DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What is the most challenging yet doable embark?
« on: September 07, 2012, 03:41:06 pm »
As the question in the title asks. I'm up for some challenge, after i got messed my raws and my supposedly perfect fortress another time, sigh.

I'm thinking of no-items, no-skills, terrifying biome embark, obviously.

But should it have aquifier? Or perhaps it would be better if it had no water at all and hot/scorching climate?

And scarce trees (i think it's impossible to survive without at least some vegetation and shrubs and trees come hand in hand)

Anything else?

DF Modding / Adding unit graphics to existing fort
« on: August 30, 2012, 11:56:38 am »
I modded my game to include new civ, but did not mod graphics (phoebus) in any way. So now i have big "O" running around, which sort of stands out.

Is there a way to correct this in ongoing game?

(on a related note, why won't goblins wear gauntlets/boots etc, even though i added the ITEM tokens to their entity raw?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first miscarriage!

I'm so...

Okay, still, that was something i never saw before. She was dehydrated, btw. Does that happen often?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Trauma training
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:03:45 am »
Basically, all my forts end as one big happy family. Which is not good, as we know, for tantrum spiral prevention.

Now, i could give them lavish rooms, legendary meals and whatnot, but if i get serious casaualties, it won't help, since the happiness hit is so big. But, if they didn't really care about anything anymore, i guess it would be manageable.

So, what is the best way to trauma train your fort? One that does not include dwarves dying. I can think of two things.

1. Cage traps. After you get enough gobbos, mass pit them in some room, station your soon to be shocked dwarves as military squad in another, then open the door. Mass slaughter, trauma training. Tested, it works.

It's slow, though.

2. Pet slaughter. Some sort of elaborate mechanism for killing off pets. Pasture in a room that can be flooded or has spike traps... do dying pets harden the dwarves, or they need to witness it with their own eyes (assuming they didn't got them plucked out, obviusly)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Necromancers and embar site
« on: August 27, 2012, 10:33:16 am »
So, in my endless quest for perfect site i encountered something which, though not satisfying, is interesting that i am considering it.

Namely, it has Tower, two Towns and two Mountain Halls and neighbours. Does that mean the amount of brain-eating fun will be quintupled?

DF Modding / Sex ratio at birth
« on: August 21, 2012, 11:05:52 pm »
Is there a way to mod it? Basically, i'm thinking of making Dwarves sort of Tolkienesque with 2:1 m:f ratio.

(the aim is to limit the number child rearing couples. The monogamy for life already fits it and the Tolkien dwarves very well)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / An Ambush! Curse all firends of nature!
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:16:17 am »
What a surprise! Was it my clear-cutting of my embark area (tropical jungle. lots of trees)? Was it that wood furnace right next to Trade Depot constantly burning that wood to fuel my industry?

Good riddance anyway. I already managed to buy a breeding pair of Giant Tigers (yay!), so i don't need them :D

Now i have dozen or so elven corpses laying around. I need to change wood properties to something better, because they are pathetic. Steel, perhaps? Would material_template_default in savegame raws be the right place?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / artifact steel leggins
« on: August 10, 2012, 09:23:20 pm »
I'm wondering whether i should equip them on someone or should i stick to masterwork greaves? What's better?

Also, does artifact steel shield offer any benefits? Yes, i have been religiously training all my peasants in armorsmith an forbidding all bars but steel the moment i got mood notification. The results are good.
