Other Games / Fallout 76
« on: May 30, 2018, 11:02:36 am »
Bethesda has released a trailer for their upcoming fallout game, Fallout 76 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ye84Zrqndo

The song mentions west Virginia, so that's a pretty good hint about where it is set.

We should learn more about it on June 10th at E3.

Other Games / Nintendo Switch
« on: October 20, 2016, 09:42:49 am »
So the first video of Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo Switch, is out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5uik5fgIaI

I am pretty intrigued, I haven't bought a home console since the original Xbox but this one might get me back into console gaming if it turns out to be good.

It will be interesting to see if primarily portable titles (like pokemon) will end up on it too since there is a big emphasis on the portability of it.

(and yes, that was Skyrim on a Nintendo console. Portable Skyrim? Yes please!)

Other Games / Paladins: a team based hero shooter
« on: October 14, 2016, 01:56:17 pm »
Paladins is a free to play team based hero shooter and has been in open beta for a while now. I started playing it earlier this week and I have to say I have been enjoying my time with it very much.

Link to the game on steam

Link to the official website

The game currently has 18 playable characters. Initially when the game was being developed they were aiming for a game with fewer characters but higher customization for each character. However due to player feedback during the beta they have decided that they will be implementing more unique characters to the game and focus less on the customization.

Characters come in four varieties. We have our "Front Line" characters who are usually pretty tanky and have shields they can deploy to protect themselves or their team. Then we have the "Support" class which focuses on healing, debuffing and a bit of crowd control. We also have "Damage" characters who focus on... well you probably guessed it... dealing damage. Finally we have "Flank" characters that usually focus on burst damage and high mobility.

It is very similar to other games in the genre. If you've played High Rez's previous games or games from other developers like TF2, Overwatch or any sort of MOBA a lot of the characters will have familiar abilities.

Each character is customizeable through a set of collectible cards. You mix and match these cards to make a 5 card "deck". These cards often are centered around the character's abilities. Some examples would be "use X ability and gain 10% move speed for 2s" or "your shield has 500 extra health". Once you have your deck assembled you assign it points. You can buff each card up to 4 times, so say if you had a card that boosted your shield by 500, if you spend 4 points on it it might buff it by 1000 instead. You only have 12 points to distribute among the five cards.

I am not sure how I feel about the card system yet. It could be interesting but I have a feeling that it will often be a case that there are a few optimal builds so you'll always be going for the same sets anyway resulting in it just being another pointless grind. The nice part about it though is you pick your deck after you know what characters are on the other team so that might influence the way you customize your character. Now you might be wondering how you get these cards. Well you can either buy them outright with the in game gold currency or you can get them randomly from "radiant chests". Radiant chests can be purchased with the game's premium currency and are also earned as you level up your profile.

You can further customize your character during a match by buying items with points you earn while playing. They fall into four categories and you can only buy one from each category. The first category has items that will reduce CC and add damage mitigation. The second category has items that affect mobility and cooldowns. The third category has items that affect healing, such as lifesteal or getting a bonus to healing received. The final category has damage related items, you can choose to do more damage to shields, reload faster, reduce enemy healing etc...

There are currently two game modes in the game. Siege and Payload. In siege there is a central point that you have to stand on king of the hill style until you fill up the capture bar. The team that captured the point then has to push a payload to the enemy base to get points. You win when your team hits 4 points. You get 1 point for capturing the payload and another for delivering it to the enemy base. If you fail to deliver it to the enemy base the other team gets a point. However you can't win by only defending, you need to get your fourth point by capturing the middle or delivering a payload.

The second game mode is payload. In this mode one team starts of as attacking and the other defending. Your goal is to push the payload to the other side. Once the payload is delivered or the time runs out the team switches roles. The winner is the team who pushed the payload the furthest or if both teams successfully delivered the payload to the enemy base the team who did it in less time wins.

