DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why are potash makers considered so useless?
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:01:44 pm »
I mean, on the ten-to-one, mining to fish dissection scale of uselessness potash making might clock in at a 4 - not at all necessary, but mildly useful busy work for a dwarf skilled in it. If more realistic farming is ever implemented into the game they might even become essential (gasp!). I dunno, I just stopped to think about it and realized that, hey, I actually kind of like getting some crap Potash Maker wave three.

DF Gameplay Questions / Spinterz Dwarf Therapist - what do professions sort by?
« on: July 27, 2013, 04:40:40 pm »
What do the numbers in the "professions" column, mean, and thus what does sorting by it do?
Also the "roles" part of the mouseover basically gives you their compatibility with certain jobs based on their traits, right? I'm curious how the percentages are calculated, because they seem extremely high given how much traits vary by. Edit: Never mind, the answer to this one is yes. Still wondering about the first thing, though.

DF Wiki Discussion / Open announcement: some formatting templates
« on: July 25, 2013, 11:45:13 pm »
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Category:Inline_formatting_templates
I recently went through and added some entries to the wiki's crop of inline formatting templates (as well as added a category). These are templates that basically allow you to more easily do common in-text operations that don't require line breaking.
This is just a message to wiki users to be aware that they, you know, exist
{{Bug}} - Use for MantisDB entries.
{{Ct}} - Use for temperatures.
{{Dffd}} - Use for Dwarf Fortress File Depot files.
{{Dfma}} - Use to link to the Dwarf Fortress map archive (first param is m for maps, mv for movies).
{{F}} - Use for forum links.
{{K}} - Use for keystrokes.
{{Tt}} - Use to outline code bits, tags, things like that.
Peace.

DF Wiki Discussion / Can we delete some of these articles marked for deletion?
« on: July 25, 2013, 11:15:59 pm »
There's a number of articles on the wiki marked for deletion but not actually deleted (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Unused:Fishpond: we even have an entire namespace dedicated to one!). Can one of the admins get on this and clear it out? Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Discrepancies in creature size on the wiki?
« on: July 09, 2013, 09:57:28 pm »
There seems to be a disconnect between the numbers given in http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Creature and those in some individual creature's raw files on the wiki. For instance, giant cheetahs appear to have an adult size of 560,000 in the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Giant_cheetah) but this is cited as 100,000 in the creatures list. The same is true of Giant bushmasters (dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Giant_bushmaster): 129,922 in the creatures list, 259,845 on the bushmaster's page. In the bushmaster's case this seems to be the species' juvenile size, but I have no clue where the cheetah numbers came from. Anyone got any ideas?
Edit: forgot to mention, I've started going through the creatures list alphabetically, these are only the ones I've noticed so far.

DF Gameplay Questions / How well does LARGE_PREDATOR work in Fortress mode?
« on: July 09, 2013, 11:27:14 am »
According to the wiki:
A dwarf approaches a pack of beak dogs or a tiger to, say, fish in the nearby pond. Will they reliably attack him? I honestly haven't seen much of it, but that's because I usually keep my non-ambusher dwarves close to the vest.
Quote
Will attack things that are smaller than it (like dwarves). Only one group of "large predators" will appear on any given map (possibly two groups on "savage" maps). In adventure mode, large predators will try to ambush and attack you (and your party will attack them back). When tamed, large predators tend to be much more aggressive to enemies than non-large predators, making them a good choice for an animal army. They may go on rampages in worldgen, and adventurers may receive quests to kill them. Also, they can be mentioned in the intro paragraph when starting a fortress e.g. "ere the wolves get hungry."

I dig out a channel for waterflow and barricade it with a door. Will it work?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Fortress's Wikipedia article
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:40:12 pm »
Ding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_Fortress. How'd I do? It's about ready for a GA nom. If anyone has a reference with the game's technical specs that's a little closer to Word of God then the wiki, that would be brilliant.
Edit: Needs a proofread first, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hasn't had a drink in a long time thoughts for vampires

Do these exist? I cannot recall seeing a vampire with thirsty thoughts, but I may be (or am probably) wrong.

DF Wiki Discussion / Query on user-rights and history of the wiki
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:20:34 pm »
I'm curious on two accounts. Firstly, who is the site founder? When was it founded? Secondly, is there a centralized process for administrator rights? Are any of the other Mediawiki rights groups enabled?
I've been doing a lot of work on the wiki, so I'm curious as to its structure and state. In addition I might handle a rewrite of DF's main wiki article, so a more complete history would be helpful.
