap with a kobold, and truly made a new definition out of "maimed corpse".
So I'm wondering about any good strategies of setting up a squad of pick dwarfs.
All I know is that they get bonuses to it depending on their mining skill, but is that the same thing?
And how would I train them... o.o

I'll throw Gripsqueezed in here, why not. A Silver-forged battleaxe, taken up by Mirrorboulder, who always wanted to be a musician. But the fort has so use for magicians, so we gave him an axe and told him to cut up the goblins trying to break down our door instead of playing that damn trumpet all day.



Turns out, it smashes faces in better than his old guitar did.

DF Gameplay Questions / Becoming a Baron

So this is 99% because I would like the option to tame exotic animals.
Maybe a sliver because I haven't had a baron before.

I have vast amounts of dwarf bucks, and exported wealth.

and this is my new fort, so thats nothing compared to what the old one accumulated.
But that damn liason still hasn't asked me about Barony. > : D

I searched around the forums, most of the questions and answers are related to silly noble stuff... (loved the bit where the baron was jealous of himself).

I've heard there was a few bugs related to what I want to do, maybe becoming a baron, or having a beast dude is impossible without raw editing this release?
If so, are their repercussions for turning the [exotic] tags on all animals to (exotic) like with the aquifers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Genetic Breeding

Theres not too much on the wiki about genetics, and it doesn't cover non-dwarfs from what I see.

Every last one of my dogs, and puppies have the "gigantic" trait, except a single puppy that says "she is very muscular and just gigantic overall".

I started with a single male and female dog. Not hunting, or war, and I trained them at the kennel early on to be war dogs.
I just let them run around and they mostly follow this one dwarf everywhere.

So I'm wondering... were the traits passed down genetically, and if so are these traits of any use? I.E. "gigantic" giving a bonus to "health" more tissues and such. Or possibly more strength it can put behind a bite or charge or something.

So I want to make my whole base as deep into the world as possible, even living side by side with magma and such.

But I want to know how deep its even possible to have a pasture, If I dig out a large area, and have already hit caverns will it begin to slowly fill with cave moss?

DF Gameplay Questions / Poultry/egg farm/birds underground

So I know that you can make a pasture underground after you discover a cavern,
And animals like cows/yaks/llama's need the grass to eat or they die.

but what about turkeys/ducks/chickens/ect ?
I don't think I've ever noticed them eating grass before, so I want to take them deeper into my fort.