Now for the business model. Like many F2P games there are two kinds of currency. There is gold which you earn by playing matches and leveling up champions and then there are crystals which you pay money for. You can get a bit of the premium currency from login rewards (I earned 50 this week for logging in 7 days in a row for example). With gold you can buy champions, cards and some cosmetics (mostly recolours and voice sets). The premium currency can be used to buy cosmetics, mounts, to unlock champions or to buy radiant chests.

The cosmetics include champion skins, emotes and voice packs. Skins are divided up into pieces so you can mix and match if you wanted to. So if you liked a certain head and a certain costume you could mix them up. Or you can just buy a set as a whole. So far they come in three rarities, common, rare and epic. You can buy common skins with gold but rare and epic skins cost premium currency. Champion emotes are only available through Radiant Chests as far as I can tell. Which is pretty shitty since cosmetics seem to have a pretty low drop rate in chests. Voice packs can be purchased with premium currency or gold for the common voice packs. You don't actually start with a voice pack when you unlock a character, your voice emotes that you use in game is the standard Paladins announcer voice.

You can also buy radiant chests with premium currency (you get one every time you level up your profile). These chests give you either cards, gold or cosmetics. You're mostly going to be getting cards and gold from the chests. The cosmetic drops seem pretty rare. Radiant chests look like a big waste of money to me.

Many of the champions start off unlocked. You can unlock champions one of three ways. You can buy them with gold, premium currency or you can buy the founders pack. The founders pack is 20$, it unlocks all of the champions and will unlock every future champion as well. It also gives you an epic skin for the champion Fernando and an epic mount.

Anyway I've probably rambled on enough about the game. If you end up liking it feel free to add me in game, my player name is AngryOtter.

Other Games / The Elder Scrolls Legends digital CCG, now in open beta!
« on: August 05, 2016, 04:15:26 pm »
As of yesterday the Elder Scrolls Legends card game went into open beta. You can get it here: https://legends.bethesda.net/

It is a digital collectible card game set in the Elder Scrolls universe. I have been playing for about a week in the closed beta and so far I have been really enjoying my time with it. It is heavily inspired by games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone.

Much like Magic the game pits two players against each other, the players can use creatures and actions to try to reduce their opponents life total to zero. There are four card types that can be played. Support cards are cards that have a lasting effect on the game. From my experience so far there are two main types of support cards, ones that are activateable and ones that have a lasting effect. For example there is a support card that gives all of your creatures +1/+1. For an example of an activateable support card there's one that can be activated to do damage to enemy creatures. The activateable support cards can only be activated once per turn and have a limited amount of charges. Then there are creatures which can be played in one of two lanes (I'll get to lanes later), up to 4 creatures in each lane can be played. Creatures can have keywords that give them certain abilities much like M:TG or hearthstone. For example a creature with the "guard" keyword must be destroyed before opposing creatures can attack the player or non-guard creatures. Then there are actions, actions are much like spells in hearthstone, they can do things like fill a lane with 1/1 creatures, do damage, heal etc... And Finally we have the item card type. These cards are buff cards that can give your creatures bonuses.

Cards all have a magicka cost associated with them. Each turn your maximum magicka is increased by 1, up to a maximum of 12 (though there are cards that can give you bonus magicka that can let you pass this limit, I've had 15 before). Creature cards can be played in one of two lanes. The left lane is the field lane and there are no bonuses associated with it. The right lane is the shadow lane and creatures summoned into the shadow lane cannot be attacked by other creatures for their first turn (unless they have charge and attack on their first turn, then they are no longer concealed). Creatures can still be targeted by actions while they are concealed. Creatures can only attack creatures in their own lane, or they can attack the opposing player. Creatures that have an ability activated on summoning can target creatures in other lanes with this ability, for example there is a creature that does 1 damage to another creature when summoned. You could summon this creature in the left lane and target a creature in either lane to do 1 damage to.

