DF Suggestions / Building Deconstruction in Adventurer Mode
« on: October 17, 2013, 03:30:56 pm »
It'd be really neat if things like tables and beds weren't inseparably affixed to the ground, and being able to take pieces of furniture like that with you would add a lot to the exploration of abandoned dwarf fortresses, at least for me. It seems like it would be fairly simple to add, and I don't see how it would interfere with any sort of vision of what adventurer mode should be; why shouldn't I be able to pick up an artifact featherwood cabinet just because it was a part of a dwarf's bedroom?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / High Fantasy Conquest: Game Two Part Two
« on: September 04, 2013, 11:45:18 pm »
I am resuming the second game of High Fantasy conquest, which abruptly ended nearly a year ago. I made this new thread to get everybody back up to speed with the goings on and re-familiarize everyone with the current state of the game world so that you all don't have to trawl through thirty pages of forum posts. I know getting back into the game might be kind of rough due to things being very complicated when I stopped updating -- it took me multiple hours to update the map and do all of the calculations for everybody near the end, and even then I made numerous errors. This was in fact the main reason I gave up running the game. However, I think we'll get back into the swing of things soon enough. Below I'll repost the rules (in more readable format than previous threads), as well as the story of the game up to this point so you guys don't have to switch back between this thread and the previous one (unless you want to know the exact number of dolphin fins in the Kobold stockpile at turn 31 or something).

My friend and I decided to play a bloodline game with each other, where in typical bloodline fashion we pass the reigns of the fortress over to one another at the beginning of each year. We also each kept a log of the events that happened during each year, although we didn't take any screenshots (at least I didn't). This won't be much of a story, without anything written from a dwarven point of view or in any sort of narrative fashion; it's just what happened in a computer game. I doubt anybody will find this too interesting, but I enjoyed reading back over the logs. I don't know if this is only because they pertain directly to me, and thus fulfill some sort of narcissistic obsession.

The site Whippedeagle was founded at is composed mostly of a sinister mountain range, with multiple shallow and deep metals, as well as flux stone. The site also features a volcano, rhinoceroses, and some evil red dust clouds.

Other Games / FOnline: 2238
« on: April 08, 2013, 01:07:54 am »
FOnline is a fan-made MMORPG that utilizes the Fallout 2 engine (or at least something based off of it), created and maintained by a small team of independent developers known as "The Rotators". In order to play the game, you will need to have Fallout 2 installed, due to the game's utilization of files from Fallout 2. Other than that, however, the game is completely free and can be downloaded here. It is set just after the events of Fallout 2 in southern California, and as such you will find many locations, items, and (sometimes) characters that you've met before in previous Fallout games, in addition to a ton of new, original content. The game has a lot of depth, with a crafting system and faction alignments for the player to partake in, in addition to a plethora of quests. The game is also home to some of the most hilarious Russian-to-English translations I have ever seen. It's super unforgiving, with players able to kill or steal from each other in basically any situation, but team work is rewarded, and playing with friends is the best way to experience FOnline (it is an MMO, after all). Because of this fact, I would like to play with the fine wastelanders of Bay12. Together, we shall aggregate power, fortune, and bitchin'-ass plasma rifles (see: power) and rip post-apocalyptic California a new one. If any of you wants to meet up with me or with each other in-game to do some raiding, adventuring, or shit-shoveling, this will hopefully serve as a means for you to do so. I might also make a FOnline Bay12 Teamspeak/Ventrilo/Something server maybe.

E: I have started an IRC for forumites to use to communicate while playing. Go here, select DarkMyst [Webirc], and join the channel "Overseer'sEyebrows".

