DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sad Fate of Tourlabor
« on: October 03, 2007, 09:37:00 pm »
I don't have any creative RP story to go with my fort, but I just wanted to share how it progressed over the 7 years of game time it lasted since it was my first fort that was even moderately successful =p

Tourlabor

The beginning was quiet... too quiet... no real attacks from the river, the chasm, or the lava river when I hit it, so I just built up in peace for many years... then the goblins started coming.  first I just locked them out while I frantically built a trap corridor.  That took care of them.  Next year, the traps sufficed again, though I had some casualties.  Third year, they came with trolls.  Many, many trolls.  15+.  I wasn't prepared for this.  some fell into my trap corridors, but many stormed right through the untrapped front gate and into my halls and barracks.  they made quick work of my 20 or so military dwarves and started tearing up the place.  we did eventually drive them off, but there was a lot of damage and about 30 casualties.  I still have over 100 dwarves left so I could certainly keep going if I wanted to, but I think I'd rather take what I've learned and make a fresh, more elegant fort...

on that note, any tips?  especially on surviving troll attacks (and attacks from even more fearsome creatures)?  I'm going to set up better fortifications and barracks this time, and maybe some catapults too... but really, I'm pretty inept when it comes to combat in this game.  also, is there any way to keep your dwarves from walking into the line of fire trying to pick stuff up?  like, what's the point of trap corridors if your dwarves will walk right into them to clean up the mess and get instagibbed?  maybe I should just use fluid defenses instead, though those still mystify me.  I'll have to read the wiki a bit more on those.

please, feel free to look at my sad fort and give any tips you can think of =p

time to dig to the demon pits so this place goes out with a bang...

DF Gameplay Questions / possible to get by without water?
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:10:00 pm »
so it seems like it would have to be a miracle to find a fortress location that has lava, renewable water, trees, and decent farmland... I found a location that has everything but a river.  can I get by without water?  will my dwarves survive if I just have a ton of alcohol for them to drink instead of water?  and if so, what else will I be missing out on with no water?  no water power I guess - is wind power good enough for most purposes?  are there alternatives to wind and water?  I have fossil fuels =p no plutonium though.

DF Gameplay Questions / "reclaiming" without reclaiming?
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:13:00 am »
So now that you can choose exactly where you settle... what happens if you build a fortress you like, but some unfortunate mishap dooms your dwarves... like, a wild carp devours them all or something... or maybe you just abandon it... and rather than reclaiming your fortress, you just re-settle a new fortress on the same location?  Can you do that?  is it still overrun with monsters?  or could you use this as a kind of exploit to build a decent, expansive fortress, say, with 7 miner dwarves, abandon it, and re-settle it with your 7 normal dwarves?

DF Gameplay Questions / Refuse pit?
« on: October 31, 2007, 08:39:00 am »
So I noticed it's possible to set an area as a 'dump'.  What does this mean?  Dwarves will dump garbage there?  Is it possible to make a really long dump shaft connected to every level of your fort, with a refuse stockpile at the bottom (or maybe not even), so that your dorfs will throw their garbage down the shaft from whatever floor they're on for it to decay at the bottom?  might be a nice way to avoid miasma problems, though your dorfs would have a long hike to retrieve bones for crafting...

DF Gameplay Questions / bridge keeps getting suspended
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:27:00 pm »
so I'm trying to build a big bridge over the chasm.  5x7 bridge out of 8 or 9 rocks.  every time I try to build it, the dwarves go to it for like a whole season before they say they "could not find path" and suspend construction.  I don't know what's causing this.  I un-suspend construction and it immediately gets suspended again.  the first time it happened, I figured it must be because they were trying to make the bridge with rocks stuck on the other side of the chasm (I had made a small bridge across at first which I deconstructed in order to make a big bridge), so I deleted the blueprint and started over, using only rock types that weren't blocked off in any way.  like half a year later, same error.  I deleted it and tried one more time, with yet another set of materials - same thing happens.

what could be causing this?  here's a screenshot of the bridge and the chasm it will be crossing:

DF Gameplay Questions / very little adversity
« on: October 03, 2007, 09:48:00 am »
OK, defense is probably the aspect of the game I understand the least currently.  I have like 130 dwarves and my only military is my 13 fortress guards, and my hunters, if they count.  I do have a ton of war dogs - I've been breeding them like crazy.  but anyway, I guess I should get on with the questions.