The game uses a rune system. You start the game at 30 life and once your life is reduced to a certain threshold a rune is broken. You lose a rune at 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 life. Each time one of your runes is broken you draw a card. Some cards have the "prophecy" tag. These cards can be played immediately after one of your runes is broken if it is drawn. For example if my enemy attacked me and brought me to 25 health, and I drew a creature with the prophecy tag I could play it immediately.

There are several different ways to play the game. There is a story campaign which pits you against the AI. These matches usually have special rules that you will not find in other modes. It is quite similar to "adventures" in Hearthstone, though there is more effort put into the story side of things.

There is a practice mode in which you play against the AI. I don't know much about it as I haven't tried using it.

There is also versus mode which pits you against other players. You can either play a casual match or play on the ladder. The reward for playing on the ladder is that at the end of a season (they are 1 month long) you get a card rewarded to you based on your rank.

Much like Hearthstone there is an Arena mode. There are two different ways to play arena. You can face the AI and try to beat 9 AI opponents. Or you can play against other players. In the arena you build your deck much like you do in Hearthstone's arena mode. You're given 3 cards to chose from and you pick one card to add to your deck. You do this until you have 30 cards. When you're playing against the AI in arena you also get to pick another card to add to your deck every time you win a match. You lose once you reach 3 defeats and are rewarded based on how many wins you achieved. It costs 150 gold to enter the arena.

Now onto deck building. You can have 50 to 70 cards in your deck. Cards are divided into six different categories (similar to colours in M:TG). Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Endurance and Neutral. Neutral cards can go in any deck. Decks can only have two of the other categories. For example you could have a deck that consisted Intelligence, strength and neutral cards. There are also some rarer cards that belong to two categories. There are four different rarity levels, common, rare, epic and legendary. You can put up to 3 copies of a card in your deck with the exception of legendary cards which can only be a one of in a deck. Some of the cards you start the game with can be leveled up. These cards can be leveled by leveling up your player character (you gain experience by playing matches). Some cards level up into another card, or they give you the choice to level it up into one of two different cards.

Cards can be gained by buying them with in game currency (1 pack for 100 gold) or through buying packs with real money. Each pack contains six cards and one card is guaranteed to be of rare quality or better. You can also gain cards by playing in versus mode. Every third win in versus mode gets you a random card and a bit of gold. Another way you can get cards is based on what Avatar you chose when you started playing the game. For example I picked a Dark Elf avatar when I started playing and after a certain amount of levels gained I get a bonus Dark Elf cards.

As with Hearthstone cards can also be crafted. When you get a card you don't want you can disenchant it into soul gems. You can then use these soul gems to craft other cards. How many soul gems it takes to craft a card depends on its rarity. You can also get soul gems as a reward from playing in the arena.

The game also has a quest system. Each day you get to pick between one of two quests. These quests offer gold as a reward. An example of a quest would be "Play X number of creatures in the shadow lane" or "Destroy X number of creatures with abilities".

I like what I've seen so far. Even though it is heavily influenced by other games in the genre it seems to hit all the right buttons for me.  It isn't as flashy or as colourful as Hearthstone but I don't really think that is a bad thing. The audio and visuals are all very well done. The card art is beautiful and the music is pretty decent. Outside of Hearthstone this is the only digital CCG that has kept me coming back for more. I really like the Elder Scrolls theme and I look forward to seeing how this game progresses.

Life Advice / Google account taken over, need help!
« on: March 18, 2016, 12:44:18 pm »
So I must have logged into a site somewhere that phished my password or something because a few of my internet accounts have been taken over. Most of my important accounts like banking and different e-mail addresses have different passwords so they were safe from the intrusion. I checked over a few of my accounts such as hotmail and they showed that people from Russia and multiple places in China have been trying to log into my account. So my info is out there somewhere.

Anyway one of my accounts that was taken over was my google account. Some youtuber in France took over my account to spam their youtube channel links all over youtube. They changed my password and my name as well as my recovery phone number. They also created a gmail account attached to my google account.

