Roll To Dodge / Resistance [Suggestion RTD]
« on: December 24, 2014, 08:35:13 pm »
Your eyes open to find yourself in a small room, maybe a hundred or so square feet, made of dark stone bricks. You lay upon a rather uncomfortable bed consisting of a wooden board, an old mattress, and a blanket with more than a few holes in it. Rolling out of bed, you stand up and look down at the blue jumpsuit you're wearing.

Huh. That's odd, you don't remember being in a jumpsuit earlier, but you're not complaining as long as you're clothed. On the flip side, you've got a water bottle and... a Swiss Army knife? It's rusted to hell and back, but it's still a knife.

You're trying to figure out just what happened that got you in here, where you are, and for whatever reason you can't remember your name, either. Who are you? What's up with this?

You awaken in the early morning of the new day, disoriented, in a ditch and with a painful headache. The sound of the occasional bird chirp, the odd cricket makes you hurt a little more, so you tune them out to try and think. You throw the torn (and useless) blanket off of you, sit up, and through your headache try to remember exactly just what happened the night before.

Late at night, 11:39 PM or so the bar's clock had read. A night out with some friends. Typical bar night, with jokes, conversations, an adventure story or two by those assigned to go outside the walls of the zone. Maybe you were looking for a little fun, or maybe you just wanted to impress your friends, but for whatever reason, in your drunken stupor you came up to some random girl, maybe a year or two younger than yourself, and started hitting on her. She told you repeatedly she had a boyfriend, but your booze-soaked brain obviously didn't hear it. Things escalated when, for some reason or another, you made a move to grab the girl. Some of the other guys (who were probably drunk themselves) cheered on, while others simply watched. You remember your hands reaching her waist, moving up underneath her shirt, when she screamed and tried to pull away.

A fight was all the better detail you could remember afterwards. The girl shoved you away, socked a couple others in the face. Some guys began swinging fists, bottles, chairs at others. You yourself managed to smash a half-full bottle over one person's head, a plate over another patron. Not knowing it at the time, you picked up and swung one of the steel bar stools in a random direction, striking one patron in the back of the head, who went limp. Blood was pooling around his head; you paused. The bartender clocked you over the head with a police baton, and you fell unconscious afterwards. Other than that, your mind goes blank.

Even though it was a complete accident, and the poor bastard wasn't officially declared dead until after everyone was sent home, murder in your city was an offense punishable by the same fate of death. Your closest friend talked with the overseer, and got your punishment reduced to exile. At that point, you were given very minimal supplies, a jumpsuit, and a warning not to come back unless you wanted a sniper's bullet embedded in your skull. You were dragged down the road, a near-destroyed blanket thrown over your torso and limbs, and left there overnight.

Before you set off to find somewhere else to settle down, you decide to take a quick inventory. A paper packet of hardtack emergency rations and a single 1.5-liter bottle of water, both enough to last you one day, an old hand-drawn map of the surrounding area, a small folding knife, and what money was on you and from your old apartment; a grand total of 49 dollars.

You start wondering what you should do now, but more importantly, you're wondering what your name is.

DF Modding / Can I add descriptions to items?
« on: May 10, 2013, 03:49:23 pm »
I'm fixing a mod to my own likes and tastes, but I'd also like to add descriptions to weapons, ammo, armor, and some tools. Will adding [DESCRIPTION: <description here>] actually add that text to the item in-game when I examine it, or will it refuse to launch the game?

May 4th, 2014. The shit has hit the fan.

You and a couple friends were going to a supposedly-uninhabited island, taking a yacht as your guys' ride. Then the storm hit. The wind picked up a ton. The rain fell hard; it almost stung like hail. And the waves... A massive wave several meters high crashed into your boat, and then you blacked out.

May 5th (you think). You wake up. Other than the storm, you have no memory of what happened over the past several hours. Trying to get a bearing on your surroundings, you notice yourself on a beach. You look to the east, and you see the sun rising. You see sand. Looking south, you notice a large, pointed rock, on which a boat seems to be impaled; you recognize it as the yacht you and your buddies used. You then look west. Dark clouds far off, and more sand on the ground. You finally decide to look north. A forest with large trees comes into your view.

You have almost forgotten what you were carrying. You stand up, and look down at your clothes. An unbuttoned jean jacket, with a green polo shirt underneath. There's nothing in the pockets but a lighter and a soaked pack of cigarettes, useless now. On your legs are carpenter jeans held up by a belt. In your left back pocket is a small, folding pocket knife. The right front pocket holds 2 pistol magazines holding 8 rounds each. On your right hip is a holster whose occupant is a medium-sized pistol. Pulling it out and examining it, the weapon is a Tokarev TT-33 pistol. This weapon fires, after looking closer at the manufacturing markings, the 7.62x25mm Tokarev pistol round. You left the magazine in the gun, full and topped off. This leaves you with 24 rounds for your gun total.

