DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Newbie problems w/ Human Outsider

I'm having some problems figuring out how to equip containers (bags/backpacks/ect), and I was wondering if that was because you can only equip backpacks, or whether I'm missing something, or whether I have to buy a container instead of picking it up. \(O.o)/