I had another e-mail address listed as my recovery e-mail so I was able to regain control of my account by changing my password and recovery phone number. I also deleted the gmail account they had created

However my problem now is that my account is still somehow affiliated with their account and I am getting notifications about their continued youtube spam. Any ideas how I can get rid of the last vestiges of this intrusion into my account? I can't seem to find how I am still linked.

Other Games / Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:56:30 am »
From the Steam page:

Quote
You are a God! You are master and ruler of a loyal nation. You have unimaginable powers at your disposal. You have claimed this world as yours. But there are others who stand in your way. You must defeat and destroy these pretenders. Only then can you ascend to godhood and become the new Pantokrator.

In Dominions you take control of a powerful being that rules a nation and aspires to godhood. The type of Pretender Gods can vary from magically powerful arch mages to huge titans or large monuments. The pretender gods have different strengths dependent on what kind of god you choose and what nation you play.

When you start the game you decide what kind of god you are and how your Dominion affects your lands and followers. It is an expression of your divine might and the faith of your followers. If your dominion dies, so do you. Your dominion also inspires your sacred warriors and gives them powers derived from your dominion.

In order to win and become the one true god you have to defeat your enemies one of three different ways: conquer their lands, extinguish their dominion or claim the Thrones of Ascension.

In Dominions 4 you can also play team games where one of the players take the role of supreme god, and the other members of the team are his servants and loyal subjects. The lesser gods rule their nations, but you all share the dominion of the supreme god.

Dominions is set in a fantasy world that draws inspiration from historical nations, cultures and myths. You will not encounter the elves of conventional fantasy in this game. Instead you might lead a nation of vanir from old norse myth. Aztecs, romans, israelites, greeks, shona and kievian rus are just a few of the inspirational sources of the game.

The first Dominions game was released in 2002 and was well received by strategy gamers. Since then Dominions has been much refined and Dominions series is still actively played making it one of the longest running 4x turn based strategy games.

Dominions 4 is also a highly moddable game. You can create your own monsters, spells and entire nations. Since Dominions 3 there has been a vivid modding community and Dominions 4 will enhance this capability even further.

EDIT: The offer has now expired.

Europa Universalis III Chronicles (which includes all of the expansions) is currently available for free on Gamefly. On the website it mentions that the offer is unavailable in certain regions though.

To get the game you will need to create an account with them (which involves giving them billing info). You will also need to download their client to access the download for the game.

I've downloaded and installed it, it looks like you don't need the gamefly client to run the game once you get it.

Other Games / Games you can play while multi-tasking
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:14:42 am »
I'm looking for a game can be played in a somewhat hands off manner, that I can use while doing other things. Simulation games without a lot of micro management would probably the best fit to what I'm looking for.

I need your help finding the perfect procrastination tool! Any ideas?

DF Modding / Caste modding
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:55:52 am »
I haven't modded df in years, it's nice to see that there are a lot of new features to play with. I'm having a bit of trouble with castes though. When modding a caste I wanted to add tusks to the male of the species and an attack specific to that body part.

Putting [BODY:2TUSKS] under the male class seemed to work, but if I was fighting one of the creatures my attacks would pass through their tusks so I'm assuming I'm missing something. Also I can't seem to be able to add an attack that makes use of the body part. Can you add attacks to a specific cast?

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves and ammo.. I don't get it.
« on: October 01, 2011, 03:58:38 pm »
This new ammo management system vexes me.

Sometimes my dwarves have ammo, most of the time they don't.

I have 400 of any material bolts assigned to my marksdwarf squad, for both combat and training. What am I doing wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military and training
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:01:03 pm »
I was wondering if there is a reason why not all my dwarves train? I have a squad a five dwarves, but only three of them ever train. The other two just lollygag around the fortress and aren't active military like others (they have civilian icons).