Journal of Strodno "Boney" Glumpoisons

~3rd of Moonstone~
Goblins are fickle and violent creatures, all of whom are in a constant state of rage and hatred. It really isn't our fault; humans like to farm and travel, dwarves like to smith and drink, elves like to fuck trees, and goblins like to kill things. It's just our nature. Because of our intrinsic evilness, we often choose demons, spawned in the ultimate realm of evil and hate, to rule over us. The demon despot of my civilization, Ozod Omut (the Ruthlessness of Fangs), is Biretha Cavewebbed. He's also known as the Bad Cat (I have no idea why; he's a giant demon turtle for fuck's sake), but don't let him know you called him that or he'll have you skinned alive and dropped in the purring maggot pit. I've seen it happen, and it's damn good entertainment. Anyway, our malevolent master has lately gotten a bit homesick. He's been ordering goblin miners to dig deeper and deeper lately, and I've heard tell that some have even struck adamantine. Although only the dwarves know how to mine through the stuff, it's only a matter of time before one of the poor sods we captured squeals when we threaten to cut off his beard, followed by his testicles. Not wanting to be around when the Hellfire Parade rolls into the capital fortress and proceeds to try to kill every humanoid being on the planet (I mean, don't get me wrong, I like genocide and all that; just not when my race is at the receiving end), I assembled an expedition of goblins (which I've dubbed "The Reclusive Spiders") with varying professions to travel with me as far away as fucking possible from Ozod Omut's capital at Kissedstole. My plan is to found a dark fortress deep past enemy lines, into the hostile territory of humans, elves, enemy goblins, and, most importantly, dwarves. The dwarves are the craftiest, most insidious of the races (although I still like to think goblins are the evilest), and their elaborate nonsensical contraptions are the only chance this world has at defeating the demon invasion. As such, we are to make sure that the demons find our enemies (particularly the dwarves) before us, so that at the very least they will be weakened by the time they hit the fortress, and we can take solace in the fact that those dirty hippies, tall weirdos, and bearded drunkards all died before us. Tomorrow, myself and about twenty other goblins will slit the throats of all the dwarven captives at Kissedstole to buy more time, then steal a wagon and other supplies that we will need for the journey and to get started building a fortress and travel at full speed for several days straight until we are at a safe distance from that decrepit prison (I have to admit, it pains me to think that I will leave my putrid home, but even such a filthy and dank place is not worth facing Hell for). If my maths is correct, and if the escape and hike through hostile territory goes roughly to plan, we should arrive at the fortress site at around New Year's. We will also be leaving a copy of our planned route to Kissedstole's merchants, so that they can come resupply us. They won't rat us out to the Bad Cat if we can provide them with enough capital, which I plan to.

OOC: So, there it is. I'm planning a community goblin fort (using Squeegy's Goblin Tower mod), and you're all welcome to be dwarfed gobbed and to contribute the story however you want. I have little to no solid plans for the story, so I'll likely go along with whatever your journals or accounts say as a canon.

Before I do the first real update, I'd like to have at least one or two named goblins. Here's who you have to choose from:

DF Gameplay Questions / Can magma power nether-cap waterwheels?
« on: December 15, 2012, 11:54:07 am »
My map has absolutely no water apart from one murky pool, so this is the only way besides windmills (which would have to transfer power well over a hundred Z-levels from the surface) would be a magma waterwheel reactor. Is it possible/worthwhile with magma's slow flow speed?

DF Gameplay Questions / What happens to items stolen by kobolds?
« on: December 03, 2012, 12:21:18 am »
Are they totally irrecoverable and deleted from the world, or do they wind up in the nearest kobold cave? I committed genocide as an adventurer at a kobold cave, but was unable to find any dwarf-made items, despite knowing for a fact that my nearby dwarf fortresses had had several things stolen by kobolds.

DF Gameplay Questions / Siege Operators Abandoning Their Posts
« on: December 02, 2012, 03:39:02 pm »
I had a solid defense that was based on ballistas, which would have held off the zombie siege that ended my fort. However, all of my siege operators ran away from their siege engines at the first sight of zombies, instead of firing on them. Help please. Do I need to put them in a squad or something?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / More admantine then I know what to do with
« on: November 24, 2012, 02:07:09 pm »
On my 3x3 embark site, I've found 4 adamantine spires. I breached Hell by fortification, then walled off the window to the underworld and dug every single safe bit of adamantine available (excluding the stuff surrounded by magma). The result is this:

This is in addition to 10 full suits of adamantine armor for my elite hammerdwarves and 10 adamantine axes (as well as one artifact adamantine axe) for my novice axedwarf recruits. Unfortunately two of the sets of armor were stolen by kobolds/wildlife when 2 of my hammerdwarves fell to hordes of zombies and I had to retreat and stay locked up for a few years. Anyway, give me some good ideas for what to do with all this candy. I could potentially mine more if I really put in some effort with magma pumps.