I've had the underground river revealed for about 7 game years now, and I'm pretty sure I must have no river civilization, because I have never seen a monster come out of the river area.

I've had the chasm revealed for about 3 or 4 game years and have only had about 3 or 4 ant/ratmen come out and walk into my traps.

I've had the magma river revealed for about 2 years now and have yet to see a lava creature.

am I just really lucky or is this normal?  the only real adversity I've had so far has been one goblin siege, which I was completely unprepared for, so I locked my doors and dug a haphazard trap corridor for them to walk into.  I've noticed it's hard to coax siegers into traps without getting your dwarves killed as well, while they try to pick up the siegers' gear...

DF Gameplay Questions / masterpiece ammo?
« on: October 01, 2007, 09:26:00 pm »
so if one of my dorfs shoots a masterpiece bolt, will the crafter of said bolt get PO'd?

I didn't start wondering this until after I made a few of them, so I'm thinking my uber bonecrafter will be having a nervous breakdown shortly if this is the case...

DF Gameplay Questions / room zoning questions
« on: October 01, 2007, 10:48:00 am »
I'm finally getting the hang of this game when I thought I never would =p but I still have some lingering questions I can't readily find the answer to in the wiki.

Let's say I have a barracks.  I set it as a barracks from one bed and set the size of it.  Do I have to do the same thing for every single bed in the room, or will they all just follow the first bed's room designation if I plunk a ton of em down?  and if I put down a lot of beds and designate them all as barracks, does the 1/4 room value penalty come into effect?  how about if I put an archery target in there, or weapon rack, and use those to designate a barracks - overlapping room penalty?  unneccessary?  neither?  both?  how about for a statue garden or dining room or anything else?  just zone one statue or zone them all?

speaking of the room penalty - that's still the way the game works, right?  can you still make one huge bedroom for every one of your nobles,  and have them all be satisfied if you decorate it to 4x the requirement of 1 room?

DF Bug Reports / adventure mode comments
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:01:00 pm »
so I've tried adventure mode a couple times and had some trouble.  First, the slowdown seems to be horrible and I don't know how to pinpoint why... but I think a million people are already reporting that.  Also, it seems that even dwarves who can swim can't get out of the water unless there's a slope, which there isn't along most rivers... so it seems like if you fall in the river, you're doomed?

also, an anecdote: my current adventurer, who's stuck swimming in the river, fell in trying to attack a carp that attacked him from the river.  The carp seem quite vicious when you're on land... but once I fell in the water, all the fish and hippoes in the river were terrified of me as I swam toward them... I could never catch them because they're all too fast for me, but I was amused that they were frightened of me.  I think the massive slowdown I'm experiencing right now might have the fish traffic jam as a contributing factor... I have like 100 fish fleeing from me at the same time...

DF Bug Reports / Several bugs
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:12:00 pm »
First, thanks for the new version!

Second, I've hit several bugs in my first few minutes - unless it's just something I'm doing wrong.  Generated a new world.  equipped a band of dwarves.  among their default inventory was an item that costed 0 points called ' meat' (with a blank space before it).  I took 150 of this because it was free =p but when I hit embark, it crashed (not surprisingly).  There appear to be a number of unnamed things and 'free' things in the list of things you can take with you...

started again, got rid of this ' meat', figuring it was the source of the crash.  apparently it was because I was able to start up fine the second time.  However, the ground was littered with mysterious sparkling objects.  When I moved my cursor over them with 'K', the field that would say what the item was was cycling REALLY fast so I couldn't read it.  I assume these are stacks of items or something?  are the sprite and the name supposed to flash really fast?

lastly, when I moved the cursor around, it would often 'stick', and my map would keep scrolling in that direction even though I stopped pressing that direction.  I would have to hit the key a few more times for it to stop scrolling.  It might have been related to alt-tabbing because I just switched back to the game and this particular problem seems to be gone...

Let me know if you need any more info to help diagnose wth is going on =p