Checking your jacket some more, you pull your wallet out of an inside pocket. The wallet contained an ID, a driver's license, a credit card, and about $18 in American paper money, most likely useless now.

After realizing your situation--you're stranded on an island in a post-society world--you quickly figure out that you're in a life-or-death survival deal. You have nothing but what you can gather from around you, or, if you can get to it, the yacht you used.

Your head is still spinning over your name, even though your ID, license, and credit card make it blatantly obvious. You're still confused, though...

June 14th, 2019.

Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2:34 PM. Minutes after the nuke hit.

It was a normal day. Clear skies. 71 degrees Farenheit. You were walking through the streets of northern Minneapolis. You were getting some groceries from the nearby Aldi, though not without issues. Minneapolis isn't known for being the happiest of cities. A group of teen-aged thugs tried to rob you, and pulled out knives to intimidate you. As you watched them brandish their weapons, you pulled out a Colt M1911 handgun and said "Nice try, kids, but I think you just brought a knife..." You paused as you drew your weapon, "to a gunfight. Now, go on, get out of here." They retreated.

A little while later, you get back home. Since you live in a small house, you have to manage with what your money got you. The house was seemingly randomly put together. The kitchen and pantry were built into the basement. The bedrooms were put on the top floor. After you put your groceries where they belonged, you looked at the clock. 2:28 PM. You think your wife is going to be home in another 10 minutes. You never knew what was going to happen...

North Korea and the US had some political issues going on for a few years past, but you didn't really care about that. You did hear that North Korea was threatening to launch nuclear weapons, and that got you a little more anxious, but you quickly passed it off as a promise that wouldn't be kept. You didn't think it would happen...

You heard a faint boom. You looked out the window, and thought it was an airliner. You heard the crackle of a rocket engine, and knew it wasn't what you thought. It was Korea's nuclear missile. You quickly ran down to your basement and slammed the door. You grabbed your pistol, ran to the bathroom, and lied down in the bathtub. Then, a deafening explosion hit nearby. You lost consciousness...

You woke up in a pile of rubble, dust covering you. Half your body is underneath a van. Just as you feared, your hometown was hit directly. Everybody you knew had to be dead, or buried in rubble, going to die soon. You had no doubt about that... You think you hear someone yelling, "HEY, IS ANYBODY ALIVE OUT HERE?!?" You try to shout back, but as you draw in a breath, you inhale a lungful of the dust covering you. A big coughing fit ensues. Fortunately, the man with the clear throat hears your coughing, and you hear footsteps coming toward you. "Come on, man, stay with me. I'll get you outta here," then you start to lose consciousness again, this time with a burning in your throat. You start coughing up blood. "Stay with me, come on," and you feel a gas mask come up to your mouth and nose. You gulp down large breaths of fresh air into your lungs, drag yourself from underneath the van, and grope through the rubble. You feel cold metal, and pull it out; it's your Colt. You quickly scrabble around and find some more ammo for it, and you quickly shove them in your pockets. "Good, we might need that. Now come on," and the man puts your arm around his shoulder and helps you to a small, crudely-fortified project house. Inside, the man brings you to a bed, in which you lie down and fall asleep for several hours.

When you wake up, the sun is setting, and you see a few bits of food, a backpack, and a canteen on a small table next to the bed. You hear gunshots, and the man tells you "Gear up, we gotta get moving quickly. Bandits are starting to come in, and this place has pretty high radiation levels. We can't risk our lives." You nod in agreement, and the man leaves. You put the food in the backpack, leaving one piece out for you to snack on, reload your Colt, take a drink of water, and finally, eat the biscuit that you left out. You feel refreshed, and head downstairs. You quickly took inventory, and then went outside in a destroyed world...

However, you seem to have forgotten your name, and you try to remember it as you head out the door.

Other than that, what are you going to do? The man that helped you is standing by the project gate.

The Colony
Apocalypse Survival

The planet is in ruins. A mysterious, deadly, and extremely contagious virus being guarded with the highest security priority has been released and has wiped out most of the world's population. Only about a million people survived worldwide. Europe, Asia, the Americas... All of them, killed off by a simple pathogen, with only a few thousand survivors in each country. The big cities--New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Moscow--they all fell into disrepair. Ships rusted and sank into the depths of the oceans. No longer were laws enforced. Looting occurred on a massive scale. Arson was committed all over the world. There were sometimes fights over cans of cat food. Wars were fought over a simple scrap of land, and the right of way on the road went to the car with the biggest guns. The world, as we knew it, ended...

Now, in the southern United States, a small ragtag group of 14 survivors banded together for survival. After weeks of traveling, they've found a relatively secure area, a mixture of groups of houses, a few stores, and tons upon tons of wreckage and rubble. They have no choice but to scavenge for survival...

What will the Colonists do?