Play With Your Buddies / Fallout: Rock Collector Playthrough
« on: November 19, 2012, 02:28:44 am »
Disclaimer: I am a hardened Fallout veteran. I have played every game in the series (besides Tactics and that one shitty console-exclusive spinoff) through several times. I will be doing some unorthodox things in this playthrough. If you notice me playing sub-optimally, please do not tell me what I'm doing wrong. I know what I'm doing, I'm just choosing to disregard my prior knowledge for the purpose of fun. That said, don't hesitate to post things you'd like to see me do and give me critical feedback for things that aren't related to my in-game tactics.

What this is: I will fully be playing through the original (not counting Wasteland) Fallout. While doing this, I will be following a certain stipulation: I will collect as many rocks throughout the game as I possibly can. I will also probably beat the game, but the rock thing is more important. I also plan on doing various silly things and in general not taking the game too seriously. All through my experience I will be documenting my thoughts, decisions, and posting screenshots to accompany them.

So, let's begin play!

Introduction
If you for some insane reason have never played Fallout, you might want to watch the introduction here. In a nutshell: the world's fucked and war never changes. Also vaults. Ron Perlman has a sexy voice.

Character

So here he is:

Mister Fister is a burly martial artist with a strange fascination for absurdly large weapons. He also has a strong throwing arm (so we can get some use out of those rocks!). Despite his brutish appearance, Fister has a decent intellect and good observation skills. He is however not very flexible, and he is also hideously ugly. For added fun, I gave him Bloody Mess, along with Heavy Handed for practicality. Now, the overseer wants to speak with us. Let's go see what he's got to say.

IT BEGINS

*Cutscene*

In a nutshell: those fools at Vault Tec only gave Vault 13 one water chip (the thing that's extremely fragile, but is essential to the survival of everyone in the vault). It's a wonder we lasted this long. Anyway, we have to go out into the brave new world and find another one. The Overseer says Vault 15's a good place to start looking. I bet there's rocks there too, so let's go!

Urg, that stupid repainting issue that happens when you try to run Fallout on a current machine is plaguing me. Basically, the screen turns black every 5 seconds and doesn't repaint the image that's mean to be displayed until I open another screen (such as the character sheet or help screen). I remember this happening the last time I played Fallout, but it happened every 5-10 minutes or so, so it was bearable. But this is completely unplayable. I'll try to work this out and continue playing, but right now it's late and I must rest. Sorry this wasn't much of a first episode, but I hadn't anticipated this and I'm certainly not going to delete the post at this point.

DF Gameplay Questions / Warhammers: silver or steel?
« on: November 18, 2012, 02:49:04 pm »
For my hammerdwarf squad, I've made 10 masterwork silver warhammers along with 10 full suits of (sadly copper) masterwork armor. Now that I've got more access to steel from the human and dwarven caravans, along with goblonite, I was wondering if I should replace the silver warhammers with steel ones.

How do I do it (if possible)?

DF Gameplay Questions / Twenty year-old child?
« on: November 16, 2012, 04:52:32 pm »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I didn't think this was possible. All dwarves become adults at age twelve right? I suspect vampirism (or bugs). If it's possible that he is a vampire, I've got a zombie locked in my mineshaft, so I can easily test whether or not it attacks him.

14
I recently made a fort with the express purpose of decking out an adventurer with some adamantine gear. I embarked with seven miners, dug straight down, and harvested as much adamantine as I deemed was safe from the two spires I found. After processing it and making a full suit of armor, all of the slashing/piercing weapons (and a crossbow, just for fun), and a huge pile of bolts, I dug out a large vault. Inside, I put all the adamantine goods and an artifact table I got, then sealed it with a drawbridge, with the lever easily reachable by an adventurer. When I finally came back, I found the vault completely empty. After several dozens of minutes of searching, I found only three adamantine bolts and one gauntlet. Is there reliable way to store things so that they can easily be retrieved by an adventurer without too much scattering?

DF Suggestions / Minuscule Strength Training From Pulling Levers
« on: October 25, 2012, 10:51:50 pm »
Much in the same way dwarves build up strength from turning pumps, I think another piece of equipment should be added to the dwarven gym: levers. Having a dwarf repeatedly pull a lever should give him an extremely small boost to strength, but large enough so that repeated flipping of a lever over a year or two will yield noticeable results. It would be by no means the most efficient way of training the strength attribute, but it would certainly be easy and hilarious. Just imagine, a huge stone room devoted to the mindless pulling of levers by dozens of cheese and potash makers.