So I've seen a few community/succession games (such as Dead-Iron and Rock-Touched way back in 31.25) and I've decided to try and start one of my own in a while, using a mod I've downloaded; specifically, this one here. I'd think it'd be OK for a community game, so here we go! The world gen parameters used was the REAL WORLD set, by the way.

The war is long over... The nukes are long gone, but the effects remained. Several areas still drop radioactive rain and blow radioactive dust across the land, and regular dust storms blow all over the world, sometimes stretching and going on for many miles. However, the human race has not given up. Hundreds of millions of people settled out in the wastes, adopting the name "wastelanders". Some people have experienced severe droughts, and thus started killing and eating their fellow humans. "Cannibals" they were called. And one man, simply know as the "Master", sought to control the world. He has conscripted an army and has raged more wars beyond the Nuclear War. This "Master's Army" controls many places around the world, and they seek more, threatening those who surround their towns...

There are some people, however, who lived in vaults before, through, and after the nuke strikes. They were known as "Vault Citizens" and never really took sides, although it will take all of their strength and will to survive in this harsh, post-apocalyptic world...

Out of the vaults for the first time in a few decades, 7 men and women have braved the outside world for all the glory of the Central Vault, and have brought on a significant challenge; to construct, maintain, and defend a city entirely on the outside world, with minimal underground operations. A challenge for a fitting name, for the town will be called "Portal-Stockades". They have found a good plot of land, and are ready to set out into the World Beyond...

Here is the list of citizens; if they are normal text, they're open for humanizing. If they're teal-colored, they are taken and the forum user's name will be put after the person's name and profession. If they are under 18 years of age, they will be referred to as "boys" or "girls"; of 18 or over, "males" or "females".

DF Modding / Any undead survival mods out there?
« on: July 04, 2012, 04:04:10 pm »
I've been playing a zombie survival browser game called Die2Nite, and it focuses on re-animated zombies, not virus zombies like most other games. So, I've been starting to wonder if any mods are out there that turn your fortress or adventure into a battle against the walking flesh-eating dead. Can anybody help me with this??

Oh, and to make something else clear, posting something along the lines of "Go embark in an evil biome" will neither be accepted nor listened to.

DF Gameplay Questions / Succession game questions
« on: June 17, 2012, 10:11:36 pm »
I may sound like an incredible newb, but I am confused as to how one picks up and sends off the save to a succession fort, i.e. when one overseer is done and hands the save off to another overseer. I don't know much how to do it. I know it's packed up and downloaded off of the DFFD, but as to how it's uploaded, I don't know what to do.

Anybody who can help?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Attempting the "Cave Challenge"
« on: June 12, 2012, 10:52:38 am »
Many months ago, I read about another Cave Challenge thread, but it died off a while ago.

These are the rules of the Cave Challenge as I have read them. Many of you may have tried something like this on your own, but perhaps with different "rules". The goal is simple, survive in the caverns, and only in the caverns:

0) The fortress must be set up in the cave or the immediate walls of the cave. As much of the fortress as possible should be in the actual cave.
1) Immediately upon embarking, you must head for the caves.
2) No resources the surface may be used in any way. No water, wood, animals, or plants.
3) No embark items from the surface may be taken: Fungiwood instead of Maple, Giant Mole Dog meat instead of Mountain Goat meat, etc.
4) All 3 caverns may be used, but not the magma sea.
5) Stone that is in no way near the caves may not be used.
6) No trading with the surface is allowed at all: the cave must be completely self sufficient. But migrants are allowed in.
7) The caves may be "tamed" only as is nessecary: you must preserve the natural asthetics of the cave. If you were on the surface and a sissy, you'd know how elves feel: except instead of not cutting down trees, you're going to be not building giant death traps everywhere to kill everything.

The difficulty (and therefore, !!FUN!!) of this challege is setting up in a hostile environment, without caravan support, and possibly without water/magma. If you find a magma tube in a cavern, you are very, very lucky. If not, well then, you don't need metal.

If you try it, post the results.

NOTE: The old thread was way back from the good ol' 31.25 days. For those of you who have tried it in 31.25, be prepared for new features, and whatever you do, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES dig down to the Caverns in an Evil area!!! (unless you like being mauled by re-animating zombie Giant Cave Spiders...)

Modern Battlezone: A Solder's Experiences
A Text Suggestion Adventure

You wake up to muffled booming in your small cloth cot inside your barrack tent, in the midst of your sleeping squad-mates. You check your watch; it says 6:34 AM. You get dressed and walk outside by Jim, another squad-mate. He observes the desert landscape around you; "Artillery fire," he says to nobody in particular. "Is that what woke me?" you ask, and he notices you. Jim shrugs, and says "Oh, probably."

It's still early in the morning, and you went to bed extremely drowsy last night after your patrol shift was over. You can't seem to remember your name...

You get together a brief mental agenda for today: Figure out your name, and figure out what to do.
